As Marine Interdiction Agents for Customs and Border Protection, the two hunt drug smugglers, human traffickers, and other criminals who hide in the vastness of the waters surrounding southern California.

One night, Finn and Diego track a phantom boat off the Los Angeles coast, but it disappears before they can intercept it. They find a dead body in its wake, ravaged by sharks. Devil's Harbor: A Novel, by Alex Gilly

Review

“Gilly's debut is a real page-turner filled with thrills, chills, and unexpected surprises.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Buy it! Recommend it! Push it on anyone who loves suspense and action served with hard-boiled style! The writing is exuberant yet controlled, the plot is twisty and devious yet easily tracked, the characters are freshly imagined...The boat chases are the best since the early Bond novels, the revelations are startling, and the bourbon scenes make you thirsty.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“Devil's Harbor is a fast-paced, sophisticated thriller, filled with twists, turns and compelling characters that will stay with the reader long after they've read the exciting final pages. Alex Gilly is a writer to be reckoned with - one that knows his territory, whether it is a speedboat trapped in an offshore gale or how to aim a rifle from a pitching deck. This is a book that operates deliciously in the shadows beneath the dark Pacific waters surface and in the darker places in men's hearts. A fine debut that will keep readers up late at night.” ―John Katzenbach, internationally bestselling author

“[A] thrill-a-moment first novel...The ending is an unexpected nail-bitter that crackles with tension.” ―Publishers Weekly

This fast paced story tells of fishing boats, border patrol boats, and other ships at sea tracking drug and gun runners off the coast of California. The characters written by Gilly, both good and bad, are well described and realistic. I enjoyed the true to life characteristics of both the story and characters.POSSIBLE SPOILERS -In the book, bodies are found in shark infested waters and murders abound. A criminal element surfaces which is engaged in harvesting body parts. There is also a thrilling description of a monster storm at sea with huge waves engulfing a boat with people on board.***I liked the storyline and writing style of this novel very much and can't wait to read more of Alex Gilly's work!

Barricklow(Scaramouche) I was pleasantly surprised with this novel. I do like discovering a "new" authors, as I can look forward to their new books. The novel's superb from beginning to end. The ability of the author to place the reader "there" is pitch-perfect; plus the suspense/action starts-up from the get-go/Marine Interdiction Agent Nick Finn peered at the suspect boat, his night-vision goggles tinting her insect-green against the black sea...He had something in his hands. Finn thought it looked like an AK-47, but before he could be sure, the breeze pushed the plume of smoke in front of the guy, obscuring him.The characterization is spot-on, including inner thoughts and motivations; and the complex paradoxes that make us all unique. The plot is genuinely/grizzly realistic. The setting comes straight off the headlines of today. At the heart of the story are the people that have been caught-up on this engineered-drug-war[this reader's opinion/legalize drugs]. The black & white issues become greyer as the reader turns the pages; probing deeper into the characters, consequences, and actions as events unfold toward a climax that is both surprising and yet inevitable.I enjoyed the author dialogue/I keep telling you, honey: it's not the apple that's rotten, it's the barrel. Or/Remember those border-patrol guys in Texas, shot that dope smuggler in the ass? He claimed he was unarmed, they couldn't prove otherwise, they got put away for twelve years. And he admitted he was a dope smuggler[Very-Connected].Also the author's deep analyses, through the character's thought processes were outstanding/They were just pawns in the game, human beings stuck in a broken system that accorded them little human dignity, that treated them as disposable. They were called cheap labor...They were people with out status...The gangsters murdered everyone who opposed them, brutally, spectacularly; because they got away with it. These were the people he was now working with. And also the author delves into the issue of alcoholism/Once the drink had him, he'd done what every alcoholic does one way or another: he'd given it everything that mattered in his life. And then he'd given it his life.Definitely looking forward to Alex Gilly's next novel.

