Carrying a King's Child (Dynasties: The Montoros), by Katherine Garbera

Review "Carrying A King's Child 4 1/2 Stars.  The honestly between Rafe and Emily creates an open line of communication that forges the bonds of a great relationship, even as the perils of public life close in, and what start out as a wild chemistry translates to a fiery and erotic passion." ~RT Book Reviews

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Emily Fielding was shaking as she stepped off the elevator into the foyer of Rafael Montoro IV's penthouse in South Beach. The Montoros had settled in Miami, Florida, decades ago, when as the royal family of Alma, they had to flee their European island homeland because of a coup. Now the dictator who'd replaced them was dead and the parliament of Alma wanted the Montoros back. With Rafe as king.Great. Happy ending for everyone. Well, everyone except for Emily, the bartender who was pregnant with the soon-to-be-king's baby. Or at least that was what her gut told her. Her gut and three home pregnancy tests. She wasn't easy to convince. She had debated not telling Rafe about the baby, but having grown up without knowing who her father was, she just couldn't do that to her own child. Sure, she'd had to lie to get up here to his very posh penthouse apartment, and she knew her timing sucked because Rafe had a lot of royal duties to attend to before his coronation, but she was still here.Getting past security hadn't been that easy, but she'd made a few calls to friends and found that one of them had a connection to Rafe via a maid service. So she'd used Maria's pass to get into the gated community and her key to get into his building.Sneaking around wasn't her style. Normally. But nothing about this situation was normal. She was shaking as she stood on the Italian marble floor and let the air-conditioning dry the sweat at the small of her back. Luxurious and well appointed, the apartment was exactly the sort of place where she expected to find Rafe. His family might have fled Alma in the middle of the night, but they'd brought their dignity and their determination with them to the United States and this generation of Montoros had truly flourished.Rafe was the CEO of Montoro Enterprises. He had been featured in Forbes long before the recent developments in Alma. He'd earned the wealth she saw around him, and the fact that he played as hard as he worked was something she could respect. She played hard, too.She forced herself not to touch her stomach. Not to draw attention to the one thing that changed everything. Since she'd looked at that stick in the bathroom and realized she was going to have a baby, everything had changed.Pretending that there was more to her visit than ensuring that her child would know who its father was would be stupid. A wealthy businessman she could have had a shot with, she thought. But not a king. Still…She'd seen photos of Alma. With its white sand beaches and castle that looked like something out of a dream, it was a beautiful place. The kind of place that she might have dreamed about as a little girl. A fairy-tale kingdom with a returning prince. Sounded perfect, right?Except that Rafael Montoro IV was a playboy and they'd had a fling. She wrinkled her nose as she tried to come up with something else to call it, but a two-night stand didn't cover it, either. One weekend spent in each other's arms. She could lose herself in the memories if she wasn't careful.Hell, she hadn't been careful. Which was precisely why she was here. Pregnant and determined. She walked down the hallway toward the sounds of Jay-Z playing in the distance. She paused in the doorway of his bedroom. She'd had to charm her way upstairs, but no way could this wait another moment. Rafe needed to know before he left. She needed to tell him.She felt queasy and swallowed hard. There were right and wrong ways to deliver this news, and as appealing to her sense of outrage as it would be to throw up on his carpet, she was hoping for a little sophistication. Just a tiny bit. After all, she'd seen pictures of his sister and jet-setting mother, though his mother wasn't really in the picture since her divorce from Rafe III. Still she was an elegant woman. She cleared her throat. She listened to Jay-Z and Kanye West singing about how there's no church in the wild. She almost laughed out loud as she watched Rafe stop packing his suitcase and start to rap along. She leaned against the doorjamb and admitted her anger was really fear. She wasn't mad at him. She just wanted him to be a different kind of