There are many good uses for Apple Cider Vinegar, including ones that I did not already know, like reducing bedwetting in children and as a mood enhancer. Definitely going to incorporate more Apple Cider Vinegar in my diet. The only comment that I have is that I wish the author put the relevant scientific references at the end of each benefit paragraph and not just all at the end.

Winters I always knew that Apple Cider Vinegar had a lot of positive benefits, but I never saw so many useful tips packed into one eBook. I originally downloaded Trainor’s “The Apple Cider Vinegar Book,” because I’m all about alternative medicine, natural home remedies, and holistic healing…have been for years. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the thoroughness of the book, as I have read other eBooks on natural healing and holistic approaches that were either too brief or simply loaded with poor information. That’s not the case with Trainor’s book, as I discovered the minute I loaded the book onto my Kindle device.Suffering from a Liver disease myself, I was mostly interested in the use of Apple Cider Vinegar to detoxify the liver, and to see what kind of healing the use of vinegar could provide. I couldn’t believe that the treatment regimen was something as simple as a teaspoon of the Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in warm water ten minutes before each meal. What I really found excellent about “The Apple Cider Vinegar Book,” is that the book doesn’t just tout vinegar as the cure-all to every ailment, it also points out some of the cons associated with its use and how to avoid negative side effects. I was also pleased how the author included a warning for diabetics: Having diabetes myself, the warning was definitely something I needed to know about. I didn’t know that the vinegar could actually lower glucose levels!I like how the book is laid out. The eBook has easy to view text and illustrations throughout, and the vast topics covered as well as all the well-researched information, really made the book a worthy read.“The Apple Cider Vinegar Book,” features information on apple cider vinegar recipes, antioxidants & phytochemicals, hair treatments, skin care uses and more. It’s an easy read to explore all of the apple cider vinegar benefits you can derive from its use and to even discover apple cider vinegar for weight loss solutions. I couldn’t tell you how much I appreciated the holistic, free, and easy to use herbal remedies served up in Trainer’s eBook. For instance, I never knew apple cider vinegar makes a terrific hair treatment for split ends, or that it can reduce dandruff as well. Finally, I have to say I love the fact that the eBook has enabled text to speech conversion, so I can use my kindle tools to have the book read to me as I read along. I also like the fact that there are references listed in the citations section of the work, and, therefore, lends additional insight as to how well the book has researched, and offers a resource hinting at additional reading in relation to the use of Apple Cider Vinegar.Because the text to speech is enabled, it allows for ease of readability. Other than that, the user-friendliness of the eBook design is exceptional, and the reading is smooth, and light. I highly recommend the body of work. I think the one think lacking that I prefer in a book is an index listing in order to make things easier to find based word searches, even though you can use the built in search tool on the Kindle to search for terms. Just old fashioned I guess.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Experience Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits! By Laura Buell The Apple Cider Vinegar Book offers 101 ways for readers to improve their health and well-being with a simple household ingredient: apple cider vinegar (ACV). This book shows how to boost your immune system, improve the health of your skin and hair, and cure minor ailments without spending money on expensive over-the-counter remedies or making an unnecessary trip to the doctor’s office. This book also goes into depth about the way antioxidants and phytochemicals affect the body as well as how vitamins and supplements work within it.I like how this book uses alternative medicine to alleviate common problems. It’s written in a way that’s often humorous and doesn’t require one to have a scientific background to understand the uses of ACV. I came away from this book having a better understanding of how my body works and for what symptoms I need to watch as I continue to age. This is a book I will definitely keep for reference when an ailment strikes and I need healing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I loved this summary By Gauri Yardi I loved this summary. It took me about an hour to read and I learned SO much. I'm a small business owner so I'm very short on time. Summaries like this are ideal ways for me to engage with books that will help me develop professionally and personally.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tons of learning in just an hour of reading By Tim T Super-focused summary that is packed with actionable material. Held my interest from beginning to end because there was no fluff or anything nonessential, and the writing style is clear and engaging. It's short enough that you can easily skim it once to get a high level overview and then read it a second time more carefully to let the details sink in. Also definitely will keep this on my Kindle as something I can refer back to when I need a refresher on the lessons I learned here. Can't wait to read more in this series.

Took me just under two hours to read. Will likely re-read in the future (one of the benefits of this format / length) and would highly recommend!

Want to lose weight, lower blood pressure and feel great?

Doctors all around the country, including ‘The American Heart Association’ and ‘The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’, endorse the DASH diet. The DASH diet has even been ranked as #1 for 5 years in a row by the US News and World Report.

So what is the DASH diet?

The DASH diet is a diet that is all about lowering sodium and eating delicious lean meats, fruits, vegetables, fish, dairy and healthy fats. These foods are all high in nutrients and will control your weight and blood pressure.

Why Slow Cooking?

The low temperature of the slow cooker aids tremendously in the kitchen. People often over cook their vegetables and much of the nutrients in the food are burned away. With slow cooking the food retains its nutrients and is cooked uniformly. Additionally, slow cooking is prefect for people on the go. Most of the recipes require just 20 minutes or under of preparation. Do this at night and have breakfast waiting for you! Do this in the morning and have dinner ready when you get home!

We don't understand that our body is constantly rebuilding and changing. And all body "bricks" are taking out of food. So our body consists of the things we eat. The diet is an extremely important thing. Some diseases are caused with lack or excess of substances that are present in our diet. Dash diet is a well-balanced combination of recipes that is recommended by lots of considerable organizations all over the world. It will help you not only to reduce weight. You will lower cholesterol and inflammation. The risk of heart disease and diabetes also will be reduced. This books contains not just some recipes. It is a real week plan that will help you to improve the health. I liked this book very much.

This book will go to my collection of cookbooks . The author has focused on importance of dash diet and then went on with the idea usage of slow cooker. Well I believe that most of the diet cookbooks work, only the individuals don't work that is why they can't see the change.