By PattyLouise Devil's HarborByAlex GillyWhat it's all about...Finn and his brother in law Diego are customs and border agents who patrol the waters near Southern California...they are rough and tough and gritty. Finn is married to Diego's sister...an attorney...and everybody gets along and life seems reasonably good. Oh...Finn has alcohol issues, too, but he is not drinking and dealing with them...sort of. One night Finn shoots a drug lord and gets in big trouble and a few days later they find a shark eaten half body of a kid...no less...a wannabe gangbanger...in the ocean...and big big big trouble begins for everyone. Whew! And it gets even worse...but I can't tell you because I do not wish to spoil this gripping thriller for any potential reader! But it's very bad and very sad for Finn and his wife. Then add a mystery woman, tattoos, sharks and a missing kidney...no wonder Finn is drinking again! My thoughts after reading this book...So...what I can tell you is that this is an amazing nail biting fast paced well written thriller. If this is the kind of book you love and are tired of more familiar thriller writers...I say give this book a chance...you won't be sorry! What I loved best...I always love the most dysfunctional one and in this book it was ruggedly handsome Finn...he had so much going against him in this book...I worried that he might never find his way out of these shadows. What potential readers might want to know...I would say that this book is a most perfect vacation book...whether you are hopping onto a plane or just lounging at the pool or beach or lake...this book will carry you away!

An evil entity has hidden the sun, and the world becomes a dark and dreadful place. Biegolmai Davvii, a Saami shaman and one of the eight Guardians of the Four Winds, sends the Lone Ranger, a former US Army Ranger, and Jon Fish, a Marine Drill Instructor, to Machu Picchu to find the evil sorcerer who sacrifices women to acquire the power to control the sun. Jon is the reincarnation of the bodhisattva Akashagarbha, and he has the power to cross time and space. The Ranger is the reincarnation of the bodhisattva Vajrapani and he has the power to control winds and rain, thunder and lightning. But as long as an evil entity controls the vortex at the peak of Machu Picchu, neither man may access their bodhisattva powers and they must climb the mountain as mortals. After a fight with Elman's minions, they are able to halt the sacrifices, but they are unable to capture Yam Elman, the twin brother of Guardian Hadad Elman. Elman escapes and attempts to take control of one of the other vortexes of power. Elman thrives on chaos, and the darkness that encompasses the world sends people into panic. Weird religions spring up overnight, among them Elman's Ministry of Light which promises eternal life and eternal light in return for blind obedience and personal sacrifice. Jon, the Ranger, and two other Guardians—Bryn Helgasdottir, a Valkyrie, and Kisikil Lalake, a wood nymph—attack Elman's church headquarters north of St. Louis at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Elman double-whammies Jon, Bryn, and the Ranger with Vril magic. Kisi turns Vril magic against Elman and frees her companions, but the Ranger hits his head against a tree and loses all memory of Vajrapani. In order to heal the Ranger, restore his memory, and reunite him with Vajrapani, Biegolmai sends the Ranger, Kisi, Bryn, and Kiyari—the reincarnation of an Incan moon priestess who is also the reincarnation of Persephone and Inanna—into the underworlds on a healing journey. Yam Elman has also gone into the underworlds to recruit demons to help him take over the world. In order to find Elman, force him to return the sun and keep him from ascending the world tree with a demon army, the Ranger and his companions must search through all nine underworlds and return their spirits to their mortal bodies within twelve days or remain trapped in the underworlds forever. Guided through the underworlds by Hecate, they encounter demons, serpents, Queen Ereshkegal, King Aidoneus Haides, Snow Queen Hel, and demon Udug Hul. Each of the four companions faces his or her own personal demons in the underworlds. They emerge from the underworlds with greater knowledge and they manage to recover the silver mask of the Moon Goddess, but Elman escapes them.

In It’s Only Love, fate brought Victor and Natasha together and nothing seemed to be able to keep them apart. Not Natasha’s stagnant relationship with Lloyd, nor Victor’s fear of the hurt and disappointment of any loving relationship with a woman. So they began as friends and that allowed them to get to know one another and what they found was a great love between them. But they both find that love is not all that is needed; not even in a fairytale romance. Natasha worries that it all happened too fast, too soon and if it really is as good as it feels? What she doesn’t know is that Victor has wondered the same thing. He wonders whether he’s ready for the heavy commitment his heart so desires with the woman at his side. It seems that fear of commitment runs in the Matthews’ family, because Victor’s sister Rhonda has those same relationship issues. After being cheated on, disrespected and humiliated by men, she has chosen to give up on relationships and focused on family, career and having great sex; when she can find it. But after meeting Randall Washington, Rhonda discovered that sometimes a man really does want more than what you have to offer him between the sheets. So when he suggests that they do something with their clothes on, Rhonda is resistant, damn near hostile to it. Rhonda has to learn to let go of her apprehension in order to experience life’s pleasures. Can they figure it out in time before ruining what is right between them?

