By Clinton Huston This book was excellent!!! Truly a must read for anyone dealing with mental illness from either end. I don't see how anyone dealing with mental illness, either personally or through someone else, could come away from this book without an overwhelming sense of hope and optimism for the future! Second only to a properly prescribed medication, this book is probably the best medicine you could have to help break through the heavy clouds of despair that mental illness can bring. Not only is it loaded with practical and useful ideas for thriving in spite of the struggles imposed by mental illness, it was written in such a light-hearted, easy to read format that it could also have been titled something like Thriving With Mental Illness for Dummies.Actually the strategies in this book are excellent for a whole host of chronic health conditions and for that matter, parenting and marriage in general. I have no doubt that anyone who reads this book will come away from it inspired and with new perspectives on how they can be a better parent or spouse. My wife suffers from a chronic genetic condition known as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and while her struggles are brought on by chronic pain and fatigue rather than mental illness, reading this book was like reading a biography of our 16 years together. We have faced many of the same challenges and from them we have found the same answers that Mequell has. Trust when I say that her suggestions work! In fact, this book has taken a large weight off of my wife's shoulders because she too has also felt compelled to write a book to help others suffering with chronic pain and illness. However, after reading this book she realized that Mequell has already encapsulated the same message she wanted to share, and now she can just recommend this book instead!

Written as a guidebook, or 'what she wishes someone told her,' Ms. Buck's primary audience is people who have just received a diagnosis of mental illness. While she herself has bipolar disorder, her insights can apply to a myriad of other diagnoses. In addition, and perhaps even more valuable, her writings provide helpful, practical advice for the loved ones of the mentally ill. Because if you yourself don't have a mental illness, you love someone who does. Whether you know it or not.Ms. Buck speaks colloquially; the book reads like she's sitting across the table from you- or, more appropriately, lounging on the couch by your side. Perhaps in her pajamas. She candidly tells her own story and what she has gleaned from her years of study, research, and trial and error. This is a practical book, with no-fluff advice and cautions on how best to deal with what seems to be the worst possible news.Yet perhaps what I loved most about the book was the proof I held in my hands that one CAN thrive with mental illness. Ms. Buck is a poster child for dispelling the stigma associated with mental illness. She is a brilliant, beautiful, healthy champion who has fought the odds to become a success. Most impressively, she seems to be a heroic mother. She has turned a trial into an opportunity for her family to learn about compassion and service, and she certainly seems to have succeeded. Her parental advice was stellar for anyone, with or without mental illness. She is my new hero.

A person who has been in battle has a different perspective than an academic specialist. This book is candid and heart-wrenching, yet witty and uplifting in every respect. It deals unflinchingly with powerful issues of core survival. The author pulls no punches and addresses the downward spiral of recognizing symptoms, grappling with diagnosis, surviving the crash at the bottom, finding the right medical help, getting the right perspective with (and mix of) medications. She describes her own terrifying experience of teetering on self-harm. But the inspiration she offers is of incredible value. She addresses basic understandings, how to preserve or reclaim relationships, and constructive coping mechanisms. She demonstrates that mental illness is not a shameful problem, but rather a condition that afflicts many accomplished and wonderful people. Nearly every family has been touched by some form of depression or mental illness, and this book offers incredible insights for those who suffer the symptoms themselves and for those who yearn to help their loved ones. The wisdom of this book has value well beyond its stated audience; every parent, every teacher, every person who wants to improve themselves or the community around them will benefit from this beautiful illustration of faith, grace, and courage.