The Illustrative Chef: 30 Illustrated Recipes (TDAC Single Artist Series) (Volume 5), by Liv Wan

About the Author Growing up in Taiwan I have lots of great food memories. Many members of my family are wonderful cooks—some are chefs—and from a really young age I’ve always been surrounded by delicious food. Some of my very happiest memories are of watching my grandparents cook and of my father taking me to the most unique restaurants and night markets to find the best food. Even though I’m from Taiwan, my culinary background isn’t entirely about Eastern food. I was a chef for many years and my culinary education focused on Western style cooking. Of course, I do know a lot about Eastern food! I have always been very adventurous when it comes to food and this has a large influence on not only my cooking but also my food illustrations. Since 2009 I have ran my own food blog for both Chinese and Taiwanese food. In 2012 my daughter was born and, unwilling to work the long high-pressure hours associated with being a chef, I decided to make a huge career change and pursue my other passion: illustration.

Reunion with the king turns forbidden…and dangerous

Internationally renowned actress Juliana Richardson should be concentrating on the role of a lifetime, not on the man who broke her heart years earlier. Yet King Andre Alexei IV is no longer a young prince-in-training—he's an undeniably sexy monarch with seduction on his mind. Juliana's heart is at risk, but after a series of deadly coincidences, it becomes clear her life is on the line, too.

Andre vows to protect the stubborn star even as she pushes him away. But as the threat to Juliana's life grows more intense, Andre must choose between saving the vulnerable beauty or letting her go forever…

