By Alexandra well, I bought a book for boxing and ran pass through this, it has given immense information about kickboxing and as well as the origin of the sport which is muay thai. I just find the book less pleasing to read because of the way how the author provided the information through his writing, or maybe I'm just not into how he writes, this is just my opinion based on the other books i've purchased before hand

By Amazon Customer First and foremost, intermittent fasting has changed my life for the better. I first learned about fasting through the website Leangains.com about 2 years ago, which led me to Brad Pilon's "Eat, Stop, Eat" program around the same period. Since then, I've lost at least 60lbs and have kept it off. I'm more active then ever thanks to intermittent fasting, calisthenics and Brazilian jiujitsu. If you're looking for a sustainable nutrition program that is painlessly easy and healthy, then intermittent fasting is exactly what you want.Having said all that, "The 8 Hour Diet" was [allegedly] stolen from leangains.com, Martin Berkhan's website. He has been writing about the 16/8 fasting diet for years, which in turn has turned the bodybuilding world upside down. He has changed countless amounts of blog and forum members lives with his methods. It's a shame "The 8 Hour Diet" makes no mention of him or his website. So, if you're interested in this book, check out Leangains.com for original (and FREE!) version of the diet.My actual review of this book below. The book is about abstaining from any calories for 16 hours then feeding for 8 hours every day. One thing I did not like was how the author routinely uses research from alternate day fasting (which requires fasting for 24-36 hours, every other day) in order to support the 16/8 diet. It's possible that 16 hours is not enough time for the body to receive the same benefits as going 24-36 hours every other day would.Typical of Rodale Publishing, in my opinion, there are numerous grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the book. However, this does not take away from the reading experience; still a decent read (despite being [allegedly] stolen from Martin Berkhan). In closing, if you're interested in learning more about intermittent fasting before buying this book, head over to the following websites for everything you would ever need to know. If after that time you still want this book, then go ahead and order it.[...][...] (Eat, Stop, Eat)[...] (free ebook)

If you commit you will lose weight and you will feel better. If you decide to go with this diet approach please know the first couple days are kind of tough but once you get over that hurdle this approach is actually very liberating (no more worrying about points, carbs, fats, calories, magical food combinations...etc etc etc). I took the time to give this a good review because the negative reviews all seem to be sketchy advertisements for similar diet approaches (notice they all suspiciously point to the same website). Don't let the negative "reviews" frighten you. This is a solid program that will work. Of course this concept is nothing new but when you think about it pretty much every "new" diet is a reincarnation of a diet that is already in existence. This book presents the concept of intermittent fasting in clear and concise way and does a great job backing up the concepts in this book with research.

I exercise and eat sensibly but nothing in the extreme. Weight loss has been steady. It is easy to adjust to fit my schedule. I believe at this point it is a way of life that I intend to follow.

This piece is a wonderful introduction into the dark, thrilling, and chaotic mind of the genius that is Alex Story. The poetry and stories within this collection are beautiful, intense, and haunted. There is a supernatural and macabre allure to his work which will leave you addicted to his every word. Check out his band Cancerslug after this read. You will learn what the Slug Cult is. Then check out the Slug Cult Bible. Then you will understand why Alex Story is the hardest working man in rock n roll and why Cancerslug reigns as the King of the Underground. By SavaFiend76 This book is the story of Tristian, who told a terrible lie in her youth that affected the lives of two young men; and her daughter Kristian, who questions who her father is and wonders what secrets her mother has been hiding all these years. This is such a good read! You can feel the characters' emotions coming through the page. The ending was so unexpected...a tearjerker, but also a tale of redemption. There are strong Christian undertones to this, but the author doesn't beat you over the head with it. I personally like stories that show faith in a down-to-earth, relatable way rather than a preachy way. All in all, a very good read!

The characters in were amazing and I love the sensitivity of the situation Zaneta displayed in the book. I was really really shocked with the outcome but I love that the book screams LIFE. People lie and can spiral into a lot of negatives but it's what you do next that matters realizing that the situation effects you first hand but the outcome and your actions effect many. I love this book.

Seven years later, Alice Manning and Ronnie Fuller, now eighteen, are released from "kid prison" to begin their lives over again. And now another child has disappeared, under freakishly similar circumstances.

