Depression is a disabling condition which can adversely affect a person's work, sleep, eating habits, and family life-as well as one's overall health. Unfortunately, while commonly used treatments can be highly effective, they may not be ideal for everybody. For instance, some drugs have unwanted side-effects, and many people are turned off by the social stigma of going to therapy. Money can be an issue as well. This is the point of Exercise Beats Depression. It is not a substitute for medical therapy, but rather represents another option that can be used alone or in combination with other treatments to effectively lower or eliminate the symptoms of depression. Here's a little of what's inside...
- you pick either the strengthening exercise program or the aerobic exercise program
- either exercise program will take up no more than one hour, three times a week of your time
- either exercise program can be done at home or at the gym
- depression levels typically start to go down the first week you start to exercise.
- over the following weeks, depression levels continue to improve, and studies show that even if you stop exercising, the improvements you have made in depression can be maintained
- who can benefit? Exercise has been shown to be effective on people diagnosed with major depression. Exercise can also help just about anyone to generally improve their mood.

Overcoming depression can seem impossible. Especially when the medications prescribed by your doctor make you so loopy, sleepy, and overexcited – all at the same time – that you’re functioning even worse than you were before the medications.Exercise Beats Depression is a book that says it will show you a way to help overcome your depression without pills or doctors.Section I presents an overview of exercise and the ways it can help depression. I really like the way the author presents the information in an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand format. If you were skeptical before you began, as I was, then you’ll quickly be put at ease based on the author’s teaching style. I was skeptical, not because I wasn’t sure that exercise could help depression, but because I wasn’t sure if the author would be able to succinctly present a compelling case for it. I also like that the author quickly addresses any concerns you might have – such as what makes him an authority on the subject, how and why the science behind exercise and depression make sense - and gets them out of the way.Another area in which the author excels is in asking and answering the logical questions people might have such as “Does exercise work better if it’s done with other people compared to exercising by yourself?” and “How long do I have to exercise before I will see an improvement in my depression?”. These are the questions that are in the back of your mind and ones that – if you were face-to-face with an expert, you could ask him, but since you’re reading a book – it feels good to know that he’s anticipated your questions and responded to them, without leaving you hanging and wondering about the answer. The next two sections are the nitty-gritty of the book, which makes sense since the author is a physical therapist with almost 20 years of experience.Section II presents an overview of using strength (weight lifting and resistance) training to beat depression. The author starts with the basics, as if you’ve never exercised before, and moves on from there, providing detailed instructions, with photos, on how to complete the exercises for maximum efficiency. He also provides notes on how to modify the exercise if it’s a bit too difficult for you, or if you need it to be a little more difficult. For some of the exercises he also presents alternatives in case the reader cannot complete the regular exercises for one reason or another.Section III presents an overview of using cardiovascular training to beat depression. This section is much shorter since it doesn’t need to include instructions on how to walk or run, although it does include 6 warm-up exercises. Both sections include worksheets to help you track your progress, quick start guides which gives you a one-page summary of what your goals are and what you need to remember. Finally, there’s a reference section at the end.Whether you’re interested in exercising instead of using medications or other forms of depression therapy or in addition to them, this book appears to be a great starting point for understanding how and why it makes sense, and how to get started inexpensively and quickly.

Hansen Jr. This is a great book that breaks down the "how" and the "why" the symptoms of depression can be lessened with this exercise program. This step-by-step guide is backed by years of research by the author. Jim Johnson gets instant credibility with this one. This book answers a lot of questions for readers such as: Why is it important to exercise when depressed, what kinds of exercises to do, and the purpose of them all. This book covers an exercise regime, stretches, and also includes pictures that help the reader to learn quicker. This book will prove to help many that are battling this terrible mental illness. One small investment into this book can reap huge returns into a positive mindset!

Clear, understandable and very useful By Skylar Greenstreet Depression can leave you feeling like you are unable to do anything at all, so when I first came across this book I doubted whether exercise was even something I could do let alone actually help beat my depression. I'd also been looking for natural alternatives to anti-depressants which I've been keen to avoid and it turned out this book has been more effective than I could have dared hope. The jargon and complicated information of many other exercise books have put me off in the past but the information in here was clearly written and understandable. Also the relevant anecdotes and advice related to using it to help with depression made it incredibly useful in reducing the effects and my friends and family have already begun notice changes in my life. Thoroughly recommended!
