I was happy to find the author recommends natural remedies and I can attest they do work. Since I have started juicing raw fruits and vegetables and drinking aloe vera juice, my painful digestive symptoms have disappeared. If you suffer from GERD then you need this book!

The Psychology of Houses By Lucille Lang Day The Little House on Stilts Remembers is a remarkable book in which Naomi Ruth Lowinsky reveals the personalities of houses, including ones where she has lived, her family ancestral home that was lost to the Nazis, and the home where her grandsons are growing up. One house lets in the rain, another offers persimmons from its garden, and yet another has a fairy tale name. Most importantly, Lowinsky shows that our houses live inside us, just as we live inside our houses (“You and I/are inside one another,” one house explains), and that our houses offer views of the world that shape us psychologically (“Haven’t I shown you/the setting sun streaked/purple and orange/while white fog like sea foam/flows over the western hills?”), just as we fill them with “clay goddesses,” “silver fish knives,” “Indian shawls” and “toy trains.” The Little House on Stilts Remembers is a rich and rewarding read.

Henderson I picked up the book and had a hard time putting it back down. Kevin's writes with raw honesty about the struggle of addiction and surrendering to something greater than the "thousand screaming monkeys" that rarely rest. Reading this book stirred an uncomfortable recognition of my own monkeys which, ironically, helped me to feel hopeful. Hopeful about taming my own internal committee who's constant chatter have had the power to lead me down a road in direct opposition to supporting my highest good. Buy it. Read it. Share it.

An Inspiring Journey By Audrey A Thousand Screaming Monkeys is a book that needed to be written as it provides a raw, gritty and rare look into the world of addiction. Seldom do we get to understand the torment and heavy toll that addiction & alcoholism takes on not only the addict, but also on those who love the addict. What does one do with all of that? Kevin takes us from the depths of utter despair to a place of surrender, self-compassion and redemption. There are so many teachable moments in this book, so many words to live by. Kevin's shift from a fractured, disconnected human to a vulnerable, searching man seeking meaning in the mundane, will inspire anyone who has ever felt challenged to break free from a difficult aspect of life. It's so important to be able to see the delicate process that takes place when surrender is the only thing left, other than physical death, and through Kevin's poignant story we are left with a message of hope for a meaningful life. We are inspired to believe that anything is possible even in the face of incredible odds. By kira lynch I just finished reading this book and it left me feeling such gratitude for the gift of sobriety. Kevin's story so clearly illustrates the destruction that addiction can cause in peoples lives and the miracles that occur when the willingness to recover is tapped into. Kevin's ability to share the lessons he learned and the wisdom gained as he progressed through the early stages of recovery make this book a helpful guide for those seeking freedom from living a life in the frequency of addiction. I plan to share this book with people who enter my life and need to build hope that recovery is possible.

