I was so disappointed to get to the end and believe that I was going to get more only to realize that I was going to probably have to wait months, if I'm lucky, to find out what happens next. Very disappointing!

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. I couldn't put it down! By Cara Even before I started reading this book I was sure I would like it. The description had convinced me it was my type of thriller. Well, let me tell you: I didn't only like it; I loved it! "The Devil's Necktie" is a well-written novel, with just the right amount of suspense, violence, realism, and twists and turns to keep you glued to the pages. But what I liked most was that I could see the action unfold like a movie, which completely disconnected me from the outside world, and took me right beside the characters.Jack Bertolino is a retired inspector who is trying to live a normal, peaceful life, away from the world of cops, criminals and drug dealers. When a confidential informant whom he worked with before calls him and tells him they need to talk, Jack has a feeling that his new-found peace won't last for long. After all, Mia is one of the most beautiful and intelligent women he's ever met, so how could he refuse to see her? After he spends the night with her, he finds out that she is in need of protection. Unfortunately, he has no idea how bad it is, and he leaves her alone in the house only to find her dead half an hour later. To make things worse, he becomes the prime suspect.Jack is a very likeable character. He thinks and acts fast, he is always one step ahead, and he is determined to find the one responsible for Mia's death. It was also nice to see him as a father who is trying to spend more time with his teenage son now that he is retired. He is proud of Chris, and the relationship they have is quite special. All these aspects make Jack a realistic and complex character that readers will easily relate to.Another thing that I liked was how the story is written from different points of view. It was interesting to see the facts through the dealers' eyes. Don't worry, this won't help you solve the case faster. The author has a great talent when it comes to building up the suspense and structuring the narratives in such a way that everything makes perfect sense at the end. If you like crime novels, you will love "The Devil's Necktie", trust me. It will take you by surprise.

