With heart-stopping thrills, a Walter White–esque villain, and a fascinating hero, Alex Gilly's Devil's Harbor is a thriller unlike any you have read beforeNick Finn and his partner and brother-in-law, Diego Jimenez, are used to rough water. As Marine Interdiction Agents for Customs and Border Protection, the two hunt drug smugglers, human traffickers, and other criminals who hide in the vastness of the waters surrounding southern California.

One night, Finn and Diego track a phantom boat off the Los Angeles coast, but it disappears before they can intercept it. They find a dead body in its wake, ravaged by sharks. Their investigation into the floater stalls when Finn is accused of using excessive force following the death of a suspected drug smuggler.

Then Diego is murdered―and Finn is the number-one suspect. As he races to find the real killer and save his marriage, Finn is forced to partner with Linda Blake, the desperate captain of the Pacific Belle and mother of Lucy, a very sick little girl, to attempt the one thing he has devoted his life to stopping.

In order to clear his name and save a child's life, Finn must smuggle narcotics by sea into the United States…and avoid the net that his CBP colleagues have cast for him.

Review

“Gilly's debut is a real page-turner filled with thrills, chills, and unexpected surprises.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Buy it! Recommend it! Push it on anyone who loves suspense and action served with hard-boiled style! The writing is exuberant yet controlled, the plot is twisty and devious yet easily tracked, the characters are freshly imagined...The boat chases are the best since the early Bond novels, the revelations are startling, and the bourbon scenes make you thirsty.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“Devil's Harbor is a fast-paced, sophisticated thriller, filled with twists, turns and compelling characters that will stay with the reader long after they've read the exciting final pages. Alex Gilly is a writer to be reckoned with - one that knows his territory, whether it is a speedboat trapped in an offshore gale or how to aim a rifle from a pitching deck. This is a book that operates deliciously in the shadows beneath the dark Pacific waters surface and in the darker places in men's hearts. A fine debut that will keep readers up late at night.” ―John Katzenbach, internationally bestselling author

“[A] thrill-a-moment first novel...The ending is an unexpected nail-bitter that crackles with tension.” ―Publishers Weekly

This fast paced story tells of fishing boats, border patrol boats, and other ships at sea tracking drug and gun runners off the coast of California. The characters written by Gilly, both good and bad, are well described and realistic. I enjoyed the true to life characteristics of both the story and characters.POSSIBLE SPOILERS -In the book, bodies are found in shark infested waters and murders abound. A criminal element surfaces which is engaged in harvesting body parts. There is also a thrilling description of a monster storm at sea with huge waves engulfing a boat with people on board.***I liked the storyline and writing style of this novel very much and can't wait to read more of Alex Gilly's work!

Barricklow(Scaramouche) I was pleasantly surprised with this novel. I do like discovering a "new" authors, as I can look forward to their new books. The novel's superb from beginning to end. The ability of the author to place the reader "there" is pitch-perfect; plus the suspense/action starts-up from the get-go/Marine Interdiction Agent Nick Finn peered at the suspect boat, his night-vision goggles tinting her insect-green against the black sea...He had something in his hands. Finn thought it looked like an AK-47, but before he could be sure, the breeze pushed the plume of smoke in front of the guy, obscuring him.The characterization is spot-on, including inner thoughts and motivations; and the complex paradoxes that make us all unique. The plot is genuinely/grizzly realistic. The setting comes straight off the headlines of today. At the heart of the story are the people that have been caught-up on this engineered-drug-war[this reader's opinion/legalize drugs]. The black & white issues become greyer as the reader turns the pages; probing deeper into the characters, consequences, and actions as events unfold toward a climax that is both surprising and yet inevitable.I enjoyed the author dialogue/I keep telling you, honey: it's not the apple that's rotten, it's the barrel. Or/Remember those border-patrol guys in Texas, shot that dope smuggler in the ass? He claimed he was unarmed, they couldn't prove otherwise, they got put away for twelve years. And he admitted he was a dope smuggler[Very-Connected].Also the author's deep analyses, through the character's thought processes were outstanding/They were just pawns in the game, human beings stuck in a broken system that accorded them little human dignity, that treated them as disposable. They were called cheap labor...They were people with out status...The gangsters murdered everyone who opposed them, brutally, spectacularly; because they got away with it. These were the people he was now working with. And also the author delves into the issue of alcoholism/Once the drink had him, he'd done what every alcoholic does one way or another: he'd given it everything that mattered in his life. And then he'd given it his life.Definitely looking forward to Alex Gilly's next novel.

By PattyLouise Devil's HarborByAlex GillyWhat it's all about...Finn and his brother in law Diego are customs and border agents who patrol the waters near Southern California...they are rough and tough and gritty. Finn is married to Diego's sister...an attorney...and everybody gets along and life seems reasonably good. Oh...Finn has alcohol issues, too, but he is not drinking and dealing with them...sort of. One night Finn shoots a drug lord and gets in big trouble and a few days later they find a shark eaten half body of a kid...no less...a wannabe gangbanger...in the ocean...and big big big trouble begins for everyone. Whew! And it gets even worse...but I can't tell you because I do not wish to spoil this gripping thriller for any potential reader! But it's very bad and very sad for Finn and his wife. Then add a mystery woman, tattoos, sharks and a missing kidney...no wonder Finn is drinking again! My thoughts after reading this book...So...what I can tell you is that this is an amazing nail biting fast paced well written thriller. If this is the kind of book you love and are tired of more familiar thriller writers...I say give this book a chance...you won't be sorry! What I loved best...I always love the most dysfunctional one and in this book it was ruggedly handsome Finn...he had so much going against him in this book...I worried that he might never find his way out of these shadows. What potential readers might want to know...I would say that this book is a most perfect vacation book...whether you are hopping onto a plane or just lounging at the pool or beach or lake...this book will carry you away!