About the Author Colleen Saidman Yee is an internationally respected yoga teacher who has been teaching since 1999. I watch women’s chests. I watch the arches of their feet. I watch the positions of their pelvises and the placement of their heads. I also watch women’s perfection, courage, compassion, and grace. We women can balance our heads over our lifted chests, supported by strong legs that are connected to the earth. We can raise the arches of our feet and we can soften our faces. We can carry ourselves in the world with confidence and ease. I’ve taught yoga to thousands of women (and men) for close to two decades. Women are powerful and beautiful, and we are also in pain—physical, emotional, and psychological—stemming from past or present trauma. We’re fearful about what the future may or may not bring, personally or professionally. Women in my classes cope with addiction, body and relationship issues, mother issues, competitiveness, and an inability to tell the truth. All of these things create stagnation and tension in the body. Yoga gives us tools to overcome the obstacles that exist between us and freedom, joy, and gratitude. I see why women come to yoga; they want to reclaim something in themselves. It’s inspiring to watch women gain a different perspective and fall in love with their bodies. I was a professional model for three decades and very confused about my value beyond my looks. I’ve experienced triumphs in life, but plenty of traumas, too. I’ve always been searching for something beyond what I can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. I’ve had glimpses of this mystery through prayer, intense exercise, and drugs. Yet it is yoga that takes me back to myself and has made me realize that the magic that I’ve spent my lifetime searching for is right here inside of me. All I have to do is stop running from it. My yoga journey started in 1987 when a friend convinced me to go with her to a yoga class in New York City. When I walked out, I felt different than I’d ever felt in my life. As I stepped into the street and its lights, colors, and smells—all seemed different, so crisp and so clear. Something significant had shifted, and something opened up inside of me. I felt alive in a whole new way. I love this definition of yoga from one of my first teachers, Sharon Gannon: “Yoga is the state where nothing is missing.” When was the last time we felt nothing was missing? Maybe in utero. The term satya means “truthfulness” in Sanskrit. So many of us are lying to ourselves; we’re putting an identity out there that we want other people to see, and we’re hiding, from ourselves and from others, who we truly are. In truthfulness as in yoga, nothing is missing. We are present, whole. Even after all my years of practice and study, I can’t claim to know what enlightenment is, or if yoga will take me there. But I do know that yoga lowers stress, improves posture, circulation, and digestion, while keeping joints fluid and muscles toned. It may also be the best antiaging regimen we have, and it can bring us to our ideal weight. Yoga eases everyday pains and frustrations and increases kindness and compassion. It hones the body and stabilizes the mind. Yoga can illuminate our spirits and free us from the shackles of our stories, which often limit our vision of who we are and what we are capable of achieving. When you navigate the inner landscapes of your body through breath work, mindfulness, and postures, you notice if what you have just said, done, or thought makes you feel lousy or good. One day several years ago, my four-year-old nephew, Johnny, was talking to my oldest brother, Mark. Johnny said, “Uncle Mark, I really love everyone!” Mark replied: “Really, Johnny? I don’t love everyone. In fact, I even have enemies.” Johnny shook his head and said, “That’s too bad, Uncle Mark. You must feel so bad inside.” This awareness is the first step toward right thought, right word, right action, and maybe even peace. It could be that simple. One night, my husband, Rodney, and I were surfing YouTube videos when we stumbled on a video of a Fiona Apple concert. It was an “aha!” moment for me. I thought: This woman is telling the truth with her body. She’s not what you would typically call a good dancer, she was jerky and unconcerned about looking pretty, but something about her was raw and real. She was moving with her wounds, with her limitations—she was moving truthfully. She wasn’t hiding, and she wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable and expose herself through her voice and movements. Her courage and honesty made her dance mesmerizing and powerful. It penetrated something deep inside me. When you bow to someone and say, “Namaste,” it means, “The deepest part of me acknowledges the deepest part of you.” Fiona Apple’s performance was a Namaste from her body to mine. I want to have the courage to be as honest in my life, my teaching, and in this book as she was in that dance. Yoga can bring you to this kind of truth by helping you to observe, then to let go of, the habits you cling to and the stories you use to protect yourself. As you practice, you become intimate with your body, which many of us spend a lifetime either alienated from or waging war with. Yoga practice can pierce emotional places that most of us guard or avoid. Our bodies are intelligent, more a source of direct truth than our minds, but we rarely listen to the wisdom that’s buried in our beautiful chambers. I became a yoga teacher because I have experienced the real change yoga can create. With yoga, I’m at home in my skin. Yoga has helped me to become more honest. It has helped me discover my body, and through it, my voice. In the modern yoga world, yogis were often put into little boxes and expected to be celibate, or cult members, or tree-hugging, granola-eating hippies. I’m here to tell you that today a yogi can be anyone, even an Irish Italian girl from the heartland of Indiana. Yoga has given me a larger family, my yoga community, a congregation of people willing to work to find the connectivity that’s sometimes hidden. It brings to the surface what we need to feel and know. The late B. K. S. Iyengar, perhaps the most influential yoga teacher of our age, said that you can only be as intimate with others as you are with yourself. Alone and in community, we use yoga to get to our essence. Yoga peels away layer after layer of debris to uncover what has been there all along. It’s like the Bob Dylan lyric: “How long, babe, will you search for what’s not lost?” This is the story of one woman’s life, my life, in and out of yoga. It isn’t always pretty, but it’s as honest as I can be, and as memory allows. I’ve tried to extract from my journey some of the painful and exuberant lessons I’ve learned, and I’ve embodied each of them in a unique yoga sequence. For dealing with suffering, the sequences are intended to be soothing and nurturing; for dealing with growth and other life passages, the sequences are intended to be celebratory and to lead you to your own insights. The sequences I’ve designed address issues of alienation, addiction, and insecurity as well as finding one’s voice and participating in the endless potential of acceptance and love. The goal of a yoga sequence is to create a physical effect, an emotional effect, and a spiritual effect. The key is to investigate and listen to your body, to increase intimacy with it in order to understand cause and effect. What sequence of poses, breath work, and meditation creates greater peace? (Not just peace in our joints, but peace in our guts, our hearts, our nervous systems, and our lives.) We’re all “sequencing” every day. If you need to drop the kids off at school and go to the bank, the post office, and the grocery store, you figure out an optimal order in which to complete those tasks. When it comes to the body, the same lessons apply. Yoga is skill in action; part of that skill is learning the right sequence, on and off the mat. A beautiful yoga playground awaits you in these pages, and, I hope, the sequences I’ve created will reveal the blue sky that’s waiting inside you. Today, I’m fifty-five years old and happily married. I don’t do drugs, and I’m a vegetarian. Instead of chasing synthetic highs, I’ve learned how to extract a high from the beauty of an ordinary day. I’ve learned that the best high exists in the joy or the sadness or the mundaneness of the present moment, unfiltered. Yoga allows me to surf the ripples and sit with the mud, all while catching glimpses of the clarity at the bottom of the lake: my true Self. I hope this book will help you do the same. Namaste.