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Devilishly Fun By Bruce Cervi The best storytellers make it look easy. In Crime Noir, you want to encounter layered scenes, crisp pacing, bad guys you want to see brought to rough justice and a lead character who is complex and sympathetic and tough all at the same time. Well, look no farther than The Devil's Necktie to get generous helpings of all-of-the-above. John Lansing is clearly a writer who knows and enjoys this domain, and his latest will grab you from the get-go. His is a unique and singular voice in a genre that is well represented, to say the least. Carve out some time and take this ride. You're in good hands.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Surely Caused My Addiction to Fiction By R. Ball This is a book of firsts for me. It's the first book that I've bought and read on my iPad Kindle app. Also, I rarely read fiction books. I primarily read non-fiction. Somewhere in my early years I must have picked up the belief that reading was solely for learning. Oops, so wrong. I actually had a discussion with a friend of mine. He said that fiction was a great escape from the stresses of everyday life, and he suggested that I read, "The Devil's Necktie." And that's where my addiction to fiction began.I loved reading, "The "Devil's Necktie." It's a refreshing escape, an energizing brain break. The book provides a wonderful mix of elements in one package -- sex, humor, mystery, cops, crime, cars, drugs, gangs -- you name it. So sly, Lansing had me hooked and cleverly reeled me in successively at every page. The dialogue was snappy and flowed well. In particular, I enjoyed and grinned at the funny parts -- little dry, witty zingers. As a writer, John Lansing knows how to paint images with words in a unique and very refreshing way. The book is a highly entertaining read. It just yanked me in. I was fascinated with the main character, Jack Bertolino. No doubt, "The Devil's Necktie," is the cause of my new addition to fiction.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Lexi Vanderbilt's mother taught her two very important lessons. One, always wear coordinating lipstick, and two, recognize an opportunity when it presented itself.Standing in the ballroom of the newly renovated Gold Coast Country Club, Lexi planned on employing those lessons. All around her workers prepared for the throng of club members who would descend in—she checked her watch—ninety-three minutes. As the interior designer about to unveil her latest masterpiece, she would spend those ninety-three minutes tending to everything from flowers to linens to centerpieces. A waiter toting a tray of sparkling champagne glasses cruised by. She took in the not-so-perfect cut of his tux and groaned. The staff's attire wasn't her jurisdiction. Still, small details never escaped her. At times, like now, it was maddening.Oh, and just wait one second. "Excuse me," she said to a woman carrying a stack of tablecloths. "The sailboat ice sculpture belongs on the dessert table by the window. The Willis Tower goes by the champagne fountain."The woman hefted the pile of linens, a not-so-subtle hint that the sculptures weren't her problem. "Does it matter?"If it didn't, I wouldn't ask. Lexi sighed. "It matters. Unless you'd like to tell your boss, who specifically requested the placement of the sculptures, that it doesn't."For added effect, Lexi grinned and the woman rolled her eyes. "I'll get the busboys to move it.""Thank you."One minicrisis averted. And maybe she could have let that one slide given that the club's manager had to be 110 years old and most likely wouldn't remember which sculpture went where, but why take a chance on something easily fixed?Besides, tonight everything had to be perfect.Functions attended by the richest of the rich were a breeding ground for opportunities. Opportunities Lexi craved for her fledgling design company. At twenty-nine, she'd already been profiled by the Banner-Herald and all the major broadcast stations in the city. She was quickly gaining ground on becoming Chicago's "it" designer, and that meant dethroning Jerome Laddis, the current "it" designer. He may have had more experience, but Lexi had youth, energy and fresh ideas on her side. A few more insanely wealthy clients touting Lexi's work and look out, Jerome. Then she'd hire an assistant, rehab her disaster of a garage into an office and get some sleep.Lots of it.Right now, as she glanced around, took in the exquisite silk drapes, the hundred-thousand-dollar chandelier and hand-scraped floor she'd had flown in from Brazil, no questions on the tiny details would haunt her. She'd make sure of it. Even if stress-induced hospitalization loomed in her near future. The upshot? She'd lost five pounds in the past two weeks. Always a silver lining."Alexis?"Lexi turned, her long gown swishing against the floor and snagging on her shoe. She smiled at Pamela Hennings while casually adjusting her dress. Darnedfloor-length gowns. "Mrs. Hennings, how nice to see you."Mrs. Hennings air-kissed and stepped back. On her petite frame she wore a fitted gown in her signature sky blue that matched her eyes. The gown draped softly at the neckline, displaying minimal cleavage. As usual, a perfect choice."I love what you've done in here," Mrs. Hennings said. "Amazing job."Being a club board member, she had no doubt shown up early to make sure the unveiling of the new room would be nothing short of remarkable. "Thank you. I enjoyed it. Just a few last-minute details and we'll be ready.""Everything is lovely. Even the damned ice sculptures Raymond couldn't live without. Waste of money if you ask me, but some battles aren't worth fighting."So true.A loud bang from the corner of the room assaulted Lexi's ears. Please let that be silverware. She shifted her gaze left and spotted the waiter who'd passed her earlier scooping utensils onto a tray. Thank you.Mrs. Hennings touched Lexi's arm. "By the bye, I think I have Gerald convinced his study needs an update. All that dark wood is depressing."Now, that would be a thrill. If Lexi landed the job and nailed it, the top 10 percent of Chicago's executives would know it. And competition ran hot with this social set. Before long, they'd be lined up outside her office for a crack at outdoing Pamela and Gerald Hennings."I think," Lexi said, "for him we could leave touches of the dark woods. Macassar ebony would be fabulous on the floor.""Ooh, yes. Do you have time this week? Maybe you could come by and work up some sketches?""Of course." Lexi whipped her phone from her purse and scrolled to her calendar. "How about early next week? Tomorrow I'm starting a new project that might eat up the rest of my week.""I'll make sure I'm available. What's this new project? Can you share?"Rich folks. Always wanting the inside scoop. "Actually, it's quite fascinating. Remember the murdered broker?""The one from Cartright? How could I not? The entire neighborhood went into a panic."The residents of Cartright, the North Side's closest thing to a gated community without the gates, employed private security to help patrol the six city blocks that made up their self-titled haven. That extra money spent on security kept the crime rate nearly nonexistent in those six city blocks.Except for the offing of one crooked stockbroker."That's the one," Lexi said. "I've been hired to stage the house. The real-estate agent suggested it to the broker's widow and she hired me.""I heard they couldn't sell. The market is destroying her. That poor woman. He left her with a mountain of trouble. He paid top dollar and if she lowers the price again, she won't make enough to clear his debts. Add to that any retribution owed to the clients he borrowed funds from without their knowledge."As expected, Pamela Hennings was up to speed on the latest gossip. Gossip that Lexi would not share. Being told this information about a client was one thing.Sharing it? Not happening. "I'm looking forward to the project. It's an incredible house."Being an interior designer didn't always give Lexi the chance to change someone's life. Her work allowed people to see the beauty in color and texture and shape and made their homes more than just a place to live, but she didn't often get the opportunity to alter an emotionally devastating situation. Now she had the chance. Getting this house sold would free the broker's widow from debt and give her children a comfortable life. And Lexi wanted to see that happen.Plus, if she got the thing sold in forty-five days, she'd make a whopping 20 percent bonus. The bonus alone would pay for an assistant and give her a life back.Nap, here I come.Mrs. Hennings made a tsk-tsk noise. "They never did find the murderer, did they?""No. Which I think is part of the problem. I may do a little of my feng shui magic in there. Clear all the negativity out. When I'm finished, that house will be beautiful and bright and homey.""The debt, the children and now the police can't find the murderer. And it's been what, two years? No woman deserves to be left with that."Again, Lexi remained