King Andre Alexei IV of Zakhar, heir to a long line of imperious kings, absolute monarch in a world where absolute monarchs were extremely few, was royally pissed. He fixed his steely gaze on the master of the household and said in a soft voice that didn't fool anyone who heard it, "I thought I made myself perfectly clear with regard to the arrangements.""Yes, Sire, you did," the man acknowledged stiffly. "But—""But what?""But the state apartments have always been reserved for immediate family or for visiting royalty." There was just a hint of outrage in his voice. "Since your mother's death, Your Majesty, no one has occupied the Queen's Suite except the Queen of England when she was here for your coronation three years ago. I had the maids prepare the suite formerly occupied by Princess Mara for Miss Richardson instead. It will be familiar to her, and I am sure she will be very happy th—""If the Queen's Suite is not ready to be occupied when Miss Richardson arrives, I will know the reason why." Andre's voice was even softer, and the elderly man in front of him quaked at the veiled threat in face and voice. The king was a gentleman as a general rule—kind, courteous and a wonderful employer to work for. Reasonable, too. But there was no doubt who ruled Zakhar—or this household. When he gave a direct order he expected it to be obeyed. Instantly. Not even forty years of faithful service would count when he looked and sounded this way.Suddenly the king smiled. "Vladimir, old friend," he coaxed. "You have known me all my life. I learned court protocol at your knee. And many times you shielded Mara from my father's wrath—do you think I could forget that?" His smile faded. "But this is important to me. You cannot know how important. I realize it is a breach of state protocol, but do not fail me in this, old friend. Miss Richardson will be portraying Queen Eleonora in the film. I wish her to be treated as such, and not just in this way. In every way. She will be housed in the Queen's Suite."Andre turned sharply and strode away before he betrayed himself any further. He'd worked tirelessly for this day for almost three years, ever since he ascended the throne. Now he would risk his future on one roll of the dice. But he wanted everything perfect beforehand. Everything that could be done to set the stage would be done. Then…if he lost…if he failed…he would have no one to blame except himself. He'd been up since dawn, unable to sleep, knowing that in mere hours she would be here. Knowing that somewhere in the skies over the Atlantic Ocean, then over Europe, his men were closely guarding—albeit without her knowledge—the one woman for whom this entire endeavor had been undertaken. The woman for whom he'd paid the modern-day equivalent of a king's ransom to ensure she would finally return to Zakhar.Juliana.Even her name had the power to move him in ways he'd fought for years. Her memory burned white hot in his mind and his body. How many times had he cursed himself that he couldn't change his constant nature? How many times had he wished he was not a Mari-anescu? And how many times had he argued in his mind with the first Andre Alexei, only to hear the inevitable answer he did not want to hear, the same answer his namesake had implacably given to the church, to his Privy Council, to his subjects—it is her…or no one.Forever and a day. Most of the cast and crew of King's Ransom were already here and had been for several weeks: shooting exterior shots, scoping out the palace—especially the older wings—planning camera angles, testing lighting schemes and doing all the thousand and one things that went into making a blockbuster feature film. But the leads, the actor and actress who would portray the first King Andre Alexei and his beloved Queen Eleonora— Dirk DeWinter and Juliana Richardson—were arriving later this morning. And the grand, formal reception for the entire cast and crew was set for tonight in the Great Hall.Restless energy pulsed through his body, and Andre strode into the impressive Great Hall, with its massive mahogany pillars, three-story arched ceiling festooned with a grandiose display of gold inlay, and thick red-and-gold rug so immense it covered nearly the entire expanse of the floor.Maids, footmen and equerries were hard at work preparing the room for the guests who would be there tonight. Banks of flowers and potted trees were being installed around the room, not just from the royal gardens but from professional nurseries in Drago and beyond, bringing the sweet freshness of the outdoors inside. The dust covers swathing the chandeliers had been removed, and in the morning light each prism sparkled and glittered, casting rainbow hues around the room. Tonight they would be even more dazzling.Satisfied at the progress, Andre passed through the Great Hall to the Grand Staircase that led into it. He ignored the gilded, ornate railing and took the wide marble stairs to the second floor of the palace two at a time, his feet making no sound on the crimson carpet runner. Damon, Andre's personal bodyguard on duty today, followed him, scrambling to keep up.His father had chosen his bodyguards when he was the Crown Prince. But once he ascended the throne he'd recruited his cousin Zax to head up the security force protecting him and had handpicked his bodyguards himself, men from his own unit in the Zakharian National Forces, men he'd trained with. Men he could trust with his life, who were also discreet.Captains Damon Kostya and Lukas Branko were two of those men detached from the military to serve in the contingent guarding him. Damon was on duty today and Lukas would be on duty tonight during the reception. They were nearly fanatical in their devotion to him, to keeping him alive, sworn to protect him at all costs. As were all the men on his bodyguard detail. And they'd done a damned fine job so far through two assassination attempts in the past three years.Normally Andre was considerate of his bodyguards, careful to make no sudden, unexpected moves that would take whomever was on duty by surprise. It wasn't his habit to make things more difficult for the men guarding him. But not today. He burst through the door to his suite of rooms, then turned abruptly. "Wait outside, Damon.""But, Sire…" Damon obviously didn't like the idea of leaving his king unprotected, even in these relatively safe confines, but he acquiesced under the imperious expression on the face Andre turned on him. "Yes, Sire." Even though Damon had agreed, the king knew he would station himself right outside the door, within earshot. And he would fume and fret the entire time Andre was out of his sight.Andre's elderly English valet was in the dressing room, humming to himself as he hung up on a stand the white gold-braided dress uniform the king would wear at the reception tonight. Brushing away a fleck of lint. Testing each button for a loose thread. Inspecting the belt, gold-handled sword and scabbard, ensuring the leather was polished to a high gloss and that there wasn't a spot of tarnish or a finger smudge on the steel. Checking everything twice so the king would be no less than perfect when he left his valet's hands. Normally Andre was amused at the way Sinclair fussed over his clothes, although he never let the other man fuss over him. But today wasn't a normal day, and Andre craved solitude."Later, Sinclair," he told his valet. "Come back later."Alone finally, Andre glanced once at the large, intricately woven tapestry on one wall of the bedroom before he tore his thoughts away from it. Then he paced, reviewing every detail in his mind. As if by focusing on the minutiae he could push thoughts of Juliana to the background. As if he could quiet the eager pounding of his heart as it anticipated her arrival. Useless."Propinquity is not love," Andre's father had reminded him repeatedly through the years, as he paraded one potential bride after another in front of his son's disinterested gaze. Refusing to believe what he didn't want to believe, despite knowing—as all Zakhar knew—that Marianescus mated for life. That they loved once…then never again. Refusing to believe his son's heart had been irrevocably given at such an early age.Not propinquity, Andre told himself now. His father had been as wrong about that as he'd been wrong about everything regarding his children—especially his only son. Andre's love for Juliana had never had its roots in their close proximity, in their frequent encounters when they were younger. Eleven years without her would eventually have eradicated his love if that had been the case, but it had not. She was the other half of his soul—something he'd long since accepted, but that his father had always denied. And since Andre had despised his father for his treatment of Mara, father and son had rarely spoken except in confrontation. He'd never confided in his father that his love for Juliana burned like an eternal flame and always would—forever and a day.He impatiently pushed open the French doors and strode out onto his private balcony. The balcony was another thing Andre's bodyguards didn't like. But the risk was slight. The royal palace stood on a hill above Drago, surrounded by a high castle wall patrolled by armed guards. No buildings were in gunshot range outside the wall, and there was very little that would give any would-be assassin cover as he lay in wait. Nevertheless, to a man Andre's bodyguards begged him to have a care how often he exposed himself on the balcony without them to protect him.Andre wasn't thinking about that. He had something much more important on his mind right now, and he needed the escape the balcony brought him.Usually the sight of Drago in the early-morning light, nestled in its green valley and ringed by towering mountains, calmed him. But not today. Now he clenched his fists against the stone railing, his eyes scanning the empty skies for the plane he knew would not arrive for some time. "Come to me, Juliana," he whispered, the words he had dreamed for years but had never dared to utter aloud. Until today. "Come to me."The man picked up the newspaper, unfolded it and shook it out…then cursed. The headline blared what he'd known for weeks, so it wasn't the headline or the accompanying story that made him angry. It was the reminder that something he'd long ago thought he'd taken care of for good was coming back to haunt him, and the radiant pictures beneath the headline only added fuel to the fire of anger that surged within him."Damn you," he whispered to the photos. He knew the ostensible reason why Juliana Richardson was returning to Zakhar after all these years. But he couldn't trust that secrets long buried wouldn't somehow resurface while she was here. Couldn't trust that the truth wouldn't somehow be revealed, destroying him and everything he'd plotted and planned for the past three years. If he believed in God—which he didn't—he would almost have said God held the king in the palm of his hand, foiling the two covert attempts he'd made to remove the king from his path to greatness. But although he didn't believe in God, he did believe in the devil. And his two previous failures had recently prompted him to cut a deal with the devil himself—Aleksandrov Vishenko. The head of a particularly vicious branch of the Bratva—the Russian Mafia. But now that Juliana Richardson was returning to Zakhar, it was no longer just the king he had to worry about. Unless he could find some way to keep Juliana away from Andre, or keep Andre away from Juliana, Juliana—sweet, beautiful Juliana—would have to die. There was really no other option.Juliana put away the script she'd been studying and buckled her seat belt at the flight attendant's announcement. She glanced at Maddie Treister, her administrative assistant, sleeping peacefully in the first-class seat next to her, but since her seat belt was already fastened Juliana didn't feel the need to waken her yet. Her gaze slid across the aisle and she saw Dirk DeWinter buckling up. He'd already let his hair grow out into the shaggy length worn by men in the sixteenth century, and he'd dyed it several shades lighter than his usual brown pelt to match the paintings of the man he'd be playing in King's Ransom. He wasn't wearing the green-tinted contact lenses yet, but she knew he would. He was a stickler for authenticity, just as she was, and he would have worn them even if they hadn't been required because it would help make him "feel the part." Like him, she would wear colored contact lenses, in her case to change her eye color from violet to pale blue, but at least she hadn't had to dye her hair—the two paintings of Queen Eleonora that had survived through the years showed her with long raven tresses similar to Juliana's own.She smiled at Dirk and got his brilliant smile in return, the heart-stopping smile that had won him millions of female fans the world over. But Dirk was a man's man, too, despite his movie star looks. His appeal was universal. Men wanted to be like him on the silver screen—brave, strong, heroic and utterly irresistible to women. Women just wanted him. But at thirty-four, five years Juliana's senior, he was quietly, steadfastly faithful to his wife of twelve years, Sabrina, the lovely blonde who sat in the window seat next to him, gazing down with interested eyes at her first glimpse of Zakhar.Dirk was one of Juliana's few male friends in Hollywood. He was also one among the tiny handful of men who'd never tried to seduce her. Probably the only man who really saw the vulnerable woman behind the glamorous facade. Dirk and Sabrina were the only people besides Marty who knew Juliana was dreading the return to Zakhar. But even they didn't know why. There were secrets in Zakhar she wanted to keep, even from her best friends."Did you sleep at all?" Dirk asked her, his knowing gaze sweeping over the faint shadows beneath her eyes."Not much." She'd finally dozed off shortly after dawn, but then she'd woken with a start, her heart pounding, hearing words she'd heard in her head many times over the years. Come to me, Juliana. Come to me. Loving words. Lying words."Didn't think so. And that's not you. You can usually sleep anywhere. Remember when we were on location in Death Valley two years ago? No one else could sleep in that searing oven…except you."Dirk knows me too well, she told herself. Which wasn't surprising. She'd starred opposite him three times before in the past ten years, the last being the action-adventure flick set in Death Valley, San Francisco and Hong Kong—another hit for both of them. Such a resounding commercial success the studio was begging for a sequel, although so far Dirk had refused. "No way," he'd told Juliana in private. "There's nothing new that can be revealed about those characters." And on his sage advice Juliana had refused, too.