There will always be characters you can identify with through their words and in their actions. There will always be a narrative that compliments the movement of the characters and that’s no different here. After falling in love, most people don’t think about the end game. Where do you go from here? But both Natasha and Victor deliberately spent time adjusting to their new found romance and figuring out how to make it last beyond the first spark. I enjoyed the telling and completion of their story and also the beginning of Rhonda and Randall’s tango. Rhonda has a lot of work to do on self and relaxing in the moment. Something so many women can identify with after having been through their share of ups and downs but we must not become hardened to love and neither should Rhonda when a good man wants to be there for her. I wonder more about their path—if there is even a path to explore and that leads me to the salt of the story. Vanessa and Paul. They have been through some self-inflicted battles and I wonder whether marriage was ever really the right move for either of them. They represent what the other couples fear and I like the complexity of all of their situations to show us the stages of love and sometimes heartache.Great romances sometimes start, continue and end with challenges but true love never fails and I don’t see it failing here. Great story, Mr. Glenn.

By Amazon Customer CJackson, Virginia Beach With You was the second part of the story of Victor and Natasha. In this installment, the two lovers are into their relationship and navigating through the getting to know you phase. Victor's still dealing with his need to keep his feeling close to the vest, and Natasha continued to deal with her fear of relationship failure. Neither she nor Victor had a great track record in this department. As Victor and Natasha grew closer together it was nice to see how they chose to listen to their hearts desires. Readers also get to see why Rhonda had such an affinity to be a love-them-and-leave-them-gal, after her failed relationship many years prior. Randall Washington, a divorced father of two young daughters hoped to be the man to change her opinion. Vanessa and Paul continued to build on their recent marriage and deal with old problems with Pauls' infidelity with Bria. And Bria was still hanging around causing trouble for the newlyweds. Overall, with all the characters the story flows well and paints a nice romantic picture. I like Roy Glenn's writing style and subsequently found this story to be worth every page.. This was a nice romantic story of loving someone with your whole heart.

I was born on the prairie and the milk of its wheat, the red of its clover, the eyes of its women, gave me a song and a slogan. Here the water went down, the icebergs slid with gravel, the gaps and the valleys hissed, and the black loam came, and the yellow sandy loam.