quiet. Don't get sucked in. But, yes, it had been two years, and from what Lexi knew, the police were no closer to finding the man's killer. Such a tragedy. "The case has gone cold."Sucked in. She smacked her lips together."You know," Mrs. Hennings said, "my husband's firm recently did some work with a pro bono cold case. I wonder if the investigator who worked on that wouldn't mind taking a look at this. I'd love to see the man's family given some relief. And, let's face it, it would certainly be good PR for the firm." It certainly would.Investigative help wouldn't hurt the real-estate agent's chances—or Lexi's—of getting the house sold in forty-five days. "Do you think they'd be interested?""Oh, I'm sure it can be arranged."Gerald Hennings, aka the Dapper Defense Lawyer, pushed through the oversize ballroom doors, spotted the two women and unleashed a smile. Even in his sixties, he had charm to spare. Salt-and-pepper hair and the carved cheekbones of a man who'd once been devastatingly handsome—all combined with his intelligence—added up to someone who ruled a courtroom."Gerald," Mrs. Hennings said, "perfect timing. The board meeting will be upstairs. Believe it or not, we're the first ones here."The Dapper DL eyed his wife with a hint of mischief, smiling in a rueful way that probably slayed jurors. "Shocking." Then he turned his charm loose on Lexi. "Alexis Vanderbilt, how are you?""I'm fine, Mr. Hennings. Thank you. And yourself?""I was quite well until fifteen seconds ago when my wife announced my timing was perfect. That means I'll either be writing you a healthy check or she's volunteered me for something. Either way, I'm sure it will be painful."Brodey Hayward blew out a breath as he watched his sister saunter into the Hennings & Solomon reception area. Finally she'd stopped wearing her blouses unbuttoned to her belly button. He never needed to see that much of Jenna's skin and said a silent thanks to whichever saint covered brothers in distress.Jenna stopped in front of him and gave him a half hug so she didn't bump his sling and the wrecked arm inside of it."Nice shirt," he said. She waved him off. "Don't start."Hey, he couldn't help it if he had opinions. "Just commenting is all.""How's the elbow?""It works.""So, it's killing you."He didn't bother answering. What good would it do? Six weeks ago he'd blown out his elbow changing a damned tire. The guys at the precinct tore that one up. Hey, Hayward, helluva way to go out on disability. Hey, Hayward, you 'd better make up a better story. Hey, Hay-ward, real detectives don't get hurt changing a tire. Each day a slew of texts came in from his squad mates, and it didn't look as if the taunting would end soon because the surgery on his elbow left him with a raging infection that earned him a second surgery and another six weeks of leave. Leave that was slowly, deliberately, driving him insane. Torture was the only way to describe the abundance of nothingness that filled his days. As a homicide detective, he could tolerate a lot of things.Boredom was not one of them.Hell, he'd even taken to driving to his parents' house each day for cop talk with his retired detective father. A week into that, his mother had booted him and told him to get a life. Thanks, Mom.Jenna motioned him down the long corridor. "Thanks for coming in first thing. We're meeting in the conference room. You sure you're okay with this?""Yeah. I'm not getting paid. All I'm doing is giving you my opinion, right?""Right.""Then I'm not violating any rules."Jenna—a private investigator for Hennings & Solomon—had called him the night before asking if he'd assist on a cold case that somehow landed in her lap. Why not? He could kill time—no pun intended—and keep his mind sharp for his eventual return to the job. Plus, there'd be no emotional involvement with this case. Technically, it wasn't his, so he could walk away without running himself through a meat grinder over it."Good. I've looked over all the files, but I'm missing something."Brodey followed Jenna while eyeing the art lining the walls. Some would call it modern. He'd call it weird with all those slashes of color, but whatever. Art meant a real picture of something. A woman in a park, a kid flying a kite, something he could look at and recognize. This hoity-toity stuff, he didn't get. They reached the conference room, where a huge whiteboard smothered with notes and charts covered one wall. His sister had been busy. She'd also done a fine job of organizing her evidence. She gestured to the wall. "I have it all laid out for you. Just the way Dad taught us."He wandered to the board and glanced at Jenna's notes. Victim's name, Jonathan Williams. Scene of the crime, brownstone on the cushy North Side. Cause of death, gunshot to the head."Crime-scene photos?""No. I was hoping you or Dad could help with that." Not if he wanted to stay under the radar he couldn't. "I'll talk to Dad. Tell me again how you got this case.""It's kind of convoluted.""It always is, Jenna.""Remember how I worked on Brent's mom's murder case a few months back?"How could a guy forget Brent, the giant deputy US marshal who had stolen his sister's heart and managed to convince her she didn't need to walk around half-naked for people to notice her? Brent had enough baggage to fill a 747 jet and Jenna had still fallen in love with him. If nothing else, it showed a boy could overcome a rotten childhood and grow into an honorable man."So this has to do with Brent?""No. Mrs. Hennings. She was the one who convinced my boss to take on Brent's case. She's at it again with this one."Did someone say convoluted? "Oooookay.""Mrs. Hennings attended a social function and ran into a decorator she knows."Brodey gawked. A decorator? This should be good.Jenna held her hand up before he could crack wise. "The decorator was hired by a real-estate agency to stage the house of the murder victim. The house has been on the market for two years and they're about to drop the price. Before they did that, the victim's estranged wife—they were separated, but not yet divorced—wanted to try redecorating it. I suppose when a house is worth close to two million hiring a decorator isn't an issue."Brodey let out a low whistle. "I'll say. Why am I here?""The decorator told Mrs. Hennings about the house, and here we are.""What do you get out of it?""My boss's undying gratitude for keeping him out of trouble with his wife."Brodey laughed. One thing about Jenna, she knew how to stay on a man's good side. He pointed to the board."Whatcha got?""You may remember this case. He was a stockbroker living the good life until the market crashed. For years he'd basically been running a Ponzi scheme with his clients' money. His marriage fell apart and he was drowning in debt. The FBI eventually caught up to him and he was under investigation.""He was murdered before the Feds charged him, right? Is that the guy?""Yes. On the day his body was found, he didn't show up for a meeting with his biggest client. That was unusual so his firm called his wife. Apparently he hadn't updated his emergency contact at the office so her cell phone was the only number they had.""Ah, damn. Don't tell me the ex found him."Jenna nodded. "In the laundry room."Poor woman. Brodey still hadn't gotten used to viewing murder victims' bodies, inhaling that nasty metallic odor of blood and trying to remain unaffected. Forget about a loved one. That? No way.Refusing to give in to his thoughts, Brodey stood, arms folded, studying the board. "I think I remember this. Looked like a robbery gone bad, right?""Yes. In the two years since the murder, the widow has spent most of the insurance money settling their debts, but she's not in the clear yet. It's a mess. With the divorce pending, the finances hadn't been worked out. The house was paid off, but she can't unload it and needs the cash.""Enter our illustrious decorator."Jenna gave him a snarky grin. "You're so smart."Whatever, wisenheimer. "The house is empty?""Yes. Why?"He waved at the board. "No photos. I don't know what you want me to do without seeing the crime scene."His sister should have known he'd need photos or some kind of visual. Or maybe that was just the way his mind worked. Needing to see how the crime occurred, run the scenarios, figure the timing and options. All of it helped him work a case."I wasn't sure how involved you wanted to be."Outside of being bored out of his skull, he didn't want to be involved. He'd made detective only a year ago and wasn't about to aggravate his boss by poking around in another guy's case. This case wasn't even his jurisdiction. This belonged to the North Side guys, while he worked Area Central."Yeah, but I can't help you if I don't know what I'm dealing with. Take me to the house. I'll walk through it and then study what you have here. Then I'll tell you what I think, and I'm out."Tops, he was looking at two days of research. Two days of not being bored. Two days of getting closer to the end of his disability leave. All he had to do was pony up an opinion and send his little sister on her way.Piece of cake.