Frank This is the story of Andre, Mara's brother from McKinnon's Royal Mission, and Julianna, her best friend from when she was a teenager. Many years earlier, when Julianna was a teenager, her father had been ambassador to Zakhar. She and Mara were best friends and tended to trail after her older brother Andre, who treated them both kindly. Julianna developed a crush on Andre that later turned to love. Andre had felt the same way, but being older knew that he had to control himself until she was old enough to be sure. The night before she left for college, she went to him, but after she left she never heard from him again, except for one very insulting and heartbreaking note. Julianna went on to become a well known actress. She is offered the chance to play Eleonora, queen to the first King Andre of Zakhar, and really wants to do it. Theirs is a love story for the ages. But when she finds out that it will be filmed on location, in the palace itself, she is very reluctant to go. She knows that there will be no way to avoid seeing Andre again, but she's determined that she won't let him get to her this time.Andre is now King of Zakhar. He has never forgotten Julianna and worked hard to get her back to Zakhar. He is still in love with her, even though she had refused all contact with him when she had left years earlier. He is determined to show her how much he loves her and convince her to stay. I loved his conviction that she was the only one for him and how it had influenced his life from the time he met her.I loved Andre and Julianna. The sparks flew between them as soon as they met again. Julianna feels it immediately but refuses to let him know it. She is trying desperately to protect her heart from being broken again. Her battle is obvious, but she doesn't want to give in, worried that if she does he will simply walk away from her again. Andre is determined to win her heart. He knows that the flames of their passion are still there, and that he could use them to seduce her. But he wants her heart, and for her to come to him by her own desire. He does have some trouble sticking to his plan, and there are a few times that his emotions overcome his common sense. His bouts of jealousy are pretty revealing. Julianna tries to keep him at a distance, but the more often they encounter each other, the more she sees of the man she loved. These things are in direct opposition to the one who broke her heart so badly and she starts to wonder which is the real Andre. I loved the scenes with the landslide, which were both heartbreaking and heartwarming. It also finished breaking down the walls around Julianna's heart. The intensity of their feelings is never in doubt, the only question being how long it will take for them to overcome their pasts. The suspense of the story is very good. It is revealed that there is someone who has it in for Andre and this person has no problem taking out Julianna also. Andre is accustomed to the danger he faces as king, but is determined to keep Julianna safe. The intensity of the danger increases as the culprit appears to become more desperate. Each bit of information uncovered had me trying to decide who it was. The twists and turns to get to the conclusion kept me wondering for quite awhile. The final confrontation was definitely intense as was the danger to both Andre and Julianna. There is a link back to a character from previous books and I am interested to see if that is pursued in later books.I loved the background story of Andre's ancestors. Each part of their story that was revealed had a parallel in the modern characters' lives. The filming of the movie also gave Julianna more insight into what has made Andre the man he is today.