"The Old Things Go, Not One Lasts" By The Wingchair Critic The single edition of 'Cornhuskers' (1918) is further evidence that Carl Sandburg's work is best served by 'The Complete Poems of Carl Sandburg,' the most recent edition of which was published in 2003.While the propagandistic 'Chicago Poem' (1916) focused mainly on the plight of the urban poor, 'Cornhuskers,' as its title suggests, is largely a meditation on the life and experience of the prairie farmer during the first quarter of the 20th century.Sandburg was a poet who seemed to find personal meaning largely in the present moment, and thus, while 'Cornhuskers' records and occasionally celebrates the agricultural year and the people who live by it, death, mortality, and the transience of all things is a continuous motif. These themes intermingle freely with a honest, often blunt candor about the violence and sacrifice inherent in survival. The everyman farmer addressed in 'Prairie,' for example, is calmly advised by nature to "Kill your hogs with a knife slit under the ear. Hack them with cleavers. Hang them with hooks in the hind legs."Nor does the poet ignore the savagery of man and all creatures. 'Wilderness' acknowledges that "There is a wolf in me...fangs pointed for tearing gashes...a red tongue for raw meat...and the hot lapping of blood...I sing and kill and work: I am a pal of the world: I came from the wilderness."Sandburg was a poet of observation, and those reflected in 'Cornhuskers' are almost continually pensive: sorrow, loneliness, unfulfilled longing, and human isolation color the Midwestern landscape."The gloaming is bitter," he states in 'Sunset From Omaha Hotel Window,' not only in Omaha, but "in Chicago or Kenosha."Sleeping dogs dream "Not any hate, not any love, not anything but dreams" in 'Three Pieces on the Smoke of Autumn,' unlike man.The tradesman of 'Bricklayer Love' says, "I have thought of killing myself because I am only a bricklayer and you a woman who loves the man who runs a drug store."The speaker in 'Testament' serenely consigns his corpse to the earth, where the "nanny goats and billy goats of the shanty people eat the clover over my grave," for "I have had my chance to live with the people who have too much and the people who have too little and I chose one of the two and I have told no man why."The poet of 'In Tall Grass' offers his bleached skull to the bees so that they may use it to build a honeycomb.'Cool Tombs' addresses the marginality of human accomplishment and celebrity in the face of mortality, whether for Abraham Lincoln, Ulyyses Grant, Pocahontas, or "any streetful of people."In 'Prairie,' Sandburg observes "the past is a bucket of ashes."In one of 'Cornhuskers' most famous entries, 'Grass,' humanity is reminded that everyone and everything are impermanent and eventually forgotten: "I am the grass; I cover all."As in 'Chicago Poems,' politicians, the wealthy, the upper classes, and other leaders of society come in for repeated harsh criticism. "Huntington" in 'Southern Pacific,' though dead in "a house six feet long," still blithely dreams of men addressing him as "Yes, sir."'Palladiums' warns "Speak softly--the sacred cows may hear. Speak easy--the sacred cows must be fed."'Profiteer' describes an honorary statue erected to "one who participated in the war vicariously and bought ten farms" with his spoils. 'Cornhuskers' was written during World War I, and 'The Four Brothers' identifies the "four big brothers" of the title--France, Russia, Britain, and America--as "hunting death."In the vision of 'Cornhuskers,' man's meager hope arises from routine hard work, appreciation of the simple and the commonplace, and acceptance of the cycle of life. 'Caboose Thoughts' states "The sun, the birds, the grass - they know. They get along. We'll get along. It's going to come out all right - do you know?"Sandburg encourages the reader to "Look at six eggs in a mockingbird's nest...look at songs hidden in eggs," and to appreciate, as he has, boys running "barefoot in the leaves" and "farmhands with their faces in fried catfish on a Monday morning."Throughout, Sandburg speaks in the loose, conversational folk tone that was the hallmark of his work. Most of the poems have only a very light structure and appear spontaneously written, so that 'Potato Blossom Songs and Jigs' features lines such as "The story lags. The story has no connections. The story is nothing but a lot of banjo plinka planka plunks."'Cornhuskers' can stand on its own, but works best when considered in immediate conjunction with later volumes 'Smoke And Steel' (1920), 'Slabs of the Sunburnt West' (1922), 'Good Morning, America' (1928), and 'The People, Yes' (1936), making 'The Complete Poems of Carl Sandburg' the ideal vehicle for expressing his increasingly unappreciated vision.

This book demonstrates a poetic style and subject matter that are very much like that of 19th century giant Walt Whitman; is fact, Whitman is even mentioned in one of the poems in this book (specifically, "Interior").Sandburg writes in a direct, vernacular language. He demonstrates an appreciation of the lands, people, and animals of the United States. He pays particular attention to working class life, industrialization, and ethnic diversity. A series of poems deal with American wars from the Revolutionary War to World War I. Throughout, Sandburg's voice is at times ironic, mystical, ecstatic, and/or tender. There are a number of particularly memorable selections in "Cornhuskers." I loved "Wilderness," which begins "There is a wolf in me." "Prayers of Steel" uses remarkable erotic language to explore the use of steel in America's development. Another impressive poem is "Alix," about a champion racing mare.Sandburg writes, "I speak of new cities and new people." In "Cornhuskers," he created one of the first great poetic testaments of the 20th century.