The storyline is sure to pull you in and keep you hooked until you’ve read the very last page.Lexi Vanderbilt is an interior designer (not a decorator) hired to help stage a house that has been vacant for the past two years in order to facilitate the sale of it. If she can redesign the home and it sells within forty-five days of her hire date, she will earn an extra twenty percent commission; thereby allowing her the ability to hire an assistant so she won’t have to work all day and all night to make her business grow and flourish. Part of her design process is not to just repaint and add frills, but to change and gut some rooms in the house. The problem: one of the rooms she wants to change was the scene of a murder two years ago.Brodey Hayward is a Homicide Detective on medical leave. Since he is bored and “itching for something to do”, he agrees to review the case for his sister who has been hired pro bono to solve the cold case murder that occurred in the home that Lexi is redecorating. Brodey tries to only give his sister one day of looking at the case because he could get in trouble with his superiors since he is on leave. The problem: Brodey can’t just give one day to reviewing the information. Since he is still looking at every piece of information he can get his hands on, he will not let Lexi tear apart the room in which the murder was committed until he is satisfied he has exhausted all possibilities.Lexi is indirectly responsible for Brodey being there to begin with, but all she can see are dollar signs and she wants him to go away. As Lexi becomes a target for her involvement in resurrecting the “cold case”, Brodey wants to protect her and solve the murder even if it means trouble for him. The more Lexi and Brodey are around each other, the more their attraction grows. They each have their issues with each other: Being a Homicide Detective, Brodey looks at life through a jaded prism while Lexi looks at life through rose colored glasses. Can Lexi get Brodey to ease up on being overly cautious so he can live life without always being in detective mode? Can Brodey get Lexi to learn to be more aware of her surroundings so she won’t be so vulnerable? You will have to read The Detective to find out. Ms. Giordano even has an interesting twist to the story as the murderer is found.I always look forward to reading anything written by Adrienne Giordano. The Detective did not disappoint me as I not only enjoyed the storyline but the well developed characters of Brodey and Lexi. I give this book a solid 4-star rating; I would have given it 5-stars if there was more action involved as Lexi is being stalked.*** I received an advanced copy for an honest review that is my own. ***

