Ancient magic meets SEAL Team Six-with the fate of the United States hanging in the balance-in Tom Doyle's American Craftsmen.

US Army Captain Dale Morton is a magician soldier-a "craftsman." After a black-ops mission gone wrong, Dale is cursed by a Persian sorcerer and haunted by his good and evil ancestors. Major Michael Endicott, a Puritan craftsman, finds gruesome evidence that the evil Mortons have returned, and that Dale might be one of them.

Dale uncovers treason in the Pentagon's highest covert ranks. He hunts for his enemies before they can murder him and Scherie, a new friend who knows nothing of his magic.

Endicott pursues Dale, divided between his duty to capture a rogue soldier and his desire to protect Dale from his would-be assassins. They will discover that the demonic horrors that have corrupted American magic are not bound by family or even death itself.

American Craftsmen: A Novel (American Craft Series), by Tom Doyle

Review "Other authors have blended soldiering and sorcery, but few have brought Doyle's well-crafted prose style, carefully paced plotting, and depth of characterization to the trope. The gradual revelation of the intricate 'secret history' behind the spell-wielding soldiers and the long-simmering family feuds intertwined with that history add intrigue and depth to the slam-bang action of the opening chapters." - Library Journal

From the Back Cover "Tom Doyle blends an intricately re-envisioned history of America with literary references, some bold, some sly, in this genre-bending thriller. It's a feat of craftsmanship to be celebrated!" Jacqueline Carey, New York Times bestselling author of the Kushiel series."Tom Doyle's American Craftsmen is an exciting cross between dark urban fantasy and special ops thrillers. I thoroughly enjoyed it." Eric Flint, New York Times bestselling author of the Ring of Fire series."Tom Doyle has taken every Sci-Fi Channel and Coast to Coast radio show concept and incorporated them into a very entertaining novel. At first I was startled to encounter so many themes, then I was drawn to admire the skills he used to weave them together, and then I just sat back and enjoyed the show. I also learned the truth about how Stonewall Jackson was killed. Great fun." Jerry Pournelle, New York Times bestselling author."Tom Doyle's American Craftsmen is a fast-moving and intriguing novel that incorporates features of combat fantasy, special-operations, alternative history, block ops, and even a touch of romance into a seamless action tapestry offering a far richer read than most action adventures without sacrificing either action or speed." L.E. Modesitt, Jr. "Tom Doyle is an American Brother Grimm. It's almost as if Edgar Alan Poe and Philip K Dick teamed up to write a military action-thriller." Nicole Galland, author of I, Iago and The Fool's Tale. "A seamless blend of military SF and urban fantasy that had me riveted from the get-go. Like so many hidden corners of America, Tom Doyle's imagination is a strange and marvelous place!" Jeri Smith-Ready, award-winning author of Wicked Game and Shade. "From his secret history of the Pentagon to his elaborate depiction of ghostly power in the world around us, Doyle orchestrates a gritty, believable novel. Plus, his craftsmen employ some kick-ass magic tricks!" Mindy Klasky, author of The Girl's Guide to Witchcraft and How Not to Make a Wish."The story is poised at the junction of at least two genres--military thrillers and urban fantasy. American Craftsmen is politically sophisticated while still being a hot-blooded, quintessentially American story." Stephanie Dray, author of Lily of the Nile and Song of the Nile. "Like some mutant blend of Fringe and Tom Clancy, Doyle's American Craftsmen rides the urban fantasy wave in a whole new direction." David J. Williams, author of The Mirrored Heavens and The Burning Skies.