Every Secret Thing MTI, by Laura Lippman

From Publishers Weekly With this engrossing mystery/suspense stand-alone novel, Lippman, winner of the Edgar, Shamus and Agatha awards for her series featuring likable heroine Tess Monaghan (Baltimore Blues; Charm City; The Last Place) solidifies her position in the upper tier of today's suspense novelists. Two 11-year-old children-good girl Alice Manning and bad girl Ronnie Fuller-wander homeward in Baltimore after being kicked out of a friend's pool party. They discover a baby in an unattended carriage by the front door of a house and steal it away. The reader watches in horror, knowing what will come next. The baby dies, and Alice and Ronnie are imprisoned for seven years. The mystery involves which girl did the killing, and which was the dupe. After release from prison, their blighted lives move inexorably toward further horror and tragedy. Lippman slowly relinquishes the facts of her story, building suspense as she reveals the past. Her well-honed prose is particularly suited to descriptions that impart more than just appearances: "Holly was one of those people who seemed to be put together with higher quality parts than everyone else"; "...there was something menacing in the very fineness of his bones, as if a bigger boy had been boiled down until all that remained was this concentrated bit of rage and bile." With this book, much darker than any in her past series, Lippman shows she is an author willing to take risks in both writing and storytelling. Her deft handling of this disturbing material is sure to increase the breadth of her readership.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Lippman has won just about every mystery writing award there is--the Edgar, the Agatha, the Anthony, the Shamus, and the Nero Wolfe--for her Tess Monaghan series. This is her first stand-alone mystery, one in which the detectives are consigned to bit parts. The fact that the police here do little save go through the motions underscores the fatalistic feeling at the core of this dark domestic tragedy. Lippman writes the kind of opening that should make readers feel they're following helplessly as a nightmare slowly unfolds. Two 10-year-old girls, bounced from a birthday party for bad behavior, discover a baby in a carriage on the sidewalk and deem it necessary to "save" her. Lippman leaves the reader knowing something terrible happened but unsure what it was until the narrative progresses to seven years later, when the two girls are released from prison and return to their homes, six blocks away from the house to which they brought untold grief. The girls have to adjust to a new prison of neighborhood suspicion. Then, as the girls make somewhat of a new life, children start disappearing, and then reappearing, until one toddler is well and truly missing. Lippman doesn't write a standard whodunit here but plays with reader expectations of what should happen next. A startling page-turner. Connie FletcherCopyright © American Library Association. Review “Laura Lippman can speak in any voice....This may be the best book I’ve read all year.” (Charlotte News & Observer)“...a chilling study of mothers, daughters, love, and murder....Lucid, tight, and compelling.” (Kirkus Reviews on Every Secret Thing)“This is a standout. And the story of children in jeopardy and innocence lost is sadly all too timely.” (Orlando Sentinel)

78 of 83 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Stand-Alone Mystery By Craig Larson I just finished Laura Lippman's latest (how's that for alliteration?) and what a stunner! _Every Secret Thing_ is a stand-alone novel, not part of the Tess Monaghan series, and it's more of a "portrait of a community" sort of a book than an outright mystery, although it certainly has a strong mystery driving the plot. I'd hesitate to say "breakout book" because I think she broke out long ago, but as I read, I couldn't help but compare the experience to that of reading Dennis Lehane's _Mystic River_, which I still firmly believe is one of the best American books of the last ten years. And I do think that _Every Secret Thing_ is on par with that book. The story is narrated from multiple viewpoints, including those of a pair of now teenage girls, just released from juvenile detention after serving seven-year sentences for their parts in the kidnapping and death of a baby, the granddaughter of a locally-famous black judge. Ronnie Fuller and Alice Manning have had their lives irrevocably changed, and when another child of mixed race disappears soon after their return home, the girls become prime suspects, after their names are leaked to the press and to the police. At first, we feel sympathetic toward poor Alice, the "good" girl whose life was ruined by the inexplicable actions of the "bad" Ronnie, but as the story goes on, our sympathies are drawn more and more to Ronnie as the secrets of what happened seven years before, and what is happening now, are revealed.Set in Baltimore, the story is as much about developing character studies of the girls, their families, the police, the press, and so forth, as it is about solving the mystery. The book also presents a portrait of the racism and divisions inherent in society, not just black vs. white, but rich vs. poor, and so on. There are great passages about the struggles faced by homicide detective Nancy Porter, who found the dead baby many years ago and who is now assigned to the new investigation, that are worthy of _Homicide: Life on the Street_ or _The Wire_. Lippman draws deft portraits of both Sharon Kerpelman, the public defender who feels she failed Alice in the earlier case, and Mira Jenkins, the reporter who sees this story as her chance to "move downtown." And Cynthia Barnes, the mother of the murdered baby, is a fully-shaded character who sees the possibility to get some sort of revenge on the girls, who she feels should have been tried as adults. This is a gripping story, full of tension and emotion. It has moments of sadness and moments of humor. It's a great book by a great writer and I'd be surprised if it isn't nominated for the major awards in the field this year. Very highly recommended.

Bukowsky When I picked up "Every Secret Thing," by Laura Lippman, I expected nothing more than a formulaic novel about child abductions. Much to my surprise, this book turned out to be a deeply psychological page-turner with marvelously descriptive writing, dry humor, and intricate plotting. Now that I have finished the book, the highest compliment that I can pay to Ms. Lippman is that she reminds me of the great British novelist, Ruth Rendell. Why? Rendell has never been satisfied with the standard whodunit formula. She likes to examine the unexplored dark corners of the human psyche and the mystery is not always the centerpiece of her books. The people are."Every Secret Thing" begins with a tragedy. A little girl named Olivia Barnes is kidnapped and, several days later, she is murdered. Two eleven-year-old girls named Ronnie Fuller and Alice Manning are charged with the crime, and they spend seven years in juvenile detention facilities. When they are released, Ronnie and Alice are young women of eighteen. Before long, when another little girl named Brittany goes missing, Ronnie and Alice are once again under suspicion. There are so many things to praise about this book that it is difficult to pick one, but above all else, the character development is uniformly outstanding. We get to know each major and several minor characters intimately, as if they were our own neighbors. Lippman gives us a glimpse into the minds of Ronnie and Alice, two unhappy and lonely misfits with a tenuous grip on reality. We become well acquainted with Helen Manning, Alice's narcissistic and foolish mother, Nancy Porter, the cop who found Olivia's body and has been haunted by the case ever since, and Cynthia Barnes, Olivia's bitter and grieving mother whose life is devoted to seeing Alice and Ronnie destroyed. That the two girls responsible for killing Olivia should be set free to walk the earth is simply not an option for Cynthia, who has powerful political connections and is used to getting what she wants. As the story unfolds, a tale of psychological horror emerges that is truly chilling. When I turned the last page, I knew that I would be thinking about this book for some time to come, marveling at how Lippman mines so many themes so effectively, and how she makes us care deeply about the outcome of her story. Don't miss this unforgettable thriller.