By Lynn B It all starts with Lexi Vanderbilt being hired to redecorate a house where a murder occurred two years prior so the remaining family can sell it and move on. A friend of Lexi's is intrigued by the story behind the house and gets a Private Investigator her husband works with to look into the cold case to see if she can find any additional info. The P.I., Jenna Hayward, asks her Detective brother Brodey who is out on medical leave at the moment to look over the files with her and give her his opinion.Brodey gets under Lexi's skin the second he arrives at the house and they get into a tiff over the scene of the crime being changed. They begin to work together on the investigation when little things keep happening and turning up that lead them to believe they have stumbled upon the killer. Will Brodey be able to keep Lexi safe when the person they suspect turns his sights on her? Have they actually solved this crime? Will Lexi forgive Brodey when he disappoints her by not sharing enough info? Read the book to find out! Very enjoyable read!

Dang…now I’m going back and buying The Marshal just because I want to find out how Brent and Jenna got together. Its also where we are introduced to Brody, Jenna’s brother. Don’t worry about reading a book before this one. Ms. Giordano catches you up but dang it…now I need to know about them.Brody would have been your typical alpha/cop/wounded hero if not for his family. Oh yes, mom/dad/Jenna. They all have a part in this book that makes Brody more approachable and real. He’s got a good heart and when it comes to the safety and well being of the people that he loves, intrusive doesn’t even cover it. Of course this doesn’t sit well with Lexi and therefore, our story begins.Lexi is a great heroine. Strong, smart and knows what she wants and goes out and gets it. What she didn’t want was someone like Brody entering her world, at the worse possible time. But hey, killers don’t keep a calendar. But Brody is exactly what she needed in her life. In fact, Brody and Lexi couldn’t be more opposite but that’s what makes this couple shine. They complimented each other, teased/flirted and generally gave as good as the other one. Plus…Brody has a mouth when it comes to…What I didn’t see coming was how the whole twisted plot ended. I kinda figured it out but then…BAM!!!! Didn’t see the major twist at the end. I love it when a mystery/suspense writer can surprise me. Especially at the end, just when I have it figured out. Ha Ha!!!! That’s what will make me now stalk/obsess/auto buy from Ms. Giordano from now on. She surprised me and kept me on my toes. She wrote characters that didn’t need “saving” but ended up saving each other for a real chance at a relationship. The ending was sweet but not sappy. Brody messed up and Lexi needed him to grovel just a bit.A few more things: $20k for a couch. Yep, I can see why Brody liked it. *wink* But a peach ceiling, I’m not so sure about. Also, Lexi really deserves that assistant now. Just saying…

Prepper's Natural Medicine: Life-Saving Herbs, Essential Oils and Natural Remedies for When There is No Doctor, by Cat Ellis

About the Author Cat Ellis is a practicing herbalist and avid prepper. Her love of herbs began with “pretty things”, like sachets and scents. After using herbs to recover from a severe bout with influenza in 1999, however, her focus became fixed upon the medicinal properties of plants. Cat's interest in prepping began in 2008 when her household faced a loss of income due to the failing economy. Both interests melded together earning her the nickname, “The Herbal Prepper”. Cat Ellis is a homeschooling mom who teaches herbalism, aromatherapy, and food storage techniques in New England. Cat regularly blogs and podcasts on her website, HerbalPrepper.com.

By Samadhi This book is the next best thing to having Cat Ellis sitting in your living room or better yet, helping you make some of the tinctures, extracts or salves with you in person. From start to finish this is written for a time you might not have access to conventional medicine but need it. That said, you will realize as you begin reading you will be gathering materials soon after reading. The only thing that would be better would be having every one of these salves, tinctures or extracts already made up in a corner cupboard ready to use. This book is written as though Cat Ellis is talking to you. She has done her research and not only has she covered ingredients, how-to instructions, when various things might be appropriate to use, she obviously knows human physiology and anatomy, the herbs she speaks about and their effects on the body. She has backed up her work with resources and studies, and is very specific about how to prepare nature's medicines for use safely. What I appreciate is the way Cat Ellis talks to you throughout the book. She draws from real life experience and hours of research and hard work. She also brings home the fact that this is not always a substitute for conventional medicine. Some things cannot be helped by herbal preparations and require immediate hospital care- if it's available. If not, this is a book I will be happy to have with me and hopefully I will be able to gather enough ingredients to start making my own 'Nature's First Aid Kit' right away. I won't be sorry. If I had to want anything more, I'd want a plastic cover for this book because it's going to get handled quite a bit.

