The present volume draws on nine book-length collections of Thomas’s poetry, and includes a generous selection of new poems. Five of the collections are comprised of poems of geographic place, four of which are set primarily in Texas. His fifth “place” collection is set on the coast of Maine. The poems selected from his remaining collections range in subject matter from outlaw bikers to ekphrasis; from the avian world to an asylum for the criminally insane. PIANO TUNER The tools of his trade are unassuming and relatively primitive. The stagehand is his counterpart in drama. In the shadows of architects, for grand cathedrals of sonatas, he lays the bricks. Of pitch and tone, he is master. Even a concert pianist steers clear of his ear.

Thomas, one of the most important poets living and writing now. This "new and selected" anthology is filled with example after example of Thomas's unique and distinctive mastery of the lyric poem. The new work is particularly impressive for the way in which Thomas uses literal imagery and short, spare lines to capture the essence of the human condition. In "Cantaloupes," for instance, we see the "numberless melons" stretching across the fields of Ignacio's dreams with their "musky scent"--it is the promise of prosperity--and yet, for this seasonal laborer, the "black shade" of the melon leaves is also home to "diamondbacks." Even in the brightest, most promise-filled light of possibility, the darkness waits for all of us. Indeed, as Thomas writes in "Chiaroscuro," the masterful opening work in the collection, "The Brighter the Sun...The Darker the Shadow." In addition to the accomplishment of the new poems that open the book, the selected poems section provides a sampling of the best of Thomas's earlier works. As I read them all again, I was struck (again) by Thomas's versatility. Those who might think of him as a Texas poet, or a Southwestern poet, will be most pleasantly surprised by the depth and breadth of Thomas's oeuvre. The unfortunate fact that some of these earlier books are currently unavailable in print makes AS IF LIGHT ACTUALLY MATTERS even more important. If you buy one book of poems this year, make it this one.

In addition to the overall quality of the poetry, a good point is the forty-one pages of new poetry gathered from print and online journals and publications. In these pages of the collection, we hear Thomas’s familiar voice filled with sharp imagery and precise phrasing contend with subjects as far ranging as a dump in Alabama to a curandero in the Sierra Madre. Another value is that, in collecting poems from nine of Thomas’s full-length books and four of his chapbooks, As If the Light Actually Matters keeps many of his poems in print since a number of his previous publications are limited editions no longer in print. The problem with As If the Light Actually Matters is the problem with many “new & selecteds.” All the good poems that didn’t make the cut. If all of Thomas’s previous books were still in print, this would be no problem. If readers wanted more poems about West Texas or outlaw bikers, they could acquire the complete Stark Beauty or The Fraternity of Oblivion. But this quibble is a result of Thomas’s success in creating profound and riveting poetry that appeals to poetry devotees and to readers not normally drawn to poetry.Finding an overriding theme in a “new & selected” can be difficult, but the title points to the image that ties together fifteen years of Thomas’s creation. Light weaves throughout the poems in all intensities from “a hot shaft of sunlight” (“The Dragonfly”) to night “thick as black syrup” (“Warm Eggs”). It becomes other than light, the skin needed to make it through the night (“Gibbous Moon”). It becomes the stationery on which to compose an e-mailed letter (“Stationery of Light”). Light is the subject and tool of artists, the moral barometer of the poems, the substance of Larry Thomas’s vision. We could drop the “As If” of the title because for the poet “Light Actually Matters.”

There is not a great, known poet who is more consistent in style, and consistently, he is very good. The apparent simplicity of his verse should not undermine an estimation of his achievement. Worthy of any audience, his lines equal in quality to the brush strokes of a world-class painter and scores of musicians who, like Thomas, know the value of light and darkness and who, like so few of us, consistently, expertly negotiate the mysterious, overwhelming space between. Thomas cuts every grain to size, and we are seduced by the subtle residue of his efforts.Ken Hada
