All of them will help you expand your recipe repertoire,” states the American Heart Associations’ latest cookbook. At three hundred pages and four pages, this oversized paperback targets those interested in a dozen different ways to prepare food. After a preface and notes about cooking, shopping, eating and living healthily, there are one hundred and seventy-five recipes, ending with resources and an index.Divided into twelve sections, the book’s techniques used are slow cooking, microwaving, blending, grilling, stir-frying, braising, stewing, steaming, poaching, broiling, roasting, and baking. Each section has a list of the recipes at the beginning as well as a short discussion about the method with equipment needed and tips. Each recipe usually starts with a title and blurb about the dish along with serving and volume size. The instructions are in paragraph form on the right side of the page with the ingredients in used order on the left side. Cook’s tips and caloric information are set apart in light gray boxes. The recipes cover from one to two pages each with no corresponding pictures of finished products. Some of the unusual dishes are citrus-cilantro salmon, trout with grape-tomato relish, edamame dip, beets with orange gremolata, plum-sauced pork with Asian vegetables, beer-braised beef with molasses, meatless cassoulet, tilapia packets with artichokes, vanilla-infused pears, browned tofu with bok choy, lemon-garlic turkey tenderloin, and manicotti-style chicken roll-ups.A helpful bonus is the added information at the back of the book that includes lists of heart-healthy pantry items, cooking equipment and tools, kitchen and food safety basics, food groups and suggested servings along with data about the recipes and the index.Although only eight full page photographs of random dishes are included one-quarter into the book and no preparation times are highlighted, this makes a nice collection of healthy recipes that cover a myriad of cooking styles.Having produced over a dozen cookbooks focusing on healthy eating, the American Heart Association’s mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and strokes. Thanks to Blogging for Books for furnishing this complimentary book in exchange for a review of the reader’s honest opinion.

American Heart Association Grill It, Braise It, Broil It: And 9 Other Easy Techniques for Making Healthy Meals, published by the American Heart Association, is here to change all that. The recipes within this book are both, delicious and easy to make. Cooking instructions and ingredients are clear and easy to read. Each recipe has a complete, per serving nutritional breakdown. The book divides the recipes by cooking method. These methods include:Slow-cookingimgl1554MicrowavingBlendingGrillingStir-fryingBraisingStewingPoachingBroilingRoastingBakingPart of cooking books that I love is their design. I love cook books that are full of food pictures. This paper-back book is a very simple design. Out of the nearly 300 pages, and 175 recipes there are only 8 photos. These are bunched together toward the front section of the book. The rest of the pages are filled with recipe text simply printed in black and white. If you are looking for a cook book to keep on your coffee table or kitchen counter as a design element or for "food inspiration" this is not it.If you are looking for healthy recipes that taste great, then this is the book you want to get. American Heart Association Grill It, Braise It, Broil It,provides many different cooking options that covers all food groups and cultures, and utilizes a broad range of ingredients. Here's to you and always having a healthy meal plan!

We talked about eating healthier sometimes, and he would frequently admit that the real problem was he and his wife just didn’t know how to cook, so they’d put off eating until 10 pm, when they’d finally throw some Hamburger Helper together for dinner and go right to sleep. My family also has issues and we have tried to eat earlier, healthier, and I’ve tried to learn to cook better. Although I’ve progressed some (and lost some of my own weight), I still have a lot to learn about healthy living. Which is why I was intrigued by the different cooking approaches offered by this book.I had assumed that with the Heart Associations’ understandable interest in health, that the recipes would be something like “sawdust salad with wheat bran vinaigrette.” Instead, this is the most delicious, contemporary, and okay I’ll admit healthy — but in a good way — cookbook I’ve seen in years. My whole family has loved the recipes I’ve made from it.So far, we’ve slow-cooked Bayou Gumbo and Chicken Korma, microwaved Stuffed “Baked” Apples, blended “Greek” Goddess Salad Dressing and the Peanut Butter and Banana “Ice Cream,” grilled Baja Fish Tacos and Teriyaki Chicken and Vegetable Kebabs, wok-fried Japanese Stir Fry, braised Chicken with 40 Cloves of Garlic, stewed Garden-Fresh Ratatouille, and steamed Thai-Style Chicken Potstickers. Every recipe has been delicious, and I’m happy to get some new and healthy recipes added to our family favorites. Looking forward to trying even more from this cookbook.