73 of 80 people found the following review helpful. the book fails to mention widely-available North American wild plants like Yellow Mustard By Infinite Loop Found book to be somewhat interesting to certain degree but lacking critical info. and basically ignoring the entire world of traditional Native American and Appalachian folk medicine. Native Americans often used live plants as-is with very little preparation beyond a little cutting, grinding and squeezing. Most of the herbs discussed in this book have to be purposely grown or purchased -- something that may not be a viable option in a prepper / survival situation where mobility is a factor. You gotta use whatever is in your immediate environment. Likewise, most of the remedies covered in the book require days, if not weeks, to prepare -- also not an option for someone on the move.Major pet peeve: the book fails to mention widely-available North American wild plants like Yellow Mustard, Garlic Mustard, Alfalfa, American Mistletoe, Antelope Sage, Aspen, Hops, Mint and Bloodroot, just to name a few. I pulled these from a list of traditional Native American medicinal plants; the kinds of plants a survivalist / prepper can easily find growing along country dirt roads, fallow fields and forested areas throughout most of North America. Yeah, space is limited and, as a writer, you have to draw the line somewhere -- you can't cover them all -- but a lot of this stuff grows wild all over the place and just wasn't mentioned in the book. Your typical old fallow field or open natural grassland can literally be a drug store if you know what to look for and how to use it.The author did a fairly good job of showing how to prepare the various medicines and remedies mentioned but I felt the focused too much on complex preparations as opposed to plants and herbs that can be used as is or with minor preparation work. If you're into doing this kind of stuff at home, then I suppose the book could be a passable how-to reference guide.Big disappointment: this isn't a "prepper" book per se. When the "Big One" hits there won't be ANY functioning stores. The traditional market economy will have fallen completely apart; no Walgreens, no Walmart, no internet, no Amazon, no Home Depot, no health food stores and no place to buy herbs or anything else. If you live in an urban area, you're going to have to move to the country. We're going back to basic pioneering days my friends, it's going to be Woods-Craft 101! You're going to be focused on living day-to-day, there'll be no time to grow herbs or make your own alcohol and apple vinegar. If I'm traveling through the countryside, what essential plants should I grab along the way to put into my medicine bundle? With that mindset, I had all kinds of questions while reading, for example: in a pinch could one use plain old common red clay in place of Bentonite? Would that work? The author did a decent job covering the preparation for each remedy; that's fine, but what if I'm out in a simple cabin in the woods and don't have access to apple vinegar, grain alcohol and a fully-functional kitchen? I don't have time to mix up a batch of XYZ and let it cure / ferment for two weeks, I need something NOW! What could I find in a couple of hours of tromping around a typical field, wet land or woods in North America? How would I extract oil from Birch bark to make mosquito repellant?. How would I use skunk Cabbage to heal some nasty briar cuts?. That's the kind of stuff I was expecting, but the book came up short. Some color illustrations of the various herbal plants would have been helpful for those of us new to the hobby. Maybe a short section on how to create & maintain a herb garden? This book seems oriented more towards your typical home-gardening DYI herbalist as opposed to a prepper / survivalist forced to live in the wild. If you come across a copy at your local library (as I did), I'd say it'd be worthwhile to bring home for a quick peruse but can't recommend buying it. Most of this info. is available at various internet sites, the book doesn't really add anything radically different unless you want to add another cookbook to your kitchen library. Here're a couple of interesting sites dedicated to traditional Native American medicine:www.legendsofamerica.com/na-herbs.htmlnativeamericanherbalism.com/

By Liz Winter Good book, not necessarily new information (if you enjoy reading herbal medicine books, that is) but it is well organized and info is presented in a very reader-friendly manner. Although the book is written by a prepper and for preppers, it doesn't have the sense of urgent doom and gloom that so many others have. Just good, common sense herbal medicine information that can benefit anyone--whether they are expecting the end of times or not.

Being accused of wrongdoing is one of life’s most wrenching experiences. Threatened with lasting stigma, broken relationships, financial ruin, and possibly prison, the accused is thrown into a bewildering new reality and needs ways to get oriented, survive and move forward. The Strength of a Free Mind is a collection of powerful meditations on the spiritual, social and emotional issues facing the accused. The book covers such crucial topics as embarrassment, abandonment, betrayal, isolation, loneliness, anger, regret, self-pity, suicide, humility, hoping and waiting, loss, laughter, slowing down, silence, prayer, strength, endurance, joy, withdrawal, healing, forgiving, and consolation. These meditations for the accused are useful to anyone who has been mistreated, attacked, stigmatized, or excluded, and to their family members and others who want to help. Kent Roberts was caught up in a 2006 financial scandal. One newspaper called him the “Stock Option Backdating Poster Boy.” “In addition to my many legal issues, I faced issues of the spirit,” he writes. “Where could I turn for help? I found my help from the formerly accused. They knew what was happening inside and around me. In my new circumstances, the Bible took on a different, very relevant meaning for me. For the first time, I really focused on the fact that Jesus and Paul, and, before them, Joseph, Moses, David, Elijah, Jeremiah, and John the Baptist had all been accused!” The Strength of a Free Mind is for someone who has been accused from someone who has been there.