About the Author The Internet Review of Science Fiction has hailed TOM DOYLE's writing as "beautiful & brilliant." Silverstone In his debut novel, Tom Doyle takes us on a roller coaster ride full of twists on turns that will leave you guessing what is coming next. Doyle's unique blend of fantasy, alt-history and military action adventure pulls you in and doesn't let go.The underlying premise of this novel is that the old families of American magical folk are uber-patriots who work for different branches of the American armed forces or intelligence services, a cooperation that dates back to Revolutionary War times. Rather than calling their skills magic, witchcraft or paranormal abilities, the families prefer the term "craft" for what they do. Hence, the book's title, American Craftsmen. In the alt-history mythology of this world, the families have been responsible for the success of key battles from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War and up to World War II. In more recent wars, they have continued to serve as operatives, often on missions to battle foreign craftsmen. The narrator, Dale Morton, is the latest generation of Morton family to serve in the Army. After nearly being killed in a mission in the Persian Gulf where a Persian sorcerer sent Morton's mundane team on a civilian killing spree, Morton discovers a conspiracy in the Pentagon that only grows as he peels back more layers of the onion. Meanwhile, another craftsman, Major Michael Endicott is convinced that Morton is part of the conspiracy and attempts to take him down. While Morton struggles to stay alive and prevent the evil side of his family clan from escaping into the world, by chance (or fate) he meets a Persian woman Scherie Rezvani, who, fortunately, turns out to be much more than she initially appears to be. Alliances switch back and forth and the tension increases. As the story reaches the thrilling climax in a secret, subterranean ring under the pentagon, Morton battles ancient evil to save the old families and the country.Doyle is able to deftly bring in the weighty themes of right vs. wrong, paranormal vs. science, and love, faith and family, all the while making sure that we have a fun time.

There are some differences, but the theme is similar. Special Operations soldiers who are also magicians. Here they use the term 'Craftsmen,' men who know/use 'the Craft.' The author provides an interesting backstory - a mythology that dates back to a craftsman who aided General Washington during the Revolutionary War and forged a lasting alliance between Magic-users and the American Military. The story in this novel is about a Dale Morgan, Craftsman who leaves the service after being injured in a magical conflict in Iran. He begins to see a conspiracy that could undermine the relationship between all of the magic-using peoples "Craft Families" and the US government. He sets out to discover and stop the plot. The plotters, deep within the Pentagon's magic offices will stop at nothing to have him destroyed and protect their plot.Unfortunately, there is a wrench in their plan. Endicott, an ancestral enemy of the Morgan clan is a devout and honorable warrior. At first, he is out to stop Morgan, thinking him a rogue sorcerer. As he chases the man down, he discovers that everything is not as it seems.I will not provide any spoilers here. This is too good a story for that. This novel works on multiple levels. It is a sorcery/magic book, but not in the "Harry Potter" vein. The author has created a believable mythology that mixes the military and the magical very effectively. It is also a military action story, and like so many of the better ones, there is a conspiracy story in here as well. The author handles all of these aspects well and still manages to move the story along at a decent pace. This is a difficult task, considering the amount of exposition needed in creating a cogent alternate universe with this level of consistency and believability. It is similar in many ways to Warren Ellis' Gravel series. Again, if you liked Gravel, you will really like this.

The writing-flow has quick ongoing action ~ military and magical ~ character point-of-view dialog, speculation and imagination mixed-in with well-described worldly settings and vivid military field-ops, equally well-described. Even via the very choice of *craft* for *magic*, *power*, *prayer* or *spirit* ~ Tom Doyle is showing a fine-balance ~ as *craft* is one of the older American names for *the force* [my neutral term] ~ used by puritan pioneers, settlers, masons, witches and [now] [some] modern wiccans. And one of the fine balances of this finely crafted work is that certain USA lineages have and hand down *the force*. These lineages have variable metaphysical biases [Abrahamic or Heathen variants with some virtually agnostic individuals]. But, via usage of *the force*, they look more alike operationally ~ yet dividing-up via military service more by personal specialty ~ like other American military units. Even this American lineage-pattern is balanced via a distinct Native American addition to some lineages and possible new members from overseas once-in-a-while. Some [may] find the admixture of history to destiny / magical to military / psi-tech to hi-tech to be *too much* ~ but, for me, it's an easily readable novel ~ took me only two days via loose, casual but enthusiastic reading +++