I was unable to put it down and finished it in one day. It made me laugh. It made me cry. It made me reassess and think. I will refer to this book over and over, as I practice my poses and as I practice at this thing called life. It turns out that we are all '"enough," and can make a difference in each other's lives by being present for them and in our service work that meets the needs of those who may need our touch, both physically and spiritually. Reading this book has changed my life. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

By Laura Sheldon I got Colleen's book on Saturday, started reading it on Sunday (couldn't put it down) and finished it this am (Monday) !!! I absolutely loved it and it truly inspired me in so many ways!! How beautiful, raw and honest her words were and all a long yoga revealing (in her words) the blue sky that was waiting inside of her. It had me laughing, crying and rethinking my life. I love her dedication to her own journey with yoga and her courage to share all the good and bad of her life in this book. She just empowers us all through yoga (and certain yoga poses through out all the chapters) to help with stress, grief, addiction,forgiveness etc. Wow what an incredible journey I felt I was just on!! Excellent read!!!!!

By Toughest Critic in the Room I can relate to this book in so many ways. I found yoga after struggling with a severe drug addiction at the age of 18. My first class was in a rehab facility in Arizona. I didn't know it then but yoga would totally change my life in ways i never thought imaginable and so would Colleen's teachings and words in her book. I remember being in Warrior 3 for the first time back then, ten years ago, and thinking "Wow, this is amazing." I didn't get sober that time around but when i turned 21, i did. I immediately gravitated back to yoga upon getting out of a 30-day treatment program in Minnesota. I clung to my mat, like a life preserver. I did terrible gym yoga where i loaded the hello out of my hips and was often so sore the next day i couldn't walk. It wasn't the yoga i know and love today but it was what i had to work with, and i loved it. I walked through the doors of Corepower Yoga daily and got onto my mat. I had no money and cleaned sweaty mats for free yoga, that's how bad i wanted it, needed it.Later I got certified and became a teacher. I did Colleen's whole Gaiam yoga club as well as all of her DVD's, i learned so much about sequencing and the postures, what it meant to be an educated teacher, what it meant to heal instead of hurt the body through movement. When Yoga For Life came into being i thought FINALLY, a yoga book by a teacher who is fresh, interesting, sexy, smart and so full of life! Learning about Colleen's childhood and how it shaped her yoga journey is fascinating. Her relationships (some of which failed) taught her so much about who she is! Reading about her divorces made me realize that sometimes relationships end for the better, they end to teach us something about ourselves weather we want to know it or not, and that is just one lesson i learned from one chapter. Her journey from drug addict to model to yoga teacher to mother to wife has pieces that everybody will be able to relate to in one way or another. If ever a sad story had a happy ending it's this one. Her own drive, perseverance and a bit of god's grace brought this woman to her knees and then re-taught her to stand on her own two feet as an adult again and again. I would say it's a true must read, as long as there's blood running through your veins, you'll be able to relate to, learn from and love Colleen's story.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Nice primer giving the basics of Scandinavian ingredients (and cooking) By Jackal This is a nice book about Scandinavian food ingredients. It is organised by ingredients and is written for people lacking familiarity with the cuisine. Since the author is focusing on ingredients it makes sense to lump the Scandinavian countries together. If the focus were on cooking, this choice would be less obvious. In addition, you get 1-2 classic dishes per ingredient. The small number of recipes is probably the biggest drawback. (But take a look at the book's title. It is not about actually cooking.) The book also contains sections on buying and practical tips relating to the ingredients. This is less relevant for an audience outside the Scandinavian countries. Some of the ingredient discussion is very specific (e.g. the local fish), which leads me to believe that the book is a translation.If you want a book on Scandinavian ingredients and cooking, this is a great book. If you want a comprehensive cookbook or anything more advanced than a primer this book is not for you. The book would make a perfect gift to somebody that is food interested (nice print, good binding and paper, in addition to its content). It is vastly superior to The Scandinavian Cookbook.

