A sizzling thriller for fans of James Patterson and Patricia Cornwell—an exciting tour into the real-life world of cops, crime, drugs, and murder. But Mia had the kind of beauty that could make a grown man contemplate leaving his wife, his job, and his kids. After a passionate night together, Mia is found murdered—and Jack is the lead suspect. Facing threats from the LAPD, the 18th Street Angels, and a Colombian drug cartel, Jack delves deeper into the seedy world of drug dealers and murderers and discovers that the top players knew Mia personally. The description had convinced me it was my type of thriller. Well, let me tell you: I didn't only like it; I loved it! "The Devil's Necktie" is a well-written novel, with just the right amount of suspense, violence, realism, and twists and turns to keep you glued to the pages. But what I liked most was that I could see the action unfold like a movie, which completely disconnected me from the outside world, and took me right beside the characters.Jack Bertolino is a retired inspector who is trying to live a normal, peaceful life, away from the world of cops, criminals and drug dealers. When a confidential informant whom he worked with before calls him and tells him they need to talk, Jack has a feeling that his new-found peace won't last for long. After all, Mia is one of the most beautiful and intelligent women he's ever met, so how could he refuse to see her? After he spends the night with her, he finds out that she is in need of protection. Unfortunately, he has no idea how bad it is, and he leaves her alone in the house only to find her dead half an hour later. To make things worse, he becomes the prime suspect.Jack is a very likeable character. He thinks and acts fast, he is always one step ahead, and he is determined to find the one responsible for Mia's death. It was also nice to see him as a father who is trying to spend more time with his teenage son now that he is retired. He is proud of Chris, and the relationship they have is quite special. All these aspects make Jack a realistic and complex character that readers will easily relate to.Another thing that I liked was how the story is written from different points of view. It was interesting to see the facts through the dealers' eyes. Don't worry, this won't help you solve the case faster. The author has a great talent when it comes to building up the suspense and structuring the narratives in such a way that everything makes perfect sense at the end. If you like crime novels, you will love "The Devil's Necktie", trust me. It will take you by surprise.

In Crime Noir, you want to encounter layered scenes, crisp pacing, bad guys you want to see brought to rough justice and a lead character who is complex and sympathetic and tough all at the same time. Well, look no farther than The Devil's Necktie to get generous helpings of all-of-the-above. John Lansing is clearly a writer who knows and enjoys this domain, and his latest will grab you from the get-go. His is a unique and singular voice in a genre that is well represented, to say the least. Carve out some time and take this ride. You're in good hands.

It's the first book that I've bought and read on my iPad Kindle app. Also, I rarely read fiction books. I primarily read non-fiction. Somewhere in my early years I must have picked up the belief that reading was solely for learning. Oops, so wrong. I actually had a discussion with a friend of mine. He said that fiction was a great escape from the stresses of everyday life, and he suggested that I read, "The Devil's Necktie." And that's where my addiction to fiction began.I loved reading, "The "Devil's Necktie." It's a refreshing escape, an energizing brain break. The book provides a wonderful mix of elements in one package -- sex, humor, mystery, cops, crime, cars, drugs, gangs -- you name it. So sly, Lansing had me hooked and cleverly reeled me in successively at every page. The dialogue was snappy and flowed well. In particular, I enjoyed and grinned at the funny parts -- little dry, witty zingers. As a writer, John Lansing knows how to paint images with words in a unique and very refreshing way. The book is a highly entertaining read. It just yanked me in. I was fascinated with the main character, Jack Bertolino. No doubt, "The Devil's Necktie," is the cause of my new addition to fiction.