Richard Anticipation builds as the main couple in the second book of the Man on a Mission miniseries find themselves facing one troublesome dilemma after another. The story is suspenseful because of mounting threats from an unknown source, while powerful emotions can be found in each compelling scene. I never knew what the final outcome was going to be during several very intense moments, and my anxiety mounted for likable hero and heroine created by an author who knows exactly how to convey the innermost traits of her characters with convincing behavior. The realism depicted in KING’S RANSOM makes every single detail come across as believable. Amelia Autin only gets better with each new release. The latest movie in which Juliana Richardson will be starring takes her back to a place she never wanted to revisit, because it will mean coming in contact with the man whose past actions still haunt her. She was only a teenager when she met Andre Alexei IV, who was the Crown Prince of Zakhar where her father was an ambassador. Though she developed feelings for him, their relationship ended with her heart in tatters. With him now being the king, there is no way for her to avoid him. But Juliana plans to not let Andre know how much being near him once again affects her. With the woman he wants in his life forever finally back in his country for a few weeks, Andre plans to take advantage of the opportunity to show Juliana how he feels even after so many years apart. Before he can convince her of his sincerity, several seemingly random events occur, incidents that might be more physically threatening than first thought. Though Juliana wants nothing from Andre, he is not going to let anything happen to her. He also knows she must want him as much as he desires her, or they have no future together.Just because the reader is kept in the dark for much of the book about what is actually going on, there are still lots of clues sprinkled all through the story which lead to deductions when facts are eventually revealed. I always enjoy trying to determine the reason for everything that is happening and then seeing if I am correct, and Ms. Autin certainly gave me much to ponder in her story packed with loads of mysteries. With each new disclosure of information, I became even more fascinated in discovering the whole truth. The relationship between Andre and Juliana is one of the most emotional I have ever read. There is never a second when I did not sense they were exposing their feelings with honest frankness, whether spoken or only in their minds. Regardless of whose thoughts are being shown, each sentiment is so true-to-life and frequently caused a profound effect on my own feelings. I became totally immersed in the lives of this couple from the start, and the more I learned about them, the more I truly cared. Both are compassionate and their concern for others is clearly demonstrated in a number of ways. Holding back on what Andre and Juliana really think about the other often results in tension-filled conversations, especially when sexual craving also adds fuel to any interaction. The times when desire overrides control are beautifully portrayed with deeply felt longing that is particularly fiery. For the Man on a Mission miniseries, Amelia Autin creates realistic love stories with a perfect balance of suspense. KING’S RANSOM is intriguing plus unforgettably romantic.Received copy from author for a CataRomance review

Her father worked there when she was a teenager, but she hasn't been back since. It might have something to do with King Andre and how they left their relationship. Before the two can untie all of the tangles that led them to this point, they must find out who is trying to kill them and possibly take over the throne. This was a story of misunderstanding and miscommunication. The romance was sweet. There wasn't as much intrigue as I'd expected based on the type of book, but it was still fun and mysterious. I enjoyed the characters and the plot ended nicely.I received this book free of charge from Goodreads in exchange for my honest review.

In the past decade, the nation experienced an unusually active period in health policy with the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Historically, health policymaking has been a slow yet persistent evolution. The ACA, in spite of its magnitude, is an excellent example of the incremental evolution that characterizes policymaking in the United States. This book provides context and background for understanding the development of today s health reform legislation.

In the new edition of this widely used book, Beaufort Longest provides a framework for understanding the formulation, implementation, and modification of health policymaking at both the federal and state levels. Students will learn how policymaking relates to decisions that affect healthcare providers and patients. They will also gain insight into how they can influence the policymaking process. Incorporated in the book are excerpts from congressional testimony, news stories, executive orders, legislation, and other documents related to real-world policy issues.

Thoroughly updated and revised, this edition:

  • Discusses the ACA extensively, with examples of both its formulation and its implementation
  • Expands coverage of policymaking s implementation phase
  • Provides a new chapter on the role of courts in health policy and policymaking
  • Includes more than 30 appendices, many brand new to this edition, to illustrate the policymaking process

    Review

This is an excellent book. The author clearly defines the processes of health policy making, including modification. More healthcare professionals are realizing that understanding and influencing legislation is part of their professional duty, and this book is an excellent resource. This update was necessary because the previous edition predated the Affordable Care Act and the major changes it brought.

Summerfield Libby Day was seven years old when her mother and two sisters were massacred in a blood-soaked home invasion dubbed by the press as "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas." It was Libby's testimony which put her then-fifteen-year old brother, Ben, into prison for the rest of his life for the heinous murders. Now, it is almost twenty-five years later, and Libby, depressed, angry and broke has agreed to attend a meeting of the Kill Club, a strange conglomerate of people obsessed with famous murders. Some of the Kill Club members have become interested in the murders of Libby's family because they are convinced that Ben has been wrongly convicted. After meeting with the Kill Club, Libby, although still sure that Ben is the murderer, decides to try to make some cash from her family's grisly history by charging the Kill Club members to interview people who might have further information about the murders. In hauntingly compelling prose, this wonderfully talented author deftly unfolds the story of what really happened during the early morning hours of January 3, 1985, and how searching for, and uncovering, that truth will change the lives of Libby and Ben.The book is told in an interesting intermittent flashback format, with Libby, tough and damaged from her horrific childhood, narrating the present-day chapters in first-person, while the flashback chapters, told in third-person, describe the actions of several key characters on one winter's day in 1985.Besides Libby, the most fascinating character in the book is that of Ben, the awkward, aimless, angry boy, tottering on the brink of manhood. Ben, yearning for the father-figure which he never had, and being raised in a poverty-stricken household by a single overwhelmed mother, surrounded by bothersome little sisters, is such a troubled, unlikeable protagonist. Yet this author makes the reader see the good in Ben and how much he wants to fit in, even as the story moves the angst-ridden teenager inexorably toward the unspeakable crimes which are at the center of the narrative. This author's prose style is unique, complex and utterly creative. She is almost Dickensian in her ability to paint a word picture of a situation or a character in a few phrases. For instance, in the first chapter Libby describes herself after the murders: "Little Orphan Libby grew up sullen and boneless, shuffled around a group of lesser relatives...stuck in a series of mobile homes or rotting ranch houses all across Kansas." When Libby sees her brother Ben for the first time in almost twenty-five years, she views him through the glass at the visiting room at the prison: "He looked so much the same, pale face, that Day knob of a nose. He hadn't even grown much since the murders. Like we all got stunted that night."This novel is a fascinating murder mystery, but it is so much more than that. It is a wise, evocative character study -- a glimpse into the lives of people who are lost and are struggling to find their way in a dangerous world. Some never find a path, some show others a path, and some find refuge -- which can be either heaven or hell. But all of these people -- for better or worse -- matter, and their intertwined lives are a lesson to the reader that even the tiniest action may have huge unintended consequences.Highly recommended.

