Laura Glück Radicevic is a native Croatian who is also fluent in English and German- she plays equally well on piano and guitar and has written her own music with lyrics. I was impressed with her dedication to her arts and her willingness to continue her education in these fields. Aside from a beautiful voice, she is an extremely likable person. I first encountered her as lead in Karl Jenkins Songs of Sanctuary #1- or Adiemus as it is more commonly known- haunting. My experience with poetry- especially the poetry of Scandinavia, Homeric Greece, and Virgil's Rome has prompted me to experiment- not only with the languages of the dead, but also revisiting them since I have retired a second time. I have found that studying these ancient tongues that my life and my writing have been truly enriched. I will continue to experiment- bringing ancient verse forms into contemporary poetry.

Poems of Love and Living By George Cast Tony Demarest has captured in this volume's poems the musical, spiritual, and emotional essence of the music of the Laura, the Croatian Singer. The poems offer an insight into the power of music, the vitality of youth, the beauty of a young woman, and the lament and desire of an older man as he experiences all of these. The "Other Poems" offer a view of the simple yet fleeting pleasures of marriage and domestic life--the relaxation found in a garden, the companionship of a dog, the yearning for a retreating love, and the temporary yet beautiful images and objects that comprise the particulars of one's daily life. This is a volume of poetry that will speak to everyone.

Memorable afternoon reading "A Croatian Singer and Other Poems" By Susan Wolhandler I just spent a memorable afternoon reading Tony Demarest's poems in the collection " A Croation Singer and Other Poems".. Demarest presents words and thoughts with a purity and clarity that the reader is taken through a little vignette- a beginning, a middle and an end- in beautiful rhythmic tone. Also, the reader is treated to some laugh out loud