guy so that she could have the fairy tale she wanted. Not a castle and a title, but a man who loved her. A man who wanted to share his life with her and raise children by her side. And no matter how fun Rafe was, his path lay somewhere else. He was duty-bound to become the constitutional monarch of Alma. She was determined to return to Key West and live out her life. She wasn't interested in being involved with a royal; besides, she'd read in the papers that the heirs would have to marry people with spotless reputations. He was really getting into dancing around the room and rapping. She applauded when he finished and he turned to look at her."What are you doing here?" he asked, shock apparent on his face. His body was tense. She suspected he was a tiny bit embarrassed to be caught rapping. Nerves made her mouthy. She knew that. So she should just say she was sorry for using her friend's key to get into his penthouse. But that wasn't her way."Hello to you, too, Your Majesty. Should I curtsy or something? I'm not sure of the rules.""Neither am I," he admitted. "Juan Carlos doesn't like it when I am seen doing something…well, so American but also undignified.""Your secret is safe with me," she said. "Who is Juan Carlos?""Juan Carlos Salazar II, my cousin, head of the Montoro Family Trust and advocate of decorum at all times.""He sounds like a stuffed shirt," she said. "I doubt I'd meet with his approval.""Emily, what are you doing here? And how did you get up here? Security is usually very hard to get past.""I have my ways.""And they are?" he asked."My charm," she said.He shook his head. "I'm going to have to warn them about feisty redheads.""I actually used a key that I procured from your maid service.""You've been reduced to criminal behavior. Cu-riouser and curiouser. Why are you here? Did you decide that you wanted to give me a proper send-off?" he asked. He strode over to her, his big body moving with an economy of motion that captivated her. The same way it had when she'd first glimpsed him in the crowded Key West bar where she worked as a bartender. He was tall—well over six feet—and muscly, but he moved with grace and she could honestly watch him all day long."Why are you here, Red? You said goodbye was forever." Goodbye. She'd meant it when he'd left. He was a rich guy from Miami and experience had shown her they were only in Key West for one thing. Having given it to him she'd wanted to ensure she didn't give into temptation a second time. "I did mean it.""Help me, Red. I don't want to jump to conclusions," he said. She chewed her lower lip. Up close she could see the flecks of green in his hazel eyes.He was easily one of the most attractive men she'd ever seen. He'd make a killing in Hollywood with those thick eyelashes and those cheekbones. It wouldn't matter if he could act, just putting him on screen would draw the masses in.She wished she were immune."I'm pregnant."He stumbled backward and looked at her as if she'd just started speaking in tongues.Pregnant! He stepped back and walked over to the Bose speaker on the dresser to turn off the music. A baby. From what he knew of the tough-as-nails-bartender, he could guess she wouldn't be standing in his penthouse apartment if he wasn't the father. His first reaction was joy.A child. It wasn't something he'd ever thought he wanted. He hardly knew Emily so had no idea if she was here for money or something else. But knowing his child was growing inside of her stirred something primal. Something very powerful. The baby was his.Maybe that was just because it gave him something to think about other than the recent decision that had been made for him. He'd been dreading his trip to Alma. He was flattered that the country that had once driven his family out had come back to them and asked him to be the next king, but he had grown up here in Florida. He didn't want to be a stuffy royal. He didn't want European paparazzi following him around and trying to catch him doing anything that would bring shame to his family. God, knew he worked and played hard."Rafe?""Yeah?""Did you hear what I said?" Emily asked. He had. A baby. Lord knew his father hadn't been the best and as a result, Rafe had thought he'd never have kids. It wasn't as if either of his parents had set a great example. And he was still young, but damn if he wasn't feeling much older every day."Yeah, I did. Are you sure?" he asked at last. She gave him a fiery look from those aqua-blue eyes of hers. He'd seen the passionate side of her nature, and he guessed he was about to witness her