Understanding/Sanity for the Accused by a Truly Great Man - Must Read for All (& their family/friends) Hog-Tied by the System: By Jim Treacy An absolutely incredible book by Kent Roberts! A very real look into the mind of those feeling the full weight of a somewhat broken US justice system -- one where i) prosecutors act with impunity, eye on million-dollar law partnerships or high political office; ii) pampered, lifetime-appointed judges rule to political agendas; & iii) prisons are valued as blue collar job creators that additionally line many a politician's (and/or their backers) pocket -- And a tour de force on how to not let in break you. Believe me, I know. I've walked in Kent's shoes. This gracious man reached-out to me during my turn in the wringer. An entirely unnecessary act, as we'd never met, but one I'll always hold in high esteem. Proud to call him my friend!

The chapters were short and covered topics that can be useful to anyone just trying to navigate this life—you don’t have to be accused of anything. It can apply to many different aspects of dealing with people who act less than Christian toward you. What I really liked about it were the spiritual references and the Bible stories. I hadn’t looked at those stories of accused prophets and Jesus Christ with much analysis before, and I was enlightened as to the comfort and wisdom they offered.I was amazed at the author’s faith in God and Jesus Christ throughout his ordeal. He went through the refiner’s fire and came out a stronger, better man. This is a must-have book for your personal library, and there should be multiple copies in every prison library in America.

By BooksAboutArt This wonderful book by Kent Roberts shows how one derives strength and courage through faith in dealing with circumstances where all reason points toward despair and hopelessness. The book discusses Kent’s painful but ultimately victorious journey through one of the worst situations that a person can face in society – to be accused of a crime – and how faith sustained and counseled him through those difficult times. The Strength of a Free Mind is one of the most calming books I have read in a long time. I read it twice and find myself re-reading parts of it whenever I am distressed, unsure or upset.– Prabhat Goyal, California

'Roots of TM' is intended to enable readers to better understand how and why Maharishi Mahesh Yogi spread the teaching of Transcendental Meditation around the world. 'Roots of TM' provides background information on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and his master, Guru Dev, Swami Brahmanand Saraswati, and provides a source book of information about their teachings and techniques. 'Roots of TM' is not intended as a general guide to Indian philosophy, or as a study of the many ancient spiritual practices of India, nor as a mantra handbook. 'Roots of TM' offers information about Maharishi's 'missing years', from the time when his master passed away through to the gradual build up of his stated mission to spiritually regenerate the world; 'Why can't we spiritually regenerate the world through this technique?' he asked. 'Roots of TM' contains numerous quotations and rare transcripts of lectures by Guru Dev and by Maharishi. Furthermore, it details the course of events that would eventually find Maharishi lecturing at the Masquers Club, an actor's social club in Hollywood. It also tells how Maharishi came to adopt quite a businesslike attitude to money matters, and how he planned to create a headquarters high in the Himalayas where he intended to train others to teach transcendental meditation. 'Roots of TM' digs deeply into rare materials in order to give detailed profiles of the teachings of both master and disciple, thus affording readers an opportunity to make informed comparisons of both these teachers' methods and their objectives. Author Paul Mason explains:- "By the mid-1960's the term 'Transcendental Meditation' became fixed after Maharishi Mahesh Yogi spread the message of meditation far and wide across the free world. Maharishi then became very famous himself, largely due to his public association with celebrities, and in particular the world famous pop group The Beatles who in 1968 attended an advanced training course with him in India. When I traveled to India in 1970 I did so by hitch hiking from Britain, across many countries of the Middle East before finally finding myself in North India. Possibly because The Beatles had done so before me, I decided to visit the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, just for 'a cup of cocoa and a chat about philosophy', and therefore made my way to the pilgrimage town of Rishikesh, surrounded by jungle. Having crossed the River Ganges and climbed up to Maharishi Ashram, I was introduced there to a practice referred to as 'transcendental' meditation. The teaching of this 'Transcendental Meditation' or 'TM' is preceded by a short ceremony called a puja, conducted before a portrait of an Indian teacher, an ascetic called Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, known to TM meditators as 'Guru Dev'. Surprisingly, despite the fact that Swami Brahmanand Saraswati was a prominent and influential public speaker, Maharishi's organisations share but scant information about Guru Dev's life story and disclose nothing about his teachings. Little was then known about the early life of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, or about the origins and history of the teaching of Transcendental Meditation, so I set myself to uncover as much information as I could find. In the 1990's I was commissioned by Element Books to write the biography of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, which was published as 'The Maharishi: The Biography of the Man Who Gave Transcendental Meditation to the World'. Later, in 2007 an ambition was fulfilled when a 3-volume set of books on Guru Dev was published, all based on my translations of Hindi works on Swami Brahmananda. 'Roots of TM' is really the distillation of decades of research into the teachings of Maharishi, Guru Dev, and the Shankaracharya tradition."

