For the most part it is a Robert Richter sampler, featuring the initial pages of each of three fine novels that feature Cotton Waters as the protagonist: Something in Vallarta, Something Like a Dream, and Something for Nothing. I have read all of those at least once, and I have recommended them to others.I purchased this new book because it begins with a story I have not read before, Reina's Three Husbands, which we are told "introduces the 'Something' mysteries, featuring a gringo expatriate in illegal exile on the Mexican west coast." The gringo in exile is of course Cotton Waters, a character I became hooked on with the first novel. Cotton is known to his cantina buddies as "Algo," short for "Algodon," which means "Cotton" in Spanish. "Algo" of course means "Something" in Spanish. In Reina's Three Husbands, Cotton, or "Algo," at the request of her dying father, searches for Reina's three husbands whose relationships with Reina had not always been easy ones. For example, as he confronts her second husband, Enrique: "A slight slice of smile began to cut across his smooth face, and he carelessly scratched at his left ear where Reina had bitten off the lobe." It was Reina's father who had rescued Cotton years ago when he was "one of those drunken, burnt-out gringo idealists shipwrecked on a Mexican tropical beach while the American ship of state was breaking apart on the shoals called Vietnam."