Was Not Left With a Good Feeling By Laura Christine Ms. Lippman is a talented writer that is capable of taking you along for a ride.I appreciate a good plot twist as much as anyone, but when this novel ended I felt like I had been duped. (I am not the type that necessarily tries to solve the mystery as I am reading, so yes, it is possible to suck me in.)It seems that Ms. Lippman used her talent to play on the reader's sympathies. I walked away from this book feeling like I had rooted for the wrong team. While I won't deny the author's skills as a novelist, this was not a feel-good experience. On a constructive note, I would suggest Lippman's "What the Dead Know". While WTDK is not entirely uplifting, it is a twisting novel that succeeds in creating some sense of resolution and reconciliation in the end.

This diet helps to lose weight and improve the health. Reducing the amount of gluten in the diet or even a complete rejection of it will help to prevent cancer, reduce high blood pressure, and normalize cholesterol. Although I think that healthy people completely abandoning the the gluten products is not necessary. Perhaps we should slightly reduce the amount of food, or occasionally give up for a few months to clean the body. I think it would be a good way to prolong life and improve its quality.

Review How to get rid of stretch marks The root cause of stretch marks can be anything from weight loss to hormonal change to pregnancy. All these causes have been researched by the experts comprehensively so one can use the most appropriate treatment in accordance with the reason. For your benefit, we have compiled a list of quick home remedies, natural treatments, dietary changes and some famous brands you can choose from to treat your bothersome stretch marks. The Secret IngredientThe more familiar we are with our hair's texture the more open we are to experimenting with all natural products. Chemicals have a negative impact on the quality and health of your locks in the long run. This is exactly why organic hair care products are gaining a lot of prominence. People are unwilling to trade their natural hair for a chemically induced solution that brings in momentary bounce. A good choice, we think! Here are some common natural ingredients you can look for in your next hair care product which bring a healthy radiance right where it belongs.

From the Author How Often Should I Wash My Hair   A very good question indeed! So what is the bottom line? Dermatologists agree that for the sake of your own hair, you may skip shampooing for longer periods of time. Here are some recommendations from experts you can use as a starting point when it comes to a hair care routine.    Embrace the Nature While natural ingredients in hair care products are a good start, you can completely switch your unnatural products with homemade organic ones and fully control the life of your hair. It may seem gross to never use a shampoo again, but it is this very belief system that we are after. Not using chemically infused cleansing products does not mean that you will live with grime for the rest of your life. It simply means you are now going to consciously choose natural alternatives over commercial ones. Want to know how?