temper. "Would I be here if I wasn't?"He held his hand up."Slow down, Red. I didn't mean are you sure it's mine. I meant…are you sure you're pregnant?""Damned straight.""I get it. I had to take three at-home pregnancy tests and visit the doctor before I believed it myself. But trust me, Rafe. I'm positive I'm pregnant and that the baby is yours.""This is a little surreal," he said."I know," she said, with just a hint of softening on in her tone. "Listen, I know you can't turn your back on your family and marry me and frankly, we only had one weekend together so I'd have to say no. But…I don't want this kid to grow up without any knowledge of you.""Me either."She glanced up, surprised. To be honest, he sort of surprised himself. But he knew all the things not to do as a dad thanks to his own father. It didn't seem right for a kid of his to grow up without him. He wanted that. If he had a child, he wanted a chance to share the Montoro legacy…not the one newly sprung on him that came with a throne, but the one he'd carved out for himself in business. "Don't look shocked.""You've kind of got a lot going on right now. And having a kid with me isn't going to go over well.""Tough," he said. He still wasn't sure he wanted to be king of Alma. He and his siblings hadn't grown up with the attitude that they were royalty. They were regular American kids who'd never expected to go back to Alma. "I still make my own decisions.""I know that," she said. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "I've just been so crazy since I realized I was pregnant and alone. I didn't know what to do. You know my mom raised me by herself."He closed the gap between them again and pulled her into his arms. He hadn't realized she'd been raised by a single parent. To be honest, a weekend of hot sex didn't really lend itself to sharing each other's past like that. "You're not by yourself."She looked up at him. That little pointed nose of hers was the tiniest bit red and her lip quivered as if she were struggling to keep from crying. That's when he realized how out of character it was for Emily to be unsure. The baby—his baby—had thrown her for a loop as well."Thanks. I just need…I have no idea. I mean, a kid. I never expected this. But we used protection.""I didn't the third time, remember? I was out and we."She blushed and rested her forehead against the middle of his chest, wrapped her arms around his waist and held him. He'd thought he hated being trapped, but in Emily's arms this didn't feel constricting."Ugh. My mom was right.""About what?" he asked. He looked over her head at the man in the mirror and remembered how many times he'd wanted to see some substance reflected back. Was this it? Of course it was. The baby would change things. He had no idea how or why, but he knew this moment was going to be the one that helped forge his future and the man he'd become."She said all it takes is a sweet-talking man and one time to get pregnant.""I'm a sweet-talking man?" He tipped her head up with his finger under her chin."You can be.""What are we going to do?" he asked at last. It was clear she'd run out of steam as soon as she entered the room. Marriage was the noble thing to do. He knew that's what Juan Carlos would suggest, but he and Emily were strangers, and tying their lives together didn't seem smart until they knew each other better. She pushed away from him and walked over to the window. He knew the view she was afforded. This place had been hard-earned. He'd worked just as his siblings had to make Montoro Enterprises into the success it was today."I just wanted you to know. Beyond that I don't need anything. Someday the kid is going to ask about you—""Someday? I'm going to be a part of this," Rafe said."I don't see how. You're going to be jetting off to Alma to take the throne. My life is here. The baby's life will be here."He rubbed the back of his neck. The timing on this sucked. But he didn't blame Emily. He'd been running when he went to Key West, afraid to admit that he was in over his head. He'd just gotten word that his family was definitely interested in returning to Alma and as the oldest son he was expected to take the throne. He was the oldest son. He was Rafael the Fourth. He should have been in command all the time. But the truth was, he was lost.He wanted his own life. Not one that was dictated by rules and the demands of running a country. If he'd made the decision to return to Alma on his own he might feel differently but right now he felt strong-armed into it.But somehow in Emily's arms he'd found something.

