From the Back Cover Did you know that as we move beyond 60 years of age, thefood choices our bodies and brains need to fight off declining physical andmental abilities are quite different to what was needed one more younger?Eat to Cheat Ageingis unique - firmly based on the science of nutrition for ageing, but writtenfor the everyday reader as well as health professionals - it's not about faddiets, it's about eating to help your body meet the challenges of later age, prevent premature ageing and stave off dementia, diabetes and more. It's aboutgoing back to basics: eating, enjoying real food, being active at a level thatworks for you and being able to live life to the full. The distinct needs of a more mature body and the importantrole of food in how well we function are too often forgotten when food andhealth are discussed. So much so, that failing to change what you eat in laterlife can put you on the path to debilitating frailty, cognitive decline, diminishing vitality and independence.Dietitian, Ngaire Hobbins provides readers with theunderstanding and tools to make food choices to help them continue with vital, independent lives as well as practical, sensible advice for those struggling toget the most from life, or who need active nutritional support.Prominent geriatrician Dr Peter Lipski, says of eat To CheatAgeing: "I commonly see frail elderlypeople with multiple comorbidities including dementia, Parkinson's disease, heartdisease, gait and balance disorders who have associated severe malnutrition. Ngaire'sbook is a very practical approach with easy steps to improve nutrition andhealth for everyone facing older age. "

By Amos the Magic Dog's Owner To say this should be 'required reading' may be overstating the message slightly, but for most of us, it will have some good information to offer. Having read a number of books in the passed year, on health, aging and diet, I can say this book fit neatly in the mix. Hobbins is telling us what we need to do to live healthier and better quality lives as we age. So if you plan to age, you can probably benefit from knowing how important retaining muscle tissue is, and how dangerous for your brain it is to lose weight without due care. She also addresses a problem many older people have, that of losing their appetites. I have seen this happen in my own aged relatives and it leads to a lot of problems. This is written in an easy to understand way and has some very practical information. Devour it.

Insightful and full of practical advice By Amazon Customer I originally came across information about this book on the Australian ABC web site, where the article title seemed to imply that it was ok to eat whatever you like. However, from some further research on the author's web site, it became apparent that this book was in fact a very serious study of the dietary needs of older people based on decades of practical experience by the author. If you are over 50, or you are in any way involved in looking after people 50 years or older, this book is a must read as it is insightful and full of practical advice based on those decades of experience by the author.

A must read if you are headed towards the "golden years" or if you are responsible for looking after anyone who is elderly. There is a wealth of information on appropriate diet as well as a lot of information on how to go about making sure that elderly people actually eat enough so that they remain strong and able to avoid fractures - the reason a lot of people finish up in nursing homes. Or worse.