It describes much about the food and traditions surrounding Scandinavian eating traditions. There is a great deal of detail about such subjects as; eggs, saltwater fish, ham, peas, the history appearance, taste, culinary uses. There are notes and explanations for each recipe. Many can be made with easily found ingredients, however there are also quite a few with harder to find , such as kalvdan - the first lactation after a cow has calved.Included are eggs and dairy, fresh fish and shellfish, preserved fish, poultry, meat, game and offal, vegetables, mushrooms, herbs, fruit, berries, breads and grains and festive food.Be aware that there is not much variety in vegetables or fruit. Pictures are not always clear on which recipe they are illustrating and some recipes have the ingredients listed within the recipe instead of listed , as is usually done before the recipe directions.You can learn how to smoke your own fish and have some adventurous cooking experiences. However, even with a family that has broad tastes, there were few recipes that mine would tolerate since so many have chervil or rye included. Lutefisk was a failure but the sun eggs were a hit.This would be a cookbook for those wishing to try something new to add to their cookbook collection and learn something about Scandinavian cooking.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. simple, minimalist recipes and beautiful photographs of scandinavian food and places By naturegirl this is a very nice book with very beautifully taken, artful photos (like something you might find on a coffee table) and simple, fresh recipes with minimalist ingredients that are often not cooked, but assembled fresh, or cured in some traditional (but no-fuss) way. the book's emphasis is on fresh herbs, which I appreciate. some recipes do require special items, often gathered, (mostly just specific types of berries and such) that are not easily found in the states, but that is usually the case with authentic Scandinavian food, and substitutions are easily worked out when all else fails (and creative cooking is not about following rules anyway). I purchased this book to replace a copy that disappeared at the library, but decided to keep it for myself, as I had enjoyed the library copy so much that I had checked it out a couple of times. I may purchase a second copy when the price falls again for the library that owned it, so other folks might enjoy it, as I did. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys healthy, no fuss meal prep with fresh, vibrant ingredients that take you on a mental journey.