This is the mystery that is presented on the first page and the subsequent chapters detail Libby's attempt - half-hearted at first, to get the answers she so desperately needs in order for her to get on track in life. The book alternates points of view from Libby in present day to various characters from the past - describing the events that led up to, and include the infamous day of the murders twenty-five years previous - January 2, 1985.The book is paced and the author writes excellent and well developed descriptions of the characters - Libby's mother, aunt Diane, sisters and brother - as well as of the setting of the Kinnakee, Kansas farm and Libby's house on the bluff in Kansas City, Missouri. (As a KCMO native, I was surprised to find a book set in this Midwest city because it is so rare and I really enjoyed that fact about the book.)Because of the way the novel is written, the various points of view in each chapter are used to advance Libby's determination and investigation into actually and finally finding out who killed her family and why. The plot is revealed in layers and the reader isn't quite sure how all of this is going to come together - but it does. This is not a heart pounding thriller, but a more dark and plodding one - you know that denouement is just around the corner - you're hoping that Libby is going to get the information she wants as she confronts first one and then another of the surviving family and others involved with the search for the killer(s) of her family. Indeed, the hangers on - the Kill Club members - and her father, the loser Runner, only add to her consternation as she seems thwarted at every turn. Even her own brother, Ben, imprisoned by her testimony, seems to put roadblocks up instead of providing answers in the case. This is not a book for the squeamish and describes some grisly scenes that include depictions of bloody murder and one of senseless animal torture. Libby, the protagonist, is not a loveable character, but one who grows on the reader as we are drawn into her world. We almost feel her lassitude and recognize how much energy her efforts cost her. We root for her, but are wondering if we really do want to know the answers. Is Ben guilty or not? No one associated with this crime is free of criminal association or above suspicion. All in all - a good whodunit with a very appropriate ending.

Youngest daughter in a single-mother family of four survives the slaughter of said family and then testifies that her brother was the killer. Nearly twenty-five years later circumstances arise that make her question everything she's ever known and the ensuing story about finding answers leads us to a resolution. I thought this premise sounded very interesting and that the novel would provide me with a little bit of thought-provocation and a lot of suspense.Unfortunately, the way each of these characters were written made them very unsympathetic to me as a reader. Many may disagree with me, by saying that anyone who experiences the brutal death of a family member has the right to be selfish throughout the rest of his or her life. But, I disagree with that theory and the actions of Libby Day, her tone in telling the story and her mood towards those around her who only wanted to help did not endear her to me at all. What redeemed this novel for me were the flashback chapters told from the perspectives of Ben and Patty Day, accused brother and murdered mother respectively. Hearing the story told, in the day leading up to the murders, from their points of view were the pieces of this book that made me keep reading instead of tossing the book aside for something better. In these chapters, the author did a remarkable job of laying out the puzzles pieces that no one had been able to put together up to that point. This story has many layers and I'm sure that different readers will get many different messages from it. I was disappointed that I didn't like the main character more, but that didn't stop me from wanting to get answers about what really happened "that night" just like she did. This is not a novel to be read easily on a beach or vacation. You need to be open to giving all aspects of this story a lot of thought and you need to realize that there are no "warm fuzzies" anywhere within this novel, even when the mysteries are solved. If you go into it with that knowledge, then I think you'll enjoy your read much more than I did. I'm afraid I picked up this book thinking it was just like any other mystery, but it's so much more than that.Because I wasn't expecting it, I'm not sure I appreciated all those levels as much as I could have. But, there's no denying that this is a very well-written, inventive story given to us by an extremely talented author.