Then she finds out she is pregnant, at the same time he finds out that his family is being called back to their home country to re-take the throne, which means Rafe is to be King.Emily is staunchly independent and doesn't want anything from Rafe other than she wants her child to know who their father is, as she never knew her father. Rafe wants to do right by Emily and the baby, but also wants to do right by his family and assume the throne as they all need him to do. The more he tries to figure out how to make both happen, the more he learns about how deeply he feels for Emily, and the more he realizes that he can't please everyone.I really liked Emily's strength and how much she refused to compromise her own happiness just to keep the peace with everyone else. Rafe is a really good man, always out to do the right thing. This was a great story!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very good book By S. Frank Very good book. When Rafe found out that his family is being asked to resume the throne of their homeland he is put under a lot of pressure. Needing to get away for awhile, he heads to Key West, where he has a smoking hot weekend with Emily. Both are aware that's all they'll have, until Emily discovers she's pregnant. The daughter of a single mother herself, Emily is determined that her child will know who its father is. She doesn't expect anything from Rafe, she just wants him to be aware. She has her own life and dreams and is quite used to taking care of herself.Rafe is still reeling from the news that he's expected to give up his business and become king of a country he's never been to before. There are expectations about his behavior and his future, and a great deal of pressure from his family and others. He's not so sure that he's up to the challenge, or even that he wants it. When Emily shows up and tells him about the baby, it's one more thing that he has to make a decision about.I loved seeing the relationship that built between Rafe and Emily. Emily knows that there is no way she can be a permanent part of Rafe's life, but they will be connected through their child forever. She's surprised when Rafe insists on getting to know her better. The chemistry between them is as hot as ever, and she's afraid that she's losing her heart to him. She's not surprised by his offer of marriage, but she's certain that it isn't truly the right thing to do. She would never be the right person to be a queen, and she doesn't want to stand in his way of being king. Rafe wants Emily and his baby in his life, and marriage is the best way to do that. He also knows that Emily isn't going to be easy to convince to take that step. I liked how well he understood her, and how he used his knowledge to try to court her. I really liked seeing how protective he was, especially when he realized that she wasn't used to anyone taking care of her.Rafe had a lot going on as he tried to sort everything out. I was really hoping that his family would be more supportive, but they really frustrated me. His father, since he couldn't be king himself, seemed to be intent on living it through Rafe. I didn't like the way he treated Emily when he met her. Gabe seemed to be the most understanding of his dilemma, but had an agenda of his own. Rafe's sister Bella was the nicest to Emily, and the most supportive of the idea of Rafe marrying Emily. The one that really bugged me was his cousin Juan Carlos. He was constantly nagging Rafe about the things he should be doing and telling him that he wasn't doing things right. I thought he was really obnoxious, and that maybe it was jealousy that had him being such a jerk. Rafe really hated that his life seemed destined to be run by committee. When things finally came to a head, both Rafe and Emily had to face up to their fears and feelings. There were some things said that hurt, but in the long run brought them back together. The scene in the boardroom with his family and the "committee" made my heart ache for Rafe, but also made me want to cheer for what he did. I loved the ending and look forward to seeing what the future holds for them.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. carrying a King's child By paula legate This book was ok. It didn't have much drama at all, and didn't have anything that happened to make my heart rate speed up. It was a sweet romance, with lots of red HOT passion filled nights. The chemistry between Emily, and Rafe was intense.Emily is a bartender in Key West. Her life is there, and so is her mom, step dad, and friends. She can't imagine living anywhere else. Key West Florida is her home. She spends one weekend with Rafe. Then she finds out that weekend lead to pregnancy. She finds out his family is being called back to Alma, a small country. Rafe is set to be the next King.Rafe is torn by what to do. He wants to be by Emily's side, and be a dad to their unborn child. He always wants to please his family, and do what is right. He wants to be king. This is a story with suspense. There are times in life you can't have it all. You will have to read to see what happens. Does Rafe, and Emily have a chance at Love, and marriage? Will Rafe be the next king?