From the Inside Flap How to get rid of acne   After the Holy Grail, perhaps one of the most extensively researched topics in the world is acne. There are extremely few people who manage to live their whole lives without an acne outbreak. As most of us know, acne afflicts different people in different ways, since their appearance differs; it needs to be treated on an individual basis, it can occur in varying degrees of intensity and its cause is due to a very large number of reasons. If you are on a mission to be as acne-free as possible, the first and most important step in your mission would be to identify the cause for acne in your case. Once you know why you get acne, it becomes easier for you to avoid the triggers and thus control it with relative ease. Here, however, we have discussed some of the most common treatment tips for acne you can try.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Noah Stallion adjusted his necktie, taking one last glance at his reflection in the mirror that decorated the men's restroom. The expensive designer suit he wore fit him well and as he stared at his reflection he couldn't help but think that despite his initial reservations his investment in the silk garment had been well worth the money. He took a deep breath. This would be his third interview with the company who'd actually sought him out. He'd been surprised when the head of their Human Resources department had first called to inquire about his availability. She'd been fully aware of his credentials even though she'd never laid eyes on his résumé.Since he had not been in the market for a new job he hadn't thought twice about hanging up on the woman. But she'd persisted, calling back to convince him to at least meet with their management team to discuss the opportunity. After some serious consideration he'd acquiesced but not before his two sisters had pointed out that blessings didn't just drop in your lap without a good reason. That first meeting had led to this one, an interview with the company's chief operating officer, and Noah still wasn't sure if he was even all that interested in the position. As he exited the men's room and moved back to the front foyer toward the reception desk he just missed colliding with an attractive woman, whose own attention was focused on her iPad. His reflexes were sharp as he grabbed her by the shoulders, preventing what could have been a painful accident. As he steadied himself, and her, she apologized at the same time as he did."Oh, excuse me!""I'm so sorry!"Noah smiled brightly. The beautiful woman met the look he was giving her with one of her own. Her brown eyes were wide and darted back and forth across his face as she stared. Her own face was flushed, color warming her dimpled cheeks."Are you okay?" he questioned, concern tinting his tone. Her voice was rich, the alto timbre ringing warmly between them. "I'm fine. I should have been paying attention to where I was going. Thank you for catching me," she said.Noah nodded. "I'm glad I could keep both of us from falling," he said, his smile widening as he held the intense gaze she was giving him.She smiled back before breaking eye contact. "You have a good day," she said as she eased past him and moved down the hallway. For a brief moment Noah forgot where he was and why he was there, wanting to continue to stare after her. The woman was stunning. As she sauntered down the hall he couldn't help but admire the side to side strut of her full hips. The red pantsuit she wore flattered her voluptuous figure. Catching himself, he took a deep breath then quickly turned around, almost missing the look the woman tossed him over her shoulder.Noah moved to the reception desk. A young girl with deep blue eyes and a porcelain-white complexion greeted him by name. She then gestured for him to take a seat on a blue-and-gray-striped upholstered sofa. He took a step, then hesitated, turning back around."Do you know who that woman was in the red suit? She headed in that direction." He pointed behind him.The girl shook her head. "I'm sorry, Mr. Stallion. I didn't see anyone, so I'm not sure who you mean.""Oh, well," Noah said with a slight shrug of his shoulders. He moved to take a seat. As he settled himself comfortably, he took a deep breath, holding it for a brief moment before blowing it past his full lips. Minutes passed as he waited, watching people come and go. A mountain of memories were suddenly spinning through his head, intruding on his thoughts about his interview.A lot had happened in the past year since his mother's passing. Norris Jean Stallion had died in her sleep, quietly slipping away on her own terms. Much like she'd lived her life, there'd been little fanfare, her children not even knowing she'd been ill. With Norris Jean's death, her youngest child, his sister Natalie, had found her way home for the first time in twelve years, reestablishing contact with her family. And then there'd been the discovery that they had cousins they'd never known about, a branch of Stallions on a family tree thought to have only been a mere limb. Family support suddenly extended beyond their Utah ties and the abundance of it had been phenomenal. Since then he'd married off his sister Natalie and imagined Naomi wouldn't be too far behind. Now he was being offered an amazing opportunity and a beautiful woman had just crossed his path. Noah couldn't help but smile, thinking just how good his life was.Noah extended his hand in greeting. "Frederick Ross, it's good to see you again," he said, a look of surprise washing over his expression.Frederick Ross smiled broadly. "Noah Stallion. It's been a while. We've come a long way since our days at Bountiful High School."Both men paused in a quick moment of reflection as Frederick gestured for Noah to take a seat. The former high school athletes were meeting in the boardroom of Fly High Dot Com, a multi-million-dollar aircraft leasing company. The highend decor was a mix of polished woods and expensive leathers. Framed photographs of the company's fleet of expensive planes decorated the walls.Noah slowly eyed the images one by one. He echoed the sentiment. "I don't think either of us ever imagined going from that muddy football field at Bountiful to the likes of this."Frederick nodded. "I know I didn't but I'm glad we're here. So, what do you know about our company?""I know that Fly High has a worldwide fleet of over one thousand private jets. By far the largest of any other company. You've proven yourself to be an industry leader in safety and security. You employ a team of some seven thousand employees. You're currently the number two private leasing company worldwide and well on your way to taking the top spot because of your exceptional customer service and your fly share programs."Forbes named Fly High one of the top ten fastest growing companies and its owner the most elusive self-made millionaire next to that guy with the biotech firm in Georgia. In fact, the press has deemed Cat Moore the hardest interview to nab in history. So what's he like to work for?"A wry smile crossed Frederick's face. The chief operating officer tilted his head as he met Noah's questioning stare. "Not at all what you expect. And I'm impressed that you did your homework," he said.Noah nodded. He leaned forward in his seat. "I always come prepared and I know you've established an imposing security team. So I'm not sure how I can improve upon that.""I need someone with your skillset to manage that team as well as help us expand as the company continues to grow. Your résumé is impressive. You have a stellar military background and your tenure with the Salt Lake City police department shows that you are more than capable of taking