Still, the willowy blonde had found a unique way to gather a crowd for her sales demonstration. Beneath the awning that she'd erected beside her minivan, she chattered and joked, flipping her long, straight butter-yellow hair, winking her big catlike eyes at her laughing onlookers, the colorful scarves draped about her person waving languidly. All the while she worked, she pressed bits of string and wood, gravel and broken glass into a damp clay disk, which she would presumably then bake in a small microwave oven at her elbow. As tired as he was, Dr. Brooks Leland would have liked to have paused and joined in the fun, but he'd promised his best friend, Morgan, that he wouldn't be late to dinner. For once. Besides, since the untimely death of his pretty blonde wife, he avoided women—especially blondes—like the plague. Oh, he would do it again, go through all the pain and the grief, just for those two short years with Brigitte. He would not, however, risk that kind of loss for anyone else, let alone stand in the cold just to watch a lovely woman try to sell unusual objects of art created on the spot.Hurrying past the crowd, he crossed the parking lot to the entrance of the grocery store. Once inside, he picked up the multigrain bread requested by his hostess and, on impulse, grabbed a bouquet of flowers. He'd given up trying to make his old buddy jealous. Not that he'd ever had any real interest in Lyla Simone anyway, but it had taken a mighty shove to make the confirmed bachelor professor tumble into love with his comely graduate student, and Brooks had been only too glad to deliver the blow. Once he'd fallen, Morgan Chatam had fallen hard. He was not a man to give his heart lightly, as Brooks understood all too well. It did Brooks's heart good to see his old friend so happy after all these years, and for that reason alone he would take Lyla Simone flowers forever. The joy of having a goddaughter—Lyla and Morgan's child—suddenly thrust into his life only gave him more cause. They'd named her Brigitte Kay, after Brooks's late wife and one of Morgan's aunts. She was an adorable little thing, happily and unabashedly spoiled, and in truth, she was the one thing Brooks envied his old friend.Brooks made it through the checkout line, but before he could take his change, a teenaged male by the name of Jason Crowel burst inside, yelling for him."Doc Leland! Doc Leland! She fell down, and blood's all over!"Leaving everything behind, Brooks bolted for the door. He saw the crowd as soon as he hit the parking lot. Brooks sighed inwardly. It would be the blonde. Jason caught up to him, bouquet and grocery bag clutched in his hands. The sides of Brooks's overcoat flapped like wings as he sprinted across the pavement. Digging into the pockets of his dark slacks, he found his car keys and plucked them out as he drew near the van, Jason at his heels. He set off the car alarm so the young man knew which car to go to, then tossed the keys to Jason."Leave the groceries and flowers, grab the medical bag off the backseat.""Yessir."Elbowing his way into the crowd, Brooks asked, "What's happened here?"Several people began speaking at the same time."She started talking gibberish and just toppled over.""Hit her head on the pavement before anyone could catch her.""Splattered blood all over."The woman sat up, blinking at Brooks in confusion, blood streaking her pale hair. He checked her pulse, which was rapid and erratic, while speaking in a calm, reassuring tone."I'm Dr. Brooks Leland. You've taken a nasty blow to the head. Try not to move. Can you tell me your name?"She lifted a hand toward her head. He caught it and gently pushed it down again, repeating his question."Can you tell me your name?""Tharestershestersaben," she babbled.Jason returned with the medical bag, and Brooks took out his penlight, instructing firmly, "If no one has already done so, please call an ambulance."He made a quick examination, determined that her pupils were unequally reactive and that she needed stitches in her scalp, at the very least. Moreover, she seemed painfully thin, despite a suspiciously shapely figure beneath a heavy black leotard and all those artfully draped scarves. After applying a compress to staunch the flow of blood from the laceration to her scalp, he glanced around him."Any idea who she is?"Murmurs of denial went through the crowd before someone said, "License plate on the van is Missouri."Not a local girl, then, though even with Texas license plates, she might not be known. Texas was a big state, and the eight-million-strong Dallas-Fort Worth metro-plex sprawled just thirty-five miles to the north of Buffalo Creek, which itself boasted some twenty thousand souls. The ambulance arrived within five minutes, but in that time he managed to stop the bleeding from the scalp wound. His patient remained remarkably composed, though she said not a single coherent word. He suspected a stroke and feared that she might be bleeding inside her skull. He made a phone call."Morgan, I'm afraid I'm going to be late for dinner, after all."Eva recognized the tap-tap-tap of typing even before she opened her eyes. The room swam for a moment, refusing to come into focus and seeming much too bright. She automatically lifted a hand to shield her eyes, which ached with a ferocity that alarmed but also reassured her.The light flickered out just as a pleasantly masculine voice said, "Welcome back. You've been sedated."She remembered all too well struggling to get up off the X-ray table and telling them over and over again that she categorically refused to have pictures made of her head, but of course they hadn't understood a word she'd been saying. Still, the sedation had been a dirty trick. Reminding herself that they had merely been trying to help, she cleared her throat, swallowed and attempted to speak."That's a relief." The greater relief was that the words had come out clearly. Flush with success, she quipped, "For a minute I thought it was one of those deals where I'd had so much fun I'd forgotten.""Your speech has cleared. You experienced expressive aphasia. That's a condition where—""My brain was speaking English, but my tongue was talking Martian. Yeah, I got that.""Is your head hurting?""On a scale of one to ten, if a plastic doll is a one and Marilyn Monroe in her prime is a ten, let's go with Marilyn," she gritted out, gingerly fingering the heavy bandage on the back of her head. At the same time, she realized that most of her clothes were gone, replaced by a hospital gown, though she still wore her leggings and socks. "So did I crack the bone?""Just your scalp, thankfully.""How many stitches did I wind up with?""About twenty.""Yowza. Did they have to shave my head?""We did," he answered."But your hair's so thick it will cover up the bald spot nicely," said a reassuring female voice. At the same time, movement to Eva's left drew her attention to a nurse adjusting the drip on a saline bag."That's good," she muttered. Wouldn't want to leave an ugly corpse."You almost certainly have a concussion," the doctor went on smoothly. "Your pupils are not equally reactive. I really did not want to have to sedate you."The nurse added, "You gave us no other option. Doctor hasn't left your side since, though."Eva closed her eyes and carefully turned her head in his direction, gasping despite her best efforts to deny the pain. "It's the ICP," she murmured."Intracranial pressure," he said. "Yes, that would be my guess. Are you a medical professional? You seem familiar with the terminology.""Worked as a transcriptionist.""I see. Well, I've already administered IV medication that will reduce the swelling," he told her, "and now that you're awake, I can give you something to help with the pain. Are you allergic to any drugs?""Nope. None I've ever tried, that is. Hey, that's not a confession, by the way, just in case you're a DEA agent in deep cover."She heard him chuckle as he tapped. Then he moved around, supposedly injecting something into the IV line as he spoke. "Not a DEA agent. Just a doctor. That should take effect soon.""Not soon enough.""I've ordered an EEG, and—""No," she said."An EEG will tell us—""It won't tell you anything of significance," she said, forcing open her eyes. After the first flash of pain, her vision cleared and the pounding inside her skull settled to a survivable throb. He was even more handsome than she remembered, ridiculously so. She tried to focus on the black slacks, white shirt and black tie worn beneath an immaculately white lab coat, but she couldn't ignore the tall, fit, broad-shouldered man inside them.Coal black hair brushed straight back from a high forehead with strokes of silver at the temples looked very distinguished on a square-jawed face. A perfect nose, wide, spare mouth that showed a decided tendency to smile and a healthy tan added up to the ideal masculine blend. The eyes were what did it, though. Tawny-gold to go with the silver streaks, they all but shouted, "Treasure! This man is a treasure!" They declared his intelligence and a depth of character that seemed out of place in a man well shy of fifty. She'd be surprised, in fact, if he was much past forty, despite the threads of sliver at his temples.Regardless of those eyes and all they proclaimed, she frowned. She disliked handsome men on principle, especially those who knew they were handsome. And he knew it. As if challenging her to deny it, he grinned, displaying rascally dimples, a double set, twin grooves that slashed deeply into his cheeks on either side of his mouth and bracketed his even, white smile.Turning away from the computer terminal mounted on the wall beside the bed, he pulled over a rolling stool with his foot and sat. He was a tall one; at least three inches over six feet, she judged. Being a tall woman—five feet nine-inches—she appreciated a tall man, especially one tall enough that she didn't have to wear flats as a sop to his vanity. She liked heels, spike heels that showed off her long legs, not that it mattered anymore. Not much did."I introduced myself before," he said, putting out a square-palmed, long-fingered hand, "but it may need repeating. Dr. Brooks Leland. I was in the grocery store when you collapsed.""Lucky me," she said, shaking his hand."If you believe in luck," he returned, inclining his head."You don't?""No."She lifted an eyebrow, her hand still in his. "What, then? Fate?""No. And you still haven't told me your name."The medication was beginning to work and work well, so she inched closer, as if prepared to confide in him. "Don't you know that all the most attractive women are mysterious by nature?" she whispered. The nurse snorted and tried to cover it with a cough. He bent closer still and said, "The most attractive women eat healthy diets. When was the last time you ate?"As if to remind her that it had been far too long, her stomach rumbled loudly. She hid her embarrassment behind a sultry smile and a smoky tone of voice. "Complaining about my figure, Doc?" she asked, squeezing his hand.He let go of her, sat back and said to the nurse, "Bring her a full meal tray, please. Right away.""Yes, Doctor."The nurse swept instantly from the room, his word apparently being law.The door hadn't bumped closed before he leaned his elbows on the bed rail, looked down at Eva and bluntly stated, "The breast implants do not hide the fact that you are much too thin. I don't see signs of bulimia or anorexia, so I have to conclude that you simply haven't been able to eat regularly. Now, I ask you again, when was the last time you ate?"She sighed and looked at the peaks of her toes beneath the blanket. "It's been a day or two." She could feel his unrelenting gaze boring into her. "Okay, it was day before yesterday.""Because?""Duh. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get good caviar?" she cracked sarcastically. When he didn't laugh, she added, "I'm broke, all right?"Her money had been running short even before the van had broken down. Thankfully, they'd gassed it after making the repairs in Lancaster. Considering what they'd charged her, they should have done that and more. She'd be out of here shortly, though where she'd go she had no idea. The old jalopy ought to have enough juice to get her to Waco, though."That explains the art show in January," the doctor muttered.A male technician pushed a cart into the room just then, announcing, "EEG.""I've already told you, no EEG," Eva insisted."Why not?" Dr. Leland wanted to know. "The machine's already here. Doesn't take long. You can be done before your dinner arrives.""What part of broke don't you get?" she demanded, rolling her eyes at him. "I can't afford it. Okay? Besides, it's not going to tell you diddly. Anyone who knows me can attest that my brain function has never been normal. Trust me.""And where would I find these people who can attest to your abnormal brain function?" he asked lightly. She opened her mouth to tell him, realizing only at the last moment what she'd be giving away. "Ah, ah, ah," she scolded, wagging a finger. "I hate to stiff you, Doc. I really do. But a billing address won't do you a bit of good. You can't get blood out of a turnip, as the saying goes. Besides, I didn't ask to be brought here."He just smiled. "You weren't in any condition to ask, and this hospital takes all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.""Oh. Cool. Well, I'm on my way out of here as soon as I eat and change, anyway. I appreciate the tailoring." She waved a hand at the bandage. "But I've got places to go, Doc, things to do."He held up his hands, waved away the technician and said, "I'll cancel the order."The tech shrugged and wheeled the cart out of the room."You are a very stubborn young lady," he said, getting up and going back to the computer.