A Collection Of Contrasts By Dave_42 Carl Sandburg (January 6, 1878 - July 22, 1967) in 1919 was one of the second recipients of the Pulitzer Prize for poetry for his collection "Cornhuskers". The collection is divided into several sections including: "Cornhuskers"; "Persons Half Known"; "Leather Leggings"; "Haunts"; and "Shenandoah". Each of the sections has its own feel to it and the poems range from the long "Prairie" and "The Four Brothers" which bookend the entire collection, to the very short, such as "Cartoon". The subject or the poems also contrasts, though one would expect that in most collections. Lastly, time itself has added an additional contrast to the collection which I will discuss later."Cornhuskers" includes poems about life on the great plains of the United States. It opens with the masterful 11-page "Prairie", which is unlike any other poem in the section and only is approached in terms of scope by "The Four Brothers" which closes the collection. The poems in this section often deal with nature and history and the feel of life in the rural plains areas."Person's Half Known" includes poems about people of some renown, though who they are is not always readily apparent. "Chicago Poet" is about himself, "Fire-Logs" is about Nancy Hanks, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, and other people he writes about include the likes of Inez Milholland, Adelaide Crapsey, and others, and one can enjoy a trip through history in learning about the subjects of these poems."Leather Leggings" is an unusual section as it seems to have more to do with the activities of people, though some of the poems don't necessarily fit that loose definition. The poems deal with a very wide variety of professions, activities, and the products of those labors. As an example, "Clocks" deals with a variety of time-pieces and how they are used in different ways and "Flat Lands" deals with those in the real estate profession."Haunts" deals with those feelings and memories which one remembers throughout their life. Here there are poems remembering a love, a special time, one's lost childhood, music, faith, and much more. The last section is "Shenandoah", which contains poems about war, and for whatever reason this section feels even more timeless than the rest of the book. Perhaps that is because this world so seldom knows real peace that one can easily identify with the feelings and images which these poems bring to mind. This a tremendous collection of poems, which are filled with history, feelings, images, and so much more. It has but one weakness, and that is a word which has become so hateful that it pains the reader to run across it at any time, and certainly when reading such wonderful poetry. It appears fewer than 10 times in the book, and yet each time it does it gives one pause. It makes one wish for a new edition to remove it or change it, but at the same time one would never want to lose or change such art. Thus all one can do is to reflect on the mistakes of our past and appreciate how such words and hatred can damage even that which was created for the most benign purpose.

3rd Edition Just Released! No Increase In Cost! Limited Time Offer At This Price! Catch wrestling (or Catch As Can Wrestling) is a bit of an umbrella term that captures several similar grappling arts. Generally speaking, current forms of catch wrestling are jacketless (no gi) arts that allow a wide range of submissions and also honor pins as a way to win a match. It is an extremely effective form of grappling and helped to establish an early form of Mixed Martial Arts. Much like Judo, catch wrestling got its start in the Middle Ages when armored knights would fight one another. The heavy metal armor presented real problems for the attacker, and one solution was to take the knight down and use the extra force of gravity to help defeat the prostrate man. They turned to wrestling traditions that existed in their respective cultures, which included a great deal of techniques for combat situations. Knights were full time soldiers who spent their lives developing and honing martial skills, and as a result the Middle Ages were something of a golden age of European martial arts, and to this day we still have combat manuals written by masters of the time. Getting started in Catch Wrestling can be daunting. But training martial arts is one of the most beneficial things I've ever done, mentally and physically, but getting over the beginner's hump was where a chunk of those benefits come from. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lazy, rushed, uninformative, broad to martial arts and unspecific to catch wrestling By Michael G. Hollandsworth This book is not good. It honestly seems like the person who wrote it has been doing catch wrestling for about 3-6 months and decided to pay for his classes by self-publishing an e-book about it. I learned next to nothing about the philosophy of catch wrestling, the mindset of catch wrestling, or the techniques of catch wrestling. Unless catch wrestling is just a generic broad term that encompasses any kind of highly competitive pugilistic sport. I suppose it's my fault for making assumptions about what was in the book based on the title, subtitle, description, and cover. There are no pictures of techniques, but there are, and I'm not kidding here, links to YouTube videos about how to do the techniques. Because you can't look up stuff on the internet on your own, right?I dunno, I'm not sure what I was expecting here, but as a writer myself, this book reeks of mediocrity and reads like a series of blog posts written by an amateur writer and amateur catch wrestler. If you're BRAND NEW to martial arts, you might find some stuff in this book useful, however the writer fails to establish any credibility or emphasize the importance of some of the more critical things that any martial artists should learn/know. He just plainly states them. Each chapter feels like it was added to give the book the appearance of more depth and the content of each chapter gives the same feeling.

As a curious about this kind of self defense it is great to get a different perspective than the one that I had heard of in terms of the origin of the moves that we are doing in Brazilian Jiu jitsu. This book will teach you a step by step guide of this kind of martial arts.As a woman, this is a new way of learning self defense.Recommendable book.....

