About the Author Fannie Farmer (1857 1915) came to cooking due to a stroke at the age of sixteen that forced her to remain homebound for over a decade. She took up cooking so thoroughly that she turned her mother s home into a boardinghouse known for its uncommonly delicious meals. Once she was able to walk again, Farmer attended the Boston Cooking School in the late 1880s and learned to approach cooking as a domestic science, as was popular then. The cookbook she eventually published under the school s name in 1896 became unexpectedly famous, thanks to its system of standardized measuring vessels and level measurements.

Don't be fooled - kindle version is unreadable By Susannah Amazon habitually mixes reviews for the print edition of a book in with the reviews for the kindle version, in order to give the appearance of a high rating for the kindle version. This is a classic cookbook that should be in every cook's library, but NOT in the kindle edition. If you've had the misfortune to buy this edition, I strongly encourage you to return it and get a refund - which you can do by selecting that option from the list that will appear when you go into your list of kindle books in the "manage your devices" section. Click on the selection box for the book in question, and then select "return for refund." Now - here's why you should take the trouble to return the book. EVERY SINGLE PAGE contains the type of nonsense that I've included here (and which I have copied exactly as it appears in the kindle edition):Prfsiticnt of i/t Boston (!roo]ftinfl=', 1 tablespoon granulated v*^"_J^ *^"P ^^^S^^ (scant)_^ rBeets, carrots, parsnips, radishes, sweet potatoes, Roots {, .. i. 1 i. J i.y^ cup butter y^ cup boiling waterThere is not a page in the book that is completely readable, and not a single recipe that isn't full of irrelevant symbols instead of actual directions and amounts. You will not be able to make a single recipe in the book and, in many cases, will be unable to even tell what the recipe is for. Amazon has abrogated their duty to ensure that the products they sell meet any standard at all. This is their responsibility, as the vendor, and is not the responsibility of the buyer who purchases in good faith.

I doubt the previous reviewer even made any of the recipes. My family has always used this book and has turned out he best pies and baked beans you could imagine. This is a famous cookbook.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Brother is happy. By mimi This edition is very close to the one we grew up with. At thirty bucks, a little more than I planned to pay, but worth it for the joy it brought, and, I am told, it is in excellent condition. Favorite recipes are the shaker jar waffles and the 8 inch square sour cream chocolate cake. Just terrific food prepared with common ingredients, predating the onslaught of convenience food cookbooks.