The story is quite easy to follow and it is very entertaining. Just like the author, the main character's name is also Shaneeka. She was married happily before but then suddenly their marriage went through a divorce. She is having a hard time moving on because she finds her ex the best among the rest. Her husband is still the powerful man who once shattered her heart. I have to admit, the hot cover was the first thing that drew me to the book. And was I glad that the content justified it. I really enjoyed this one I have a ton of funny quips and scenes highlighted on my Kindle Reader.

Heather Woods’ extraordinary debut poetry collection, Light bearing, is a spell binding, light-charged tour de force. Shot through with ardor, compassion, love and wit, Woods invites us to “commit luminous chaos together and render havoc holy.” These poems swoon, dive, dip, swirl, twirl, and ascend to help us transcend our pedestrian daily cares. Word play offers us new angles into the spiritual and the corporeal. Lines like, “This little light of mine,/ I’m gonna fret and pine,” turn time worn lyrics on their heads and wake us from any dolor to light our way. You’ll have no need for extra candles or a flashlight if the power goes out on a windy night. This shining, glowing book of poems will light the darkest room and your world will be suddenly, brilliantly lit. Toni Mirosevich

Somebody shook, then popped the lid on, the Great Hymnal: out flew these devotional lyrics wholly recast — ravenously tender, carnally transcendent, and fearlessly pitched towards ecstasy. Heather Woods reawakens a tradition that Dickinson, George Herbert, H. D. inhabited, whereby the poet constructs a void of self as an act of seduction, a surrender to language that is also a command of sonority and syntax. Light bearing calls down the powers holily and hotly; it filled “me up such// that my seams would burst.” Aaron Shurin

Parents affected by addiction can enable their children’s substance abuse and even model addictive behaviors learned from their own parents, passing the cycle on from generation to generation. Learn what you can do to help yourself, your children, and future generations break the cycle of addiction and addictive behaviors.Having grown up with a parent in the throes of addiction, or who got physically sober but perhaps not emotionally so, you know the ravages of addiction firsthand. Through counseling, self-help groups, or classic books such as Adult Children of Alcoholics, you may have an understanding of how the patterns and behaviors associated with addiction play out within families, but applying that knowledge to your own approach to relationships and parenting is another story. In Unwelcome Inheritance, Lisa Sue Woititz combines her own insights with the unpublished contributions of her late mother, the early leader in the Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) movement, Dr. Janet Woititz, uncovering how multiple generations of people affected by addiction continue to enable their children’s substance abuse and how, without realizing it, they continue to model the addictive behaviors learned from their own parents. These ACOA pioneers then bring to light these hidden behavior patterns—including impulsivity, misplaced loyalty, people pleasing, insecure parenting styles, and multiple compulsive and addictive behaviors—so that you can take a clear look at how you got to this point. Additional points of inquiry, illustrated by stories from the trenches of the ACOA movement, help you explore what you can (and can’t) do to help your children, your children’s children, and yourself lead healthy, balanced lives.

I would love to give a copy to my adult kids. It has helped me to understand myself and my origins much better. I love how she says adult children do not have to stay stuck in the roles they have made for themselves. Encouraging and empowering.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A MUST READ! By Chris Totally loved this book! I couldn't put it down until I finished it. A beautifully written resource full of useful information for anyone who has ever lived with and/or survived the chaos of addiction in their family. This book provides an amazing opportunity to learn how to move forward, forgive and be more cognizant of our personal power to change our family dynamic. All this done through the real life story of the author with intimate details of the pain, shame, and loss in her own personal family. A book not just for those choosing to break cycles of addiction behaviors in their family but anyone looking for the inspiration and courage to make a difference in the lives of the people they love! FABULOUS!