Hinge Theory first exfoliated in Smelling Mary (Howling Dog Press, 2008) and from stone this running (Black Widow Press, 2011). Wrack Lariat further emboldens Hinge pioneering by launching four new modules and offering Fusionistic Intercoursing with visual artists past and present. These Intercourses further cement the Robustness that is Hinge, the sheer 'Hygiene' of the Charged Magnetically Explorative. The philosopher Edmund Husserl concluded that "it is essentially impossible for the spatial shape of the physical thing to be given otherwise than in mere one—sided adumbrations." As if defining Hinge itself, Husserl states, "every experiential multiplicity, no matter how extensive, still leaves open more precise and novel determinations of the physical thing." This inability to "complete" a work exacerbated the 20th century artist Alberto Giacometti who insightfully realized "Artistic depiction is not limited by its own empirical deficiencies, but is, by definition, a never-ending process—endlessly painting over what has already been painted, repeatedly scraping away what has already been expunged, only for it to return anew in some different form."The "never-ending process" so frustrating Giacometti is the Elixir of Hinge. In Wrack Lariat we find Hinge Exalting in Multiplicitous Expansionisms Endlessly Mobilizing, cheerfully trumping needs to fixate, to grasp, to en-frame, to conclude. It is fitting that Wrack Lariat ends with an opening: the section "Aperture."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. All good writing has a potential energy—plays and screenplays By Joey Madia To engage with Heller Levinson’s poetry is to make the commitment to immerse. To commit. Reminding me of a combination of the visual–typographic poetry of Vernon Frazer, the fractal approach of Ric Carfagna, and the boundary-pushing poetic theories of Eileen Tabios, Levinson’s barrage of words and forms and breadth of artistic starting places (plasticity of language and its meaning, philosophy, music, visual arts) comes forth from the writer’s inner alchemical furnace into a vortex powered by a girding energy of quantum physics and Eastern spiritual tenets that swirl the material together, where it places on the page, not randomly, but in a molecular–textual structure that one could walk the exploratory halls of for days on end.I am choosing a handful of sections (what Levinson terms “modules”) that were particularly resonant for me. One of the joyful challenges of engaging with poetics as approached by Levinson and the other poets I mentioned in the opening is that the keys of the reader’s own worldviews, literary, performing arts, and philosophical background can be tried in the various locks of the poems with varying degrees of accessibility and resonance. Levinson is particularly erudite and complex in the breadth of material from which he draws, and so the locks are numerous and amenable to the insertion and turning of any number of keys. The first module is called “How Much of / wHoosh.” The energy of this module is motion. Any time a wordsmith can get the immovable type to gather and sustain motion on the page, the entire field of poetics is elevated. All good writing has a potential energy—plays and screenplays, and many forms of poetry. They rely on the actors, viewers, directors, and readers to activate the energy, making it kinetic. Levinson’s poetry is sizzling on the page. Activation is easy. But the ensuing trip, once the vortex is in full pitch, is the reader’s thrill. Using phrases like “Meteoric Velocity,” “momentum,” “rhymetime serpentine,” “eruption,” “seas unwrinkling,” the poems of the wHoosh module exist in mutual states of Being/Becoming and Particle/Wave, with the Reader (or Observer as termed in quantum physics) truly affecting the motion itself, like capillaries in the hand affecting the path of raindrops. This module also incorporates Buddhic koan-like pieces such as “how much of /stillness/races through motion” and “how much of/ circumstance/is/circumstantial,” which offer a still, quiet space; a respite from the whooshing vortex for contemplation and reflection, before carrying on.The next module is titled “moreover hardly sometimes of if ever obviously,” denoting the first word used in the poems in that section (first “moreover,” then “hardly,” etc.). These words are qualifiers—they are words that change the momentum, the direction, the content of our statements. Interestingly and aptly, the last word, “obviously” does not seem to be used (setting the meaning on its ear).Poetics like these give us ideas, like threads or breadcrumbs for the maze-path to new spaces of meaning, to creations of our own, which continues with the third module, “The Corner of __________ & ____________.” Like the mechanism of Rudyard Kipling’s “Just So Stories” (How the __________ got its ____________) the intrepid writer-traveler can absorb what Levinson offers (using a module created by another “Hinger” named Amy J. Huffman) and make intersectional creations of one’s own. This, again, is movement and momentum. Why should the reader be passive? Why should the journey end with the end of the volume? The follow-on module is “Gerundial Geist,” which uses a device where the “particle is initialized by a gerund” [which is a noun made into a verb by adding –ing].Those interested in the history of the Plains Indians will find provoking, challenging pieces in the section titled “Accidentals,” which also holds treasures for those who are drawn to the poets mentioned in the opening, as well as Felino Soriano and Mark Sonnenfeld. The module from which the book takes its name articulates many of Levinson’s goals and ideas about what art is, and what the artist’s aims and responsibilities should be: “Wrack Lariat is meant to suggest the Artistic Mission. A mission compelled to reject all that is stale, handed down,—habituated… intolerant of falsehoods, of the trivially redundant, of the Uninspired Quotidian” (179). This, to me, is a call to the Alchemical in the art. Seeking the nigredo, the prima materia, which is transformed in the crucible of the process through intersections, the bending of language to change the trajectories of meaning, and cross-arts pursuits (this module consists of poetic intersections with the lives and works of Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Picasso as well as with the music of DeBussey). The line “I should be watching the musicians rather than listening” (217) brings to mind the new approaches to music brought into being by John Cage.Levinson’s work launches forward to a new fringe locality from the nexus of quantum physics and Eastern mysticism, the overlaps of which have been well-remarked-upon by Michael Talbot, Fritof Capra, David Bohm, and others—an indication that we need to push much farther than those who have come before if we are to take the active journey with Levinson. Wrack Lariat is the map, with the borders torn off.Two of the three remaining modules in Wrack Lariat, “Dot Soliloquies” and “Linda Lynch,” also hinge from intersections and inspirations with other artists. The message is clear: this is large-scale, life-encompassing work, and the artist in isolation would be a fool to think it can be done alone.