the lead. All you have to do is say yes and the job is yours."The man continued to extol Noah's virtues and the benefits of working for a private firm as opposed to his current government job. Then he made note of the starting salary and Noah's eyes widened."We have some negotiating room if you demand more," Frederick said. "Management is looking to take the company public so we can negotiate stock options and a host of other benefits, including a company car and free air travel. You'll be based here but we'll require some of your time in our New York and Atlanta offices, so you'll have to travel. I really believe you would be a great asset to our organization or I wouldn't have recommended you."Noah's eyebrows lifted slightly. "You recommended me? I'm surprised.""Don't be. I actually ran into one of your brothers and he told me what you did. After a little research I knew you'd be the perfect fit.""I'll need some time to think about it," Noah said, his mind beginning to race.Frederick nodded. "You'll receive a formal offer from us in the next forty-eight hours. Then I can give you another seven days to mull it over. But after that I'll need an answer.""I appreciate that," Noah responded."So, are you going to the class reunion?" Frederick questioned, changing the subject. He leaned back in his leather executive's chair, folding his hands together in his lap.Noah shrugged, his full lips pulling into a warm smile. "I've been thinking about it. It'll be good to see everybody again.""I was thinking the same thing although I'm not sure that I'll be in town that weekend. But if I can work it into my schedule, I think I might stop by. It'll be good to pound fists with the guys again."For a few brief moments the two men walked memory lane, recalling their days together on the football and track teams. Both were laughing heartily when Noah glanced down to his wristwatch."I hate to do this but I need to get back to the station. It was good to see you, Frederick. I appreciate you offering me this opportunity," Noah said again. "I'll be in touch."Both men came to their feet and shook hands. "I really hope you'll come on board," Frederick reiterated. "I promise that working here will be quite the experience.""You'll hear from me soon," Noah promised.Walking to the elevator, the old acquaintances were still knee deep in conversation when the door opened on the conveyor. Noah stopped short when he caught sight of the beautiful woman from earlier. Once again she was lost in the digital screen of her electronic device.Catherine Moore stepped out of the elevator. She came to an abrupt stop as the two men moved in front of her. She took a quick glance one way and then the other before settling her eyes on Noah Stallion's face. A bright smile widened across her own."Why do you look familiar?" she questioned, eyeing Noah curiously."We did just run into each other. Literally," he said, amusement crossing over his expression. She shook her head, tossing Frederick a brief look. "No, we've met before. I'm sure of it."Frederick laughed. "Noah Stallion, allow me to introduce you to Cat Moore, CEO and owner of Fly High Dot Com. Catherine Moore, this is Noah Stallion. You probably remember him from Bountiful High School. We all graduated together."Noah's eyes widened, surprise registering on his face. "Catherine Moore? Head cheerleader, Catherine Moore?""Now that was a long time ago!" Catherine laughed. She repeated his name once and then a second time, hesitating briefly as she tried to put more familiarity to the face. She finally nodded. "Noah Stallion. Our senior year you played football for the Bountiful Braves, second string quarterback, right? Everyone used to wonder how you made the team.""I was quick and fast on my feet, that's how I made the team," Noah said as he shook his head.Catherine nodded, the memories coming back to her. "Actually, you were really good. People wondered why you didn't play before senior year. So, why didn't you play before then?" she asked. He smiled. "Family obligations."She nodded, studying the look that glistened in his dark eyes. "You were kind of nerdy with glasses back then. And really thin!"Noah laughed. "I was not that thin."Her eyes skated the length of his body, and she thought that he'd definitely filled out quite nicely. She bit down against her bottom lip, her eyes glistening as she lifted her gaze back to his. "Didn't we have a class together?" she asked."We actually had two classes together. Biology and Spanish. You sat two rows behind me in Miss Garcia's Spanish class."Catherine's smile widened. "Miss Garcia! I did not like that woman!" she exclaimed.Noah chuckled with understanding. "I don't think many of us did. But that was a long time ago."Catherine extended her hand to shake his. His grip was strong, his palm and fingers warm and soft. His touch was electric, sending a shiver of heat down her spine. She took a deep breath before speaking again."Well, it was nice to see you again, Noah Stallion.""The pleasure was all mine, Catherine," he answered, his smile warm and endearing.Frederick patted him on the back. "We'll talk soon, Noah," he said.Catherine and Frederick both stood watching as the elevator doors closed on Noah's exit. She then turned her gaze toward Frederick. "Catching up with your old pals now?""Something like that. He was interviewing for the security position."She nodded, finding that tidbit of information interesting."Are you going to the high school reunion? Noah was just saying that he might go and I was thinking about it."Catherine shrugged her narrow shoulders. "I really hadn't thought about it. Too much on my mind with the IPO process. Speaking of, how are we doing with all the reports the underwriters need?""Still on schedule."She nodded, then without another word, headed in the opposite direction.Behind the closed doors of her office, Catherine moved to the window, hoping for one last glimpse of Noah Stallion as he maneuvered through the parking lot to his car. She caught sight of him just as he reached his vehicle. She stood staring as he removed his suit jacket and laid it on his backseat.Gone were the wire-framed glasses, and there was nothing nerdy, thin or awkward about the man. The former high school jock had blossomed nicely, she thought, her gaze following as he slid into the driver's seat and started the engine. Seconds later he pulled into traffic and disappeared from sight.Catherine moved to the bookcase behind her desk, searching the tomes that lined the shelves. Her friends had sent her a package recently, trying to entice her to attend their high school reunion. When she finally found what she was looking for, a copy of their high school yearbook, she pulled it into her hands and placed it on top of the desk. She flipped through the pages quickly until she found Noah's yearbook picture. There had been no change to his smile and the shimmer in his dark eyes, both just as they'd been when he'd been a teen. Catherine felt herself grinning foolishly as she flipped from one photo to another: Noah and the football team, Noah running track, Noah on stage in a theater production, Noah's senior portrait. She reached for her cell phone, hitting the speed dial for her best friend Camille Trent. "Hey, do you remember Noah Stallion?" she asked immediately when the line was answered.Camille laughed. "Yeah, he's a police detective now. One of his brothers plays professional football and the other is a doctor. And he has two sisters. Why?""I was just asking.""You don't call me in the middle of the afternoon to just ask a question like that for no good reason. Something must've made you inquire. Spill it!""Apparently he's interviewing for a job here in the Utah office."