I don't like to pick a favorite book in a series but this time I will make an exception! This was my favorite book! That is saying something when before, I thought previous books were my favorite! Dr. Brooks Leland has been a secondary character but this time he is front and center. Oh, how I loved him! Such a tragic back story he has but he has still turned out to be very compassionate and caring. His introduction to Eva is sudden and his first impression is one of "can't wait to hand her off to someone else" but then, he can't get her off his mind. She touches his soul like no other woman has in years - his wife died tragically of cancer many years before. Eva's character was also written beautifully. She acts like so many people do when they think they are dying -- with humor, as they try to mask the fear of coming to grips with this looming in their future. And let's not forget the Chatam household! I loved visiting with the Aunties again! They are so fun and this time we get to see, once again, so many characters from previous books. How fun is that??!! All in all, a delightful book that I hardly put down. I had to read it almost without stopping because I didn't want to miss a moment with this wonderful group of characters!

Ever since I was introduced to the man early on in the series, I knew that he needed to find somebody to love and care for, and he did!Eva Russell was a character like none other. She was so strong, even in the midst of everything she was going through. I tried several times to put myself in her place and I just couldn't do it - I just don't think I would survive everything she had to endure!Dr. Brooks was the perfect hero. I loved how he put everyone in her life in their place. I loved his comebacks to everyone that said rude things to Eva. And I loved how he held her up when she was at her weakest! Kudos to Arlene James for a wonderful, wonderful book! Keep them coming!

I really love reading her books and was truly amazed once again. I especially love how when the story begins the people are thrown together in a chance accidental situation and end up becoming attatched, but not before needing the others help. The highlight is how the triplet aunts make it all work together with much prayer and God's intervention. Once again, I was delighted by Ms. James. Another fine novel. Can't wait for the next one. I haven't been disappointed yet.