A poignant story of substance abuse recovery and familial reconciliation By Ivan Whittenburg Across the pages of Unwelcome Inheritance Lisa Sue Woititz relates a poignant story of substance abuse recovery and familial reconciliation that spans three generations. She delivers her powerful message in an earthy rich voice that resonates with insight and hard-won experience. By exposing and probing the addictive behaviors once insidiously at work within her own precious family, Lisa inspires us all to become “catalysts of change” – to become “spiritual bridges of healing” between family members who have felt the ugly touch of addiction. Unwelcome Inheritance is a must read. Unwelcome Inheritance: Break Your Family's Cycle of Addictive Behaviors

Shy is heartbroken when she finds that her half-sister, Porsche Sims, has been found dead, the apparent victim of a lethal combination of heroin and cocaine. Only problem: Porsche wasn’t a shooter. “She was afraid of needles.” The entire Sims family is present at her funeral, except for her brother, Gary. Nobody has seen or heard from him in weeks. Now Black and Shy have their work cut out for them. They must find out what happened to her brother and catch whoever is responsible for her sister’s murder and deal with them. Meanwhile, Nick has broken up with Rain because she still insists there’s something going on between him and Wanda. Since the break up, Rain has been drinking more than she should and as a consequence, she has become very easily agitated and even quicker to pull her gun and use it. When Chris Toney tells Rain about a place that they can rob and come away with big money, Rain is all ears. The job is successful. But soon Rain and her Purple Gang find themselves outnumbered and outgunned. Rain knows that she is in over her head and turns to Black and Bobby to get her out of it.

I feel like I am a part of this group of friends, like if Mike told me to go handle something I could do it like Monica. That is seriously how much I am into this Mike Black series. And like with any group of friends (books) you have you ups and downs, your this was a good read to this was a great read. But this book here will make you absolutely fall even more in love with the series. It will bring up all those feelings you had when you picked up and read the very first book Is It A Crime. Null Set collects the slightly obsessive possibilities that rise when we give them the space—odd jobs, trouble-making, and farm boy rambling, all in dialogue with mathematics, or William Faulkner, or other poets.

From "Hypotenuse":

HYPOTENUSEI write three, erase it, blow rubbershavings from the desk. Write its notation, erase it, blow shavings. Then three 3s

erased, shavings blown, persistfor the nonce, three of nothing, nowhereattending to discrete objects for counting,

themselves objects at any rate. To kiss, sleep, and focus we know to closeour eyes, imagine. I do, see nothing.