I enjoyed Noah & Catherine's story. Noah is the oldest Stallion cousin from Salt Lake that helped raise his siblings because of their absent father. I loved that Noah was an emotional guy that wasn't afraid to let Cat know how he felt about her. It was a enjoyable quick read that lets us catch up with those Stallions we have grown to love while getting to know the newest Stallions.

By Ronfern06 I am a fan of the Stallion family and admit that while I loved the series, I wasn't sure I wanted any more Stallions to mess up my image of the ideal family. But Noah Stallion has made a believer out of me. How can you go wrong with more Stallions like Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and now Noah? You can't. I absolutely loved this story. A strong and confident man and a strong and successful woman with chemistry off the charts from day one. This story pulled me in and didn't turn me loose until the end. I am anxiously waiting for the next Stallion to take my breath away!

Holt Yet another evocative and thoughtful book from Kevin Griffin. His book for me points to the flaws in the recovery model that tend to "trudge the road to happy destiny' as AA says. There's little joy in that quote and the joy of recovery can be expressed in many wonderful ways.

I highly recommend his earlier books for anyone still figuring out how to find their path and get stable in recovery. This is a very practical book for moving beyond those first few years to building a rewarding life congruent with the values that support recovery. This would be a great book for a small study group.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Kansas City, Missouri, April 1882Despite appearances, Rebecca Lane was not a wallflower.Glancing to her left, then her right, she watched her passed-over companions sitting primly against the wall of the Kansas City Ladies Cultural Club while the fiddler played his jumpy tune off-key.While the other ladies might be considered blushing flowers, waiting hopefully for some man to pluck them from disgrace, she was not. What she was, was a spinster. If a man did come and pluck her, it would only end in humiliation. There was no disguising the fact that among the dainty wallflowers wilting in their chairs she stood out as bold as a ragweed. If this were not a charity event, and if Aunt Eunice had not spent the best part of an hour casting frowns at her, she would stand tall, very tall, six feet worth of tall to be exact, and escape this hall of merry, dancing people.A sigh coming from her right reminded her that not everyone was merry. If she had an ounce of spit, she'd unite her sisters in humiliation and together they would march out the door.Perhaps not Mary Crowner, though. Willard Phipp had just lifted her from her seat of misery and whirled her onto the dance floor.Because Rebecca had idle moments with nothing to do but tap her toe and clench her fingers together, she considered her future. There were a few fates worse than being a spinster, and truth be told, some advantages. She closed her eyes to the colorful skirts twirling past her feet. As she often did, she recited the advantages in her mind. One, no man would tell her what to say. Two, no man would tell her what to wear. Three, no man would dictate where she could go or when she could go there. But—and she never made it through the advantages before this thought sneaked in—no man would ever tell her that he loved her."Rebecca Louise Lane," her aunt's voice hissed in her ear. "Why must you sit so tall? Your head is bobbing above the rest."Was her head bobbing? No, certainly her aunt had made that up."How do you expect to ever get a husband?"She didn't, of course, but to say so out loud would put the woman who had raised her in a foul mood, so she shrugged instead."Now, slouch down…and for heaven's sake, smile. I just saw Randall Pile looking your way.""Yes, Aunt Eunice." She slid her posterior forward on the chair so that her shoulders sunk to the level of the girl sitting beside her.Sadly, this position jutted her knees out and made her look… Well, she wouldn't think about that. She only hoped that no one tripped over them. She peered through the throng of bobbing, whirling dancers, searching for Randall. Please, oh, please let her aunt have been mistaken about the fellow's interest in her.Randall, in his boots, was five feet tall.A yellow skirt whipped out of her line of vision and there he was, staring at her. Not at Martha on her right…not at Lucy on her left, but smack, square at her.He was with a group of young men. One of them elbowed him in the side. Another whispered in his ear. Randall laughed…well, smirked more like it.This could only end in a way that would not please Aunt Eunice.Martha's shame was suddenly lifted when a young man asked her to dance.A flash of lavender ruffle settled into the empty chair beside Rebecca."Becca, sit up straight." Winded, her cousin Melinda frowned at her and yanked her elbow. "You are far too beautiful to be scrunched up like that."Melinda was a lively, pretty girl who rarely went without a dance partner. The one whom she had apparently abandoned in the middle of a quickstep stood alone in the revelry looking bewildered."I saw Mama talking to you. Don't pay a whit of attention to whatever she had to say."Rebecca sat up and took a long, shuddering breath."If only I could. She's set on matching me up with Randall again.""I can't imagine what Mama is thinking. Randall Pile is—""Walking this way," Rebecca groaned."If we hurry we can escape outside before he makes it across the room."For pity's sake, the man was fast. She hadn't taken three steps from her chair before he stood before her, chest puffed and looking arrogant to his boot toe."Would you care to dance, Miss Lane?"By George she would not! Sadly, the interested gazes of several people in the room turned her way. She did not wish to make a scene.Melinda's abandoned dance partner appeared out of the crowd. "Miss Winston, may I have the plea-sure…again?""Billy!" Melinda exclaimed. "How beastly of me to leave you the way I did. I'd be delighted to continue."Clearly Billy held no grudge. A grin split his face, as cheerful as the bright quarter moon visible through the window.Randall grinned as well, but it was over his shoulder at his companions, not at any pleasure over dancing with her. No doubt he had made the offer on a dare…possibly money had changed hands. One of the wallflowers giggled. And why would she not? She and Randall must look like a giraffe and a peacock engaged in some bizarre ritual. She would give her aunt this one satisfaction, then beg some indisposition and go home.A slow walk around Palmer's cornfield with the brisk night air brushing her cheeks would cleanse away the humiliation as effectively as a classical melody would. The fiddler played a twisted version of a polka. Did no one else hear the off-key screech that felt like pinpricks inside one's bones? She glanced about.Apparently not. Everyone seemed to be having a fine high time.Randall, more than most. He stomped on her skirt with every turn. His clutching, sweaty hand was bound to leave a stain on her dress.Exasperated, she glared down at the top of his head, noticing that his hair was thinning. She had the urge to blow a fleck of dandruff from his scalp. She might have made all sorts of inappropriate faces at him for all he would notice. The one and only thing the man cared to look at was her bosom. And not because it was anything more than adequate but because unless he looked up or down, it's where his gaze fell. His nose began to twitch…and