Lynch Jr. This tome by Paul Mason is truly a remarkable book of great depth and tremendous compassion. It is like taking a retreat in the 1960’s directly with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as your guide. The book definitely shows the very roots of TM and the significance and power of the TM technique itself.Indeed in the very first few pages of the book you get a wonderful overview, in Maharishi’s own words, on the TM methodology itself. For someone like me who was initiated into my sitting mantra by my fantastic and late Aunt Initiator Effie Neville in 1976 it was like taking a shower in a cool stream. It reawakened in me the whole approach of effortlessness and naturalism that is at the very root of TM. Immediately upon absorbing the words that Paul relayed I found my meditation progressing at a much deeper level than before. These first few pages would be worth ten times the price of the book alone they were that valuable! As if this wasn’t enough the book touches on the greatness, majesty and compassion of the late Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath Swami Brahmanand (better known as “Guru Dev”). The book shows just what type of devoted devotee Maharishi was to Guru Dev and that his love of Guru Dev motivated his entire effort at spreading the “TM technique”. Mr. Mason shows that Maharishi’s whole being and life was devoted to distilling the truth as espoused by Guru Dev and not just his “own” cobbled together theories. In this way the author subtly address Maharishi’s various detractors with aplomb. Those who frequently claim that “Maharishi just made up the TM technique as some kind of pop meditation technique which is designed to lure the uniformed and to enrich his own personal fortune.“ That by showing the deep spiritual connection that Maharishi had with Guru Dev and that he could have hardly started such activities without other authorized devotees of Guru Dev knowing precisely what Maharishi was teaching.Through Mr. Mason’s exposition we gain an appreciation of the deep power of Guru Dev in a way that finds him very approachable but still awe inspiring. In this way Mr. Mason, without interjecting his own interpretations, skillfully distills from the very words of Guru Dev and Maharishi their deep and unbounded love for all of humanity.I was and am so moved by this book and cannot recommend it highly enough for any devotee of Maharishi, TM or even a practitioner of Buddhist Mindfulness, for there is something for all in this book that is sure to enrich your life and spiritual practice.

Mr. Mason flushes out the background out of which Maharishi and his teachingsemerged. You observe how Maharishi developed and modified his presentation of TranscendentalMeditation. It' refreshing and inspirational to hear how clearly the spiritual aspects of theteachings were presented and embraced in the early phase of Maharishi's mission. If you have any interest in the spiritual side of TM don't pass this book by. The detailsMr. Mason's research turn up are truly amazing. This could be part of a larger book wemight title, "Everything you wanted to know about Transcendental Meditation but we'reafraid to ask."

By one of the many Paul Mason has once again given us a wonderfully objective account of yet another aspect of Mahesh and this time the emergence of TM. It would appear from Paul’s objective study of this fascinating subject that Mahesh was a sincere devotee of his teacher, but bringing the East to the West proved far more formidable than Mahesh may have anticipated! In India of the 40s and 50s, as perhaps is still the case today, there was no such concept as a difference, let alone separation, of church and state — one of the West’s pillars of the social norm. It seems doubtful that in the early days of Mahesh’s self-imposed “mission” he could tell the difference between religious and secular teaching. This is my estimation of what happened given the very clear facts Paul presents — Mahesh was at pains to transform his (to us) religious understanding into what must have seemed to him and possibly his Hindu counterparts like a profane, even sacrilegious watering down of the precious teachings of the tradition to which he had committed himself so many years earlier.Hence, we might easily suspect TM of being a religion, a religious teaching in our Western way of thinking. That Mahesh endeavored to mask or translate this into the language of Western materialism does not, I think, succeed in disguising his objective of bringing the spirituality of his teacher to the West.Only time can determine the nature of Mahesh's success or failure as the West and East continue to change in both separate and convergent ways.

I am Blood Type A and the appropriate food for Blood Type A people are vegetables and fruits. Consequently, this recipe book is so me. The recipes are easy to make, you can really try it for yourself. It is actually hard to switch from all kind of food to just veggies and fruits. However, this book provides tasty recipe that can make you forget that you're eating "bland" food. Personally, I love the last recipe "One Pound Cake". It proves that you can still enjoy the food even its veggies.

For example if I want to proceed directly to specific recipe then I just click the title in the table of contents. I hope the author would consider this suggestion. The recipes inside are really great and delicious other that that the instructions are easy to follow. Fruits and vegetable are always a healthy food compare to any other food.

By John Estes I am not a vegetarian but I have been thinking about taking meat out of my diet to help with my weight. These recipes look absolutely delicious. The book was very informative on what to use and with great detail to let you know step by step on what to use to make it with perfection. I liked that you can still get protein without having meat in your diet. I would recommend this book to all vegetarians!