Null Set, by Ted Mathys

Review “Mathys overloads the system, crashes the hard drive, and then sorts through the bits. . . he meanders deep into stored memories for surprising, idiosyncratic details.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review"Algebra and geometry: Mathys touches us by triggering our intellectual memories, reminding us of what we dutifully learned long ago, in school. It’s deceptively cerebral, Mathys’s way of moving us."—The Rumpus“Spiritual crisis in the face of past and present ruin might remind us of Eliot, but here the stained glass windows of Christianity are broken.”—Rain Taxi“As I read Null Set, I watch Ted Mathys steer again and again between the Scylla of Yes and the Charybdis of No, the clashing rocks of Something and Nothing, Thesis and Antithesis, and sail straight through to a third thing: a swerve, a surprise, which is one of the tells that this book is alive. . . . we in turn tell books how we incline to read them, surprising them with analogues of which they’d never dreamed. It must be abstract; it must change; it must give pleasure—Ted Mathys, Null Set.”—Bennington Review“If you’re a poet, [a null set] can become a place to list numbers from 0 to 100, or a portal for the messiness of real life to break though even the most neatly constructed equation. That’s exactly Mathys’ aim in this book—even in poems with titles such as “Hypotenuse,” the cold, logical nature of math is never allowed to crowd out the human (or a sense of humor).”—St. Louis Magazine“Null Set’s task is to join the exactness of geometry with the messiness of poetry. While difficult to say which discipline fairs better from this partnership, it is refreshing to see the metaphorical transformation of math and the mathematical rigor of poetry.”—St. Louis Post Dispatch"Explosive and lyrical."—The Volta“Intelligent and challenging while revealing a vulnerability that never reeks of weakness. Heartfelt and heady stuff.”—KDHX“Null Set begins with the word “Nothing” and ends with a dazzling sequence called “All,” and its mind is drawn towards the immaculate promises of conceptual absolutes. Its heart, however, clings to imperfect formulas—not those of math, but of intimate words and sounds. Mathys has a sparkling intelligence, a bracing capacity for wit and playfulness, and formidable technique, but the subject of Null Set is vulnerability: the struggles of bringing sufficient emotional exactness to acts of love, grief, devotion and imagination. This book asks poetry for guidance in a time of doubt. It yields, in turn, work of hard-won astonishments, moving, intense and humane. —Mark Levine"Somber, surprising, pitch-perfect, and carefully intelligent, the poems of Null Set infuse me with renewed faith in poetry's powers. I can almost feel new folds of my mind growing as I follow Mathys's images, logics, and deep reckonings with language, world, and soul."—Maggie Nelson"Null Set is a varied and vibrant book, with so much energy released in the encounters between its actively patterned verse and daily life. A cool surface often generates, unexpectedly, tender emotion—as one might feel at being moved by a Gerhard Richter painting. Through anaphora and other repetition, the poems accrete glimpses, anecdotes, resonant details, bits of family life and work, that can feel freely associative from one to another but resonate with a larger order. The effect is sometimes mournful, occasionally astringent, but finally joyful in the way that evidence outstrips argument. This is wonderful poetry, full of intelligence without pretense, its art put toward a world of feeling."—Devin Johnston"What impresses most about Null Set is how very full it is, how much of life is here. As we move through its virtual spaces—and as happens in strong poetry—the world comes strangely and familiarly both at and with us.  Of course, where we ultimately go (which may just be wherever we happen to stop) nobody knows, but Ted Mathys’ poems help us along our way."—Graham Foust"A said thing is only a said thing—though it may be true—but you can just as easily say the opposite. What if the opposite sounds just as convincing?  (What if you were to negate the most famous lines in poetry?) [Ted Mathys] negates and reverses exhilaratedly, ending up somewhere near happiness, which may be a verbal state."—Alice Notley

About the Author Ted Mathys is the author of two previous books of poetry, The Spoils and Forge, both from Coffee House Press. Originally from Ohio, he lives in St. Louis.

Mathys defamiliarizes the familiar and offers it back to us anew - from a baby playing with blocks to a set of double exposure photos. Vivid images and great sounds abound.

Increase Your Intelligence, Improve Your Memory And Maximize Your Brain Health They say we only use about 10% of our brain’s capacity. That particular myth has already been disproven, but it is true that most humans have quite a long way to go before reaching their brain’s full capability. Whether that is due to poor lifestyle habits or to a disruptive environment, it cannot be denied that any person worth their salt should make an effort to get past any initial difficulties so that s/he can realize his/her potential. The human brain is a marvel of evolution, having developed from an organ that merely guided the body’s limbs to stand upright into a veritable powerhouse that can process astounding amounts of information within seconds. Clearly, whoever coined the phrase, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste” was on to something. This book was written to help anyone who wants to maximize their brain’s potential, as well as those who would like to take preemptive measures to protect against aging’s degenerative effects on the mind. The chapters on this book are thus packed with the following information:

  • The brain’s structure and how it works, helping you to
  • Disprove the myth that emotions take root in the heart
  • Find out why some memories are harder to forget than others
  • Familiarize yourself with the brain’s part in keeping the human body alive and ticking
  • Key lifestyle changes that may seem trivial, but can actually have a great impact on boosting your brain development. Find out:
  • How something as simple as switching to your non-dominant hand can compel your brain to charge up and make new pathways
  • Why exercise benefits your mind just as much as your body
  • Why you should integrate meditation into your daily routine
  • How taking a vacation can actually help revitalize your brain
  • Why sleeping early is not advisable for everyone
  • How to figure out the best time for you to hit the sack
  • What sorts of reading material you should stock up on to improve your brain’s capacity
    • “Superfoods” that can go a long way towards boosting your brain power, provided that you eat them the right way. Discover:
    • Why oily fish like salmon and mackerel are a better source of omega-3 fatty acids than soy beans and pumpkin seeds
    • How dark chocolate can ward off mental disorders like anxiety and depression to help you focus better (and why you should do portion control when snacking on it)
    • How you should consume tomatoes so that you can get the maximum nutritional benefit
    • Which summer berry is the ultimate “superfood” for your brain, and how it can help you lower your risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease
    • Memory exercises and tricks that you can use to help you remember things better, such as:
    • Acronyms
    • Acrostics
    • Catchy Rhymes
    • Method of loci
    • And much, much more!