sniff. He licked his lips, then for the first time he looked into her eyes. arched one brow. Why, the little maggot! She shoved him away. That ought to have been the end of it but he said, "I thought you'd be grateful."So, when he turned to walk back to his snickering friends she raised her skirt to her knee, lifted her boot and kicked him hard in the rump.Sadly for Aunt Eunice's reputation, which her aunt valued above anything, Randall lost his balance and skidded belly-first across the floor.Everyone noticed. In the chaos that followed, Melinda grabbed her hand. Together, they fled out the front door, down the steps and into the night. The moment of reckoning came at one minute past midnight, even though Aunt Eunice had arrived home an hour after the unfortunate event.Summoned, Rebecca stood before her aunt with her head bowed and her hands folded in front of her. She had taken this position many times over the years. The only difference between now and then was that when she was four years old, she had to look up into her aunt's scowl…now she looked down at it."Kindly explain why you would do such a thing…humiliate me and your poor cousins so horribly."Melinda, clearly, had not been humiliated, but Bethune and Prudence were no doubt sobbing their mortification into their pillows at this moment."I never meant to—""It's Becca who was humiliated, Mama." All of a sudden, her defender stood beside her. "That horrible little man—""Might have been willing to offer for her hand, given his own limitations.""Any man would be lucky to have our Becca!""Go to your room, Melinda," her aunt declared drily.Melinda was far too old to be told to go to her room, just as Rebecca was far too old to be taking this scolding. But by George, no one wanted to send Eunice into a temper that might go on for days. So, Melinda went to her room while Rebecca slouched another two inches.Aunt Eunice had been distressed over Rebecca's height since the day she had been dropped on her doorstep. At four years old she had towered over Bethune who was five and a half."Do you want to be an old maid, Rebecca?" Aunt Eunice arched one eyebrow. "Or worse…have people wonder if you grew up to be like your mother…that I allowed you to?"It would be difficult to know whether she committed the great sin of growing up like her mother or not. The memories of her life before coming to live with Aunt Eunice were vague. She did recall the scent of rose water, and a fairylike woman who laughed out loud but cried even louder. There was always a blur of men's faces in her memory. Sometimes she thought her mother's tears had to do with them. But just as often she wondered if it was her that had made Mama weep because she was not pretty enough to make Papa stay.It had been the dolls that made her think that. Mama carried a collection of blue-eyed princesses to whichever place they happened to be living. Papa had bought them for her, Mama liked to say, because they reminded him of her. Back then, they reminded Rebecca of angels. Later on when she thought of those pretty porcelain gifts, it hurt dreadfully. In all their travels, Mama had never left a doll behind. She'd left Rebecca behind without a backward glance."I have accepted the fact that I will, in all likelihood, remain unmarried." It stung that her aunt continued to fear that she would suddenly become promiscuous. "But I am nothing like my mother and have gone to great pains to show that I am not.""As this evening would attest? Really, Rebecca, I've done my best with you but sometimes I fear that no matter how strict I am, you rebel… You are my sister all over again."Whether that was true or not, she couldn't say. Mama had become a distant memory, buried so deep that trying to recall her face was like painting with mist."Aunt Eunice, the mother I remember is you." A woman who hid rare, tender feelings behind a starchy demeanor. She could only recall one instance when her aunt had showed her unguarded affection. When she was six years old, Rebecca had been seriously ill with a fever and her aunt had sat up with her for two days and nights, wiping her brow and crooning lullabies. During the worst of it she had even called her Becca."I regret that I shamed you, but Randall was behaving like a lewd goat. I merely defended myself.""And as usual, you dragged my Melinda into the mess."Anyone acquainted with her cousin for more than ten minutes knew that there was no dragging Melinda. She dove into life headlong, laughing while she did so.The clock on the fireplace mantel ticked off long silent seconds while her aunt stared up at her."You need a husband," she declared at last. "I hoped it would be Randall since you are of an age. But after tonight that is unlikely. But mark my words, Rebecca Louise, you will marry and marry soon."Aunt Eunice sighed loudly, glanced at the clock then back up at her."Mr. Fielding, the butcher, has asked for you. He believes that with your size, you will be helpful in the shop. Count your blessings, young lady, that the man wants a hefty girl."Hefty? Why, she was no such thing. She was slender, and if not delicate, exactly, she was by no means strapping."You may go to your room now."There were many things that she would do to keep peace with her aunt. After all, she did owe her a great deal. A widow after only five years of marriage, she had managed to raise four girls all on her own. She truly did deserve respect for that. But showing her aunt respect stopped a good deal short of marrying the butcher."Rebecca." Her aunt's voice caught her just as she made the turn from the parlor to the hall. "As horrified as I am at how you behaved tonight, I'm glad that you did not let that pitiful Randall make improper advances. Once you are under the butcher's care, you'll be safe from that sort of conduct.""Yes, Aunt Eunice," she said, but it was the last thing she meant.A footpath crossed the backyard then sloped downhill toward the creek behind the house. Rebecca followed the trail of daffodils growing beside it, watching them nod their pretty yellow heads in the glow of the low-hung moon.It was dark in the wee hours, but that didn't mean the flowers did not continue to flash their color. She decided to be like those bold little beauties …shine even during the dark hours.Sitting on a bench that she had placed beside the creek three years ago, she drew her violin from its case and began to play.As the sound filtered through the cottonwoods, her nerves began to settle. With each draw of the bow across the strings, despair melted…hope took its place. After a few moments she was smiling. The instrument always had this effect upon her. Learning to play it had come naturally."Do not, under any circumstances, marry the butcher." Melinda plopped down beside her, out of breath. She must have run all the way from the house. "I'm certain his first two wives were perfectly miserable."Melinda, her fair hair loose and tumbling, her nightshift a soft white glow in the dark, was everything lovely. Her lively, engaging spirit had a way of drawing people to her. If she decided to postpone marriage for years, she would still be snatched up in a heartbeat. Her cousin might live to be a hundred years old and still not be considered an old maid."Your mother can be very determined.""But not as determined as us… You wouldn't consider it? Please say you wouldn't!"Rebecca placed her violin in its case then cradled it across her knees."I would not, not in a million years."What was she going to do, though? Become a lifelong burden to her aunt? Eventually, when they were both old, become her caregiver?