This is the only one that clearly, concisely describes how to do yoga. More importantly, it has dozens of routines (called flows) that combine a number of yoga poses into a coherent workout. Although this is geared towards athletes, I think anyone could benefit from it. Plus Sean's Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/motleyfitness) is a great supplement to this book.

By A I must admit I was a little skeptical about a yoga book but decided to go with this one by Sean Vigue after taking a few of his classes, plus I love his teaching style and inimitable wit ! Am I glad I did as it is an excellent book, the exercises are very clear and easy to follow both from the photographs and excellent descriptions too. Also I love the way the exercises are tailored to personal activity preference. I am a keen swimmer so was pleased about that ! This book is excellent and I would recommend it to any one at any level of fitness.

The lay out of the postures/poses is very easy to follow with photos, concise descriptions, targeted body areas and the sports each pose benefits. I also love the last section of the book that focuses on specific yoga flows with easy to follow photos. This book has helped with both my practice of yoga and getting my body ready and stronger for walking, running and spinning. I loved taking Sean's classes when he was in Florida because of his energy and knowledge. Always enjoyable and his energetic personality really comes through in his book. This book would be great for those who are new to yoga, advanced and anyone in between.

From the Author

  • Chapter 1 "Here's What's Going On With Your Back" starts out by going over the parts of your back you need to know about in order to get it better.  I've included over 30 pictures in this section, so you'll be spending a lot more time looking at pictures than you will reading boring explanations.  Then, after you know about how your back is put together, the chapter explains how the process of spinal stenosis occurs. There are three distinct stages your spine goes through as you get older, and readers might be interested to find out that these changes start with the disc. The chapter ends with some good news though - there are lots of people walking around with spinal stenosis that have NO pain. How can this be? This chapter will tell you - it's more important how your back functions, than how it looks on a X-ray...
  • Chapter 2 "What Will Happen To Your Back Over the Long Run?" looks at what happens to people with spinal stenosis when researchers follow them over time. Readers will be interested in knowing that a good number of scientific studies have shown us that when spinal stenosis patients are followed for years and treated conservatively (without surgery), many actually improve over the long run.
  • Chapter 3 is titled "Tune-Up #1: Making Your Back Much Stronger" and shows you five multifidus strengthening exercises.  If you don't know what a multifidus muscle is, or that's its a key stabilizer of your back, well, you'll know all about it by the end of the chapter - and how to make it stronger fast!
  • Chapter 4 "Tune-Up #2: How to Make Your Back More Flexible" teaches you how to make your back less stiff and more flexible.  It doesn't take a million stretches - just three - and if you do them correctly, you should be able to make your back much less stiff with less than 5 minutes a day of stretching.  Sound too good to be true?  Not if you've read the stretching research I cite in the book...
  • Chapter 5 is titled "Tune-Up #3: How to Improve Your Proprioception".  The latest research is now telling us that people with low back pain have impaired proprioception in their spines.  After reading this chapter, you'll know all the in's and out's of proprioception - and how to improve it!
  • Chapter 6 "Putting It All Together: The Six-Week Program" pulls together all the exercises in the book and puts them in one place so you'll know how to get started. It's here you are told exactly what to do each day, and how many times a day to do it. This chapter contains 6-weeks' worth of exercise sheets so you can keep track of your exercise progress. While the exercises take less than 10 minutes a day to do, making progress with them is the key to getting better - and this chapter will help you do just that.
