From the Author As I wrap up the Dark Seas series with this book, I admit to feeling a bit sad to say goodbye to my shapeshifting mermaid clan in the Bama bayou. The characters and the town of Bayou La Siryna feel real to me after spending so much time with them. Lily's story in Siren's Call is all about redemption. In earlier books, she did a few unsavory things and was often portrayed as cold in her treatment of the men who fell for her siren's voice. But to me, she's always been the most interesting and mysterious one of the mermaid clan. Writing it was a journey into the soul of a woman who needs to learn much of love and how to express her true feelings. This book also incorporates Choctaw lore. Native Americans in South Alabama have a fascinating story about mermaids. They were called Okwa Nahollo which loosely translates as "white people of the sea." While such a tale does exist, I expanded upon it for fiction purposes. If you enjoy Native American legends, be on the lookout for a new book I'm writing for Harlequin Nocturne. It takes place in the same town of Bayou La Siryna, but it's about hoodoo and the Choctaw tale of evil shadow spirits that roam the bayou woods. And--as always--it has lots of romance! By Book Enthusiast I first learned about Debbie Herbert on twitter, and the first book I read from her was her debut (the first book in this series). I was an instant fan! I bought the second book without even thinking about it, and from there, I knew one thing: I would be buying everything with her name on it for the rest of all time. I LOVE her writing style, I ADORE her imagination, I'm FASCINATED by the worlds she creates. My family probably doesn't enjoy me semi-ignoring them for days at a time after each Debbie Herbert release, but hey, we all deserve some "me time" right?I have to say, I don't know why I never considered the possibility, but I was really sad when I realized this was the last book in this series. I really hope Herbert has something else lined up, but I could have just kept reading this and reading this. The good news is, the way it's written it's very easy to read these books more than once, which is EXACTLY what I plan to do!The romance between Nash and Lily was BRILLIANT. Stole my heart from the very first instant, and I have to say, I was in love with these characters as much as I was in love with the story. This is a book you won't be able to put down, and characters you will not soon forget.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A fun series conclusion By Charline Ratcliff, Author Siren’s Call, by Debbie Herbert, appropriately enough is being released on June 1st, 2015. I say “appropriately” because this book does, after all, feature a mermaid as its leading female character – and since summer is almost upon us, Siren’s Call will makes for a fitting beach or pool read.Siren’s Call is also the conclusion to Herbert’s Dark Seas series, but never fear – this title can still be read as a stand-alone novel. Per Herbert’s letter to the reader (prior to the beginning of this tale), Siren’s Call is sort of about redemption for Lily. While I’m uncertain how much mischief she got into in the prior two books – it is quite obvious from the very beginning of this ‘tail’ that Lily is intensely disliked in her home town.Then, of course, there’s Nashoba Bowman, aka Nash, who just returned to the Bayou and is the polar opposite of Lily. He’s dark – she’s fair. He’s brooding – she’s lighthearted. He’s well-liked by all – and she, well…as previously mentioned, she’s practically hated. The additional bad news for Lily is that she feels an instant attraction to Nash; however, Nash seems to be immune to her ‘siren’s’ charms. Lily has never before met a man who didn’t immediately want her; to say that she’s thrown for a loop is probably the understatement of the year.With that said, I’ll leave the rest of the story alone – allowing the reader to discover all the mystery, intrigue, and romance that Siren’s Call holds.In summary, Siren’s Call was a fun read. Well-written, appropriately suspenseful where needed and overall an engaging read.(Book received free from author in return for an honest review).

By Joseph McGarry I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for this review.Siren's Call is the 3rd installment of the Dark Seas trilogy, focusing on the Borsage sisters, Shelly, Jet, and Lily, who live in Alabama. Book 1, Siren's Secret, focused on Shelly, book 2, Siren's Treasure, focused on Jet, and book 3 focuses on Lily. To update everyone, Shelly married Tillman, the sheriff. Jet married Landry, a former FBI agent, and is pregnant. The Bosarge sisters are all mermaids, a secret known only to them and to their husbands. Lily has the gift of the siren's song, which attracts men to her. This makes the women in town very unhappy. One day at the grocery store, Lily runs into Nash, and old childhood friend, who is immune to Lily's siren song. Nash is a photographer, who came back to take pictures of the area. Since he is immune to her song, Lily wants him more. She also runs into Opal, Nash's assistant. The novel follows their interaction. Lily's mother comes to town to convince Lily to go back to the mermaid community. Nash's grandfather, who is dying, tries to convince Nash to stay. He also tells Nash of the legend of the Okwa Nahollo, a race of underwater creatures that live in the bayou. Nash and Opal have secrets of their own, which I won't reveal here because of spoilers.Overall I thought the book was great, just like the first 2. The plotline was defined, with just enough twists to keep everyone interested. The characters of Lily, Nash, and especially Nash's grandfather were very well-developed. The climactic scene was very engrossing.I had two issues with the book. First, the ending with Carl Desmukes. He had been threatening the sisters by claiming to have documents showing that Tillman's father had been embezzling from the county. He had been threatening them for all 3 books. It ended too abruptly, in the middle of the book. I would have liked to have seen it at least extended out to the end of the book. Second, the ending, which was designed to wrap up the trilogy, was too much a Disney movie "happily ever after" ending. I believe there should have been some tragedy in the ending.These are just minor quibbles. All in all, it was a great book. She's currently working on her next book about the Okwa Nahollo. I look forward to it.Full disclosure: The Okwa Nahollo is a Native American legend. The author stated that she did enhance some elements of the legend for dramatic purposes.