Within this book are some highly doable but undeniably effective ways for you to realize your brain’s ultimate potential. The question is, are you going to take the plunge and turn the page? The 21 Undeniable Secrets of Marriage, by Allen Hunt

About the Author Dr. Allen Hunt is a nationally known speaker and best-selling author. His books include: Confessions of a Mega-Church Pastor: How I Discovered the Hidden Treasures of the Catholic Church; Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody; and Nine Words: A Bible Study to Help You Become the Best-Version-of-Yourself.

Allen stepped aside July 1, 2007, as Senior Pastor at Mount Pisgah, a congregation serving more than 15,000 persons each week through all of its ministries in Alpharetta, Georgia, outside Atlanta. While at Mount Pisgah, Allen helped to develop comprehensive ministries with children and students as well as a Christian School with over 1200 students; a Beacon of Hope pregnancy resource center; and the Summit Counseling Center.

On January 6 2008, on the Feast of the Epiphany, Allen converted to Catholicism. This transition represented the culmination of a 15 year journey in which God began leading Allen home to the Church. In many ways, this transition was effected by the prayers of a group of Dominican sisters at Monastery of Our Lady of Grace in North Guilford, Connecticut, who have been praying for Allen since he shared lectures with them during the season of Lent in 1992.

Prior to full-time ministry, Allen worked in management consulting with Kurt Salmon Associates, an international leader in the textile, apparel, and retail industries. Allen was educated at Mercer (B.B.A.) and Emory (M.Div.) Universities, before earning a Ph.D. in New Testament and Ancient Christian Origins from Yale University.

Allen and his wife, Anita, live in Atlanta. They have two grown daughters.

Is drug addiction a disease that can be treated, or is it a crime that should be punished? In her probing study, Illness or Deviance?, Jennifer Murphy investigates the various perspectives on addiction, and how society has myriad ways of handling it—incarcerating some drug users while putting others in treatment.Illness or Deviance? highlights the confusion and contradictions about labeling addiction. Murphy’s fieldwork in a drug court and an outpatient drug treatment facility yields fascinating insights, such as how courts and treatment centers both enforce the “disease” label of addiction, yet their management tactics overlap treatment with “therapeutic punishment.” The “addict" label is a result not just of using drugs, but also of being a part of the drug lifestyle, by selling drugs. In addition, Murphy observes that drug courts and treatment facilities benefit economically from their cooperation, creating a very powerful institutional arrangement. Murphy contextualizes her findings within theories of medical sociology as well as criminology to identify the policy implications of a medicalized view of addiction.

Kahan "Illness or Deviance" probes the disconnect between Americans' view of drug addiction as a disease and the punitive methods used to "treat" it. Based on the author's observations of a big-city court system and two allied treatment facilities, Murphy shows that while court and rehabilitation facility staff talk about drug addiction as a "disease," what this actually means is quite hazy. Highly recommended for anyone interested in understanding America's contradictory and self-defeating drug policies.Paul KahanAuthor of "Eastern State Penitentiary: A History"

As a person in long-term recovery and who lost a dear friend to drug overdose while he was in drug court, Jennifer Murphy's book was deeply emotional. As a drug policy reform and harm reduction advocate, this book provides a wealth of resources I'll use in my work for years to come. A must read for anyone interested in the future of drug policy, treatment, and recovery in the US.