Leptin is a little molecule, a hormone actually, that is responsible for controlling fat storage in our bodies. It controls which nutrients get stored as fat, and which are going to be directly used for energy. In obese people, leptin is usually in short supply, so their bodies need a nudge to produce the correct levels. Studies have shown that this "nudge" can be provided by 5 basic things: Not eating after an early dinner. (Eating late causes almost every calorie consumed to be stored as fat.) Eating 3 meals a day without snacking in between. The idea is to maintain 3-6 hours between meals without having other food as well. We often perceive thirst in between meals as hunger, so rather than snack, drink plenty of water. Don't eat big meals. It's a misconception that people in Mediterranean regions eat huge dishes full of pasta and meat, with big wedges of bread on the side, along with bottle after bottle of red wine. In truth, they have several small dishes, consisting mainly of fruit and vegetables with some legumes, and small amounts of meat as flavoring, with a glass of wine. But more about that just now. If our bodies are fed large amounts of food in one go, we can be sure that some of it will be stored as fat. Large meals interfere with the production of leptins by our bodies. Eat a protein-rich breakfast, focusing on breakfast as the main meal of the day, rather than dinner. There's an old saying that has some wisdom, "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a peasant, and supper like a pauper." So, you'll find our breakfast recipes here are full of good proteins like lean ham, eggs, feta cheese, chicken breast, and lean beef. Try them, and you'll eliminate those mid-morning hunger pangs. Reduce (don't eliminate) the amount of carbohydrates eaten. Our bodies are designed to crave them for times of survival, in order to increase fat reserves, which is exactly what we don't need in these times of relative abundance. Rather fill up on fruits, vegetables, cottage cheese, yoghurts, or make some delicious healthy soups from our soup chapter.’That is Emily’s style and what follows is a recipe book of foods that are not only RIGHT for us but also some of the most delicious treats you can imagine. So several of the prior reviewers have said this content is a re-write of something else. In most URBAN reads the plots and storylines are similar. This 2nd installment is just so wacked out and Not even realistic. I understand that writers based on the first book decide that another book is warranted, This Installment should have stopped. A cliffhanger REALLY Melissa. The characters are toooo many, too much messiness for it to continue. Raheem should have been caught or killed, these so called MEN / Gangsters are children with no focus other than getting some, and these women that are in or being introduced, should not even come into the storyline. Do these such thirsty women exist over some DICK?? Please give Angie Tameka some COMMON SENSE, (which is not so common). I am NOT looking forward to the next installment because this should have ended now. MELISSA please come up with some sort of plausible or believable OR EVEN REALISTIC ending for this series, CUZ THIS SHOULD ALL END ON A NOTE.

About the Author Robert L. Trestman is a Professor of Medicine, Psychiatry and Nursing at UCONN, and heads UConn Health Correctional Managed Health Care. He received his PhD in Psychology and MD from the University of Tennessee, and trained in psychiatry and neurobiology at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Trestman has studied the neurobiology and treatment of people with severe mood and personality disorders, and conducts translational research on correctional health. He has published widely, consults to the NIMH, SAMHSA, DOJ and the Vera Institute of Justice, and is Board Chairman of the Child Health and Development Institute. Kenneth Appelbaum is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Correctional Mental Health Policy and Research in Commonwealth Medicine (CWM), the health care consulting division of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. From 1998 - 2007 he served as Director of Mental Health for the CWM correctional health program with responsibility for mental health services provided to all inmates in Massachusetts Department of Correction facilities, including Bridgewater State Hospital. He currently provides consultations on staffing, programming, policy, and safety for state and federal mental health and prison mental health systems. His academic interests in correctional mental health include epidemiology, service delivery models, administrative and clinical policies, self-injurious behaviors, and treatment of serious mental disorders. Jeffrey L. Metzner received his M.D. from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1975 and completed his psychiatric residency at the University of Colorado's Department of Psychiatry during 1979. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, Colorado, where he is also Associate Director of the forensic fellowship program. Dr. Metzner has written extensively on the psychiatric care of prison populations. He has provided consultation to judges, special masters, monitors, state departments of corrections, city and county jails, U.S. Department of Justice, the National Prison Project, and others involved in the field of correctional psychiatry in over 36 states.

I've read four books in the last 36 hours and I swear they all start to blur together {same plot line just a different title). I'm happy to say this book was very good. It held my interest and I didn't roll my eyes in up in my head wanting it to be over. A couple of things I took issue with but I let them go and enjoyed the ride. One being, after a year Taylor didn't know Yohance was married! Please, if nothing else her father would have told her. Two, nobody figured out that Ky'mani was behind the set up her father or Jules? In any case, will read part 2 when it's released.

This book has drama, cheating, disloyalty, homicides and more. Everything you want from a urban fiction street lit. I can't wait for part 2

The relationship with Yohance and Taylor was so good, can't believe that ending. I know what really happened at the gas station...can't wait for part two. Don't sleep on this book, one click now.