  • Chapter 7 is "Measuring Your Progress" and contains a handy scale you can use to measure improving back function, and Chapter 8 are the references - the entire book is completely based on published research studies from peer-reviewed journals and randomized controlled trials.
  • At 98 pages, I wrote this book so the reader could finish it in a few hours, and have all the tools they need to improve the function of their back and decrease their pain. Additionally, I have also written it in a little larger print, so those with vision problems will have an easy time reading it.  Not only will these exercises help the person who has spinal stenosis, but they are also great exercises to keep anybody's spine in good shape.

A must-read for anyone with Spinal Stenoss By RKC This book has enabled me to move from frequent shocking sciatic pain to full-out grappling in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu class. Its recommended excercises strengthen the sleeve around the lower spine and increase flexibility. I have added, and would recommend - though I'm no PT or MD - adding a hanging excercise to Mr. Johnson's list: build up to 30 seconds letting your full weight hang straight down from a chin-up bar - and take lots of fish oil. If anyone had said three months ago that I'd be able to return to full movement and not having to treat my lower back with special care in martial arts classes, I'd have said let's be realistic, but it turns out that one really can manage (though not cure) one's own SS, thanks to this clear-thinking and obsessively researching physical therapist!

I was in physical therapy, very confused about why the McKenzie method wasn't working for my lumbar spine. I was in such pain and sciatica that I knew something wasn't right. So I Googled "people who cannot do the McKenzie Method" and "stenosis patients" kept coming up. I remembered having seen the word "stenosis" in my MRI, although I didn't know what it meant at the time. I ordered this book, and it opened up a new world of understanding.First to mention is that usually when I read a PT type book, I skip the anatomy section (and go straight to the recommendations) primarily because anatomy explanations are dry and I don't understand most of it anyway. A large part of this book is about the anatomy of spinal stenosis, and I couldn't put the book down. The explanations are extremely clear, and now is the first time I really understand what is going on with my back and why McKenzie wasn't right for me. I would think that even patients who don't have stenosis would benefit from this understanding as a way to prevent future problems.Just the understanding alone and knowing that there are things I can do to help my particular back was a HUGE relief to me. I quit physical therapy and am waiting until the pain and sciatica dissipate before putting these exercises into action, so I can't comment at this time on my progress, but will try to remember to come back and add more to this review in the weeks to come. This isn't a long book, and the print is very large. For me, that made it even easier to tackle the content. But I think it contain the most concise and direct route to alleviate my back pain from stenosis. Think of the cost of one PT session, and the cost of this book is far less than that!Thank you Jim Johnson. I would love to also read something written by you about ab strengthening or hip arthritis.

Anyone who has been dealing with spine issues, has some idea about the basic anatomy. I almost didn't continue reading. When it got to the part about the multifidus muscle, then it got my attention. I have been battling back problems for over a decade. The last 3 years, I have been to 3 different physical therapists, 4 or more chiropractors, and 3 different orthopedic surgeons. Not a peep about this muscle. He does include studies which I felt lended credit to what he was writing. His exercises and charts at the end of the book also a plus. His realistic approach to the exercises, based on research, made sense to me. I've been through all sorts from the previous "experts" and most didn't help or even made things worse. I'm doing even more research into the multifidus muscle, as I believe for me that my problem is muscular, and is very much fixable if I don't let anyone else screw up anymore areas. No surgery-there's never a guarantee of success, and the patient assumes all the risk.