She grew up to be very tall, which put her at a disadvantage when it came to finding a husband. Her aunt was constantly telling her that she was too tall, too plain, and so on. Rebecca's only friend was her tiny and beautiful cousin Melinda. When her aunt tries to bully Rebecca into an unwanted marriage, she decides it's time to go stay with her grandfather in Montana. The trip west was long and difficult, but Rebecca was determined. When she arrived in Coulson, the town nearest her grandfather's ranch, it was to find a place of saloons and bawdy houses and not much else. She hired a man to take her to her grandfather's ranch, but he ended up making unwelcome advances, then robbing her and running off. She was rescued by Lantree Walker, who turned out to be her grandfather's foreman.Lantree has been working for her grandfather for several years. Lantree had been a doctor until losing confidence in himself after an epidemic wiped out most of his town. He is still very protective of the people he cares for, and is suspicious of Rebecca when she arrives. He worries that she is there to take advantage of the old man, and vows to keep an eye on her. He does not expect to be attracted to her.The relationship between Lantree and Rebecca was very interesting. Their first meeting was pretty funny with each having the wrong impression about the other. I liked that they both found the humor in the misunderstanding. Both of them had sworn that they would remain unmarried. Lantree had lost his fiancee when she blamed him for not being able to save her family. Rebecca plans to remain unmarried to protect her independence, and because she feels that no one would want her anyway. Lantree's suspicions caused him to keep Rebecca at a distance until he was able to decide if she could be trusted. Once the mistrust was overcome, they developed a friendship. That friendship began to change as attraction built between them. Both of them tried to fight it. Lantree is afraid to get involved with someone that he would feel responsible for protecting. He doesn't want to risk failing. Rebecca believes herself to be completely unlovable, and thinks that Lantree is just flirting when he compliments her on her looks or abilities. Though they have no confidence in themselves, they believe in each other. I loved the way that Lantree sees Rebecca's beauty and self-reliance and tries to show Rebecca the truth. Rebecca has complete confidence in Lantree's abilities, not just as a doctor, but as a man who can keep them safe. They still resist the idea of ever being married until their hands are forced by Rebecca's grandfather and circumstances. They are forced to marry to keep Rebecca safe from those who would use her to make her grandfather cooperate with those who want his trees. She is nearly kidnapped several times. I loved Lantree's patience as he waited for Rebecca to get accustomed to their marriage. He has fallen hard for her, but doesn't think she feels the same way. Meanwhile, Rebecca has also fallen for him, but still doesn't believe in her own appeal. When her cousin arrives, Rebecca is certain that Lantree will wish he were married to her instead. Lantree has to find a way to convince Rebecca that she's the only one he wants.I also enjoyed the bit of suspense as Lantree and the others fought off those who were trying to steal the trees that Rebecca's grandfather is determined to protect. The actions of the bad guys were quite believable. I loved seeing Rebecca stand up to them. The final confrontation was quite good and had some pretty amusing moments as well. I liked the epilogue and seeing how Rebecca and Lantree are doing a few months later. The addition of some new information about Lantree's brother Boone has me hoping that he will have his own story soon.
