The fourth installment in Baron R. Birtcher's bestselling Mike Travis series begins when a botched blackmail scheme draws Mike, an ex-homicide cop, back from Hawaii to Los Angeles to the aid of his estranged brother, a man of privilege with the soul of a predator.A seemingly arbitrary act of violence in Macau has initiated a chain of events that ripples across the Pacific, developing into a thunderstorm of murder, extortion, and betrayal half a world away. Together with Travis' friend, Snyder - a man with a checkered past of his own - Travis uncovers vile truths involving sexual slavery and insatiable personal greed that have already cut a path of vicious cruelty from the shipyards of Hong Kong to the shores of the Hawaiian islands. As Travis unravels the disparate thread of duplicity and moral compromise, it threatens to devastate the lives of one powerful family, while Travis himself becomes a suspect in a murder that threatens to destroy his life as well. This stylish thriller, epic in scope and atmosphere, driven by compelling characters, will rise to a climactic confrontation on the shores of a place that some call paradise.

Review Birtcher returns to his Mike Travis series (Angels Fall, 2008) in this fast-paced mystery. It s 2004, and Travis is enjoying his retirement from the LAPD by taking tourists around the Hawaiian Islands on his 72-foot sailing yacht. A panicked call from his brother, Valdent, reunites him with the families of fortune he turned his back on when he became a cop. Meanwhile, a parallel story starts in 1994 Macau but resurfaces with a bang at the end of this satisfying thriller. Fans of the prolific Stuart Woods and Randy Wayne White will hope that Birtcher's engaging series has an equally long life." --Booklist"This well-executed fourth Mike Travis crime thriller takes the former LAPD homicide cop from his home in Hawaii back to Los Angeles. Travis's tale eventually merges with the tragic story of a young Chinese woman, May Ling, who was forced into sexual slavery in Macao in 1994. Readers will hope they don't have to wait another seven years for the world-weary Travis's next adventure."--Publishers Weekly"Birtcher is a solid, fluent writer; the story unfolds with good-humored ease, and Travis is a personable narrator. All of the elements are in place for a tense thriller." --Kirkus Reviews"A thrilling page turner with a very complicated plot that all comes together in the end. This story is well written, and keeps our interest with believable action, and memorable characters. Highly recommended." --Detective Mystery Stories

Hard Latitudes By Gloria Feit The fourth entry on the Mike Travis series is just as good as the earlier books, and that is high praise indeed. The novel begins with the protagonist looking back at incidents that began eleven years prior, and an intricate and fascinating tale it is. It starts in Macau in 1994, with an act of violence whose repercussions are felt in different far-flung parts of the world and do not, initially, involve Mike in any way.Mike, 6’2” and a retired LAPD homicide detective, since leaving LA has been living in Hawaii, where he runs a chartering service for private scuba and luxury cruises out of Kona, on his 72’ sailing yacht, the Kehau, after running a similar operation off the Southern California coast. Mike is the son of a very wealthy man, which he tries to forget, mostly with success, nor make others aware of it. When his brother, heavily involved in the family business, calls from LA and tells Mike that his “indiscretions” have come back to haunt him in a big – and very public - - way, Mike makes immediate arrangements to return to LA to help him out (making his relationship with his significant other, Lani, even more problematical).Along the way the author reflects on the history of both South Central LA in late April 1992, during the time of the riots, when he was still on the police force, as well as descriptions of the natural beauty of Hawaii, about which he says, e.g., “Twilight is my favorite time of day to walk the Kona waterfront. The flickering lights of the village begin to cycle on, piercing the encroaching darkness, the heat of the day leeching from the concrete and up through the soles of your sandals while cool wind drifts in off the water.” He pays tribute to LA as well, describing the sunrise as presenting a sky that is “a purple so deep that it appeared to bruise the sky.” At the same time, he also says “Every time I come back to this town, it slithers back inside me. I had never intended to be a cynic, never imagined I would feel such contempt, and especially had never wanted to lose hope. I wanted to believe in greater things, like grace, like justice, like integrity; I wantd to believe in heroes or a higher purpose.”The narrative is interspersed from time to time with the events set into motion in Macau over a decade ago.Mike’s efforts on behalf of his brother as a “reluctant pi” have repercussions that place both him and his brother in jeopardy, as well as Mike’s former partner on the LAPD, Hans Yamaguchi, who assists him in his efforts, which have unexpected and serious consequences. In addition to this story line, this is a tale of sexual slavery and human trafficking, not for the faint of heart I might add, with fairly frequent violence (happily, for the most part not graphic.) It is a gripping story, beautifully written, and highly recommended.

Unknown to her, this will culminate in violence and death as events move to the US, where she is to be a pawn in a deadly duel between the Chinese and a pharmaceutical giant.Travis Kamahale Van de Groot gave up his name and position in the Van de Groot family-empire to become his own man. After a career as a police detective in L.A., he moved to Kona, Hawaii to live on his sailboat. But trouble continues to follow him. His brother is his latest problem. Valden Van de Groot is a predator of women, and he’s in a mess again. It seems he picked up a 17-year-old girl in an L.A. hotel lounge, and their bedroom activity was videotaped. Now someone is blackmailing him for three million dollars, and Valden wants his brother to take care of the problem. After taking care of the L.A. problem in the first half of the book, Mike Travis returns to Hawaii, where he encounters the pharmaceutical giant of industry, Phillip Lennox and his son, J.R. Someone has kidnapped J.R.’s son, and Phillip’s grandson, and J.R. wants Mike to find him. Now the three stories come together, as the boat May Ling is on flounders in the sea, and the crew has abandoned ship. It’s being towed to Hawaii, and may prove disastrous to Phillip Lennox’s empire, and Mike Travis fills in all the blanks from his brother’s blackmail to the child’s kidnapping, and the connection with Lennox’s pharmaceuticals and the tragic story of May Ling.A very complicated plot that all comes together in the end. This story is well written, and keeps our interest with believable action, and memorable characters. Highly recommended.

At least 1,500 to date.Like others readers the problem I have with writers is that if we are lucky they write one book a year, and I read at least one book a week. Therefore when I find someone I like, I read everything they have done. That is the case with Baron, I have read all five of his novels. If you are new to this writer, after reading this novel, you to will go back and pick up the other four. While I enjoyed the first three books in this series, I believe that Baron did something in this one that carried over from his last stand-alone, “Rain Dogs”. He brings grit to Mike Travis, and I love it. You can feel how upset Mike gets by what is happening around him. Especially when he thinks he has no control.I won’t go into the story as others here have done that before me.Do yourself a favor. Read this novel. After you do, I suggest that you also get a copy of the Stand-alone, “Rain Dogs.”You will be very glad that you did.PS. Just received a call from my brother, another avid reader, he read this book in one sitting. Said it was the best novel he has read in years. Thanks Baron, Write Faster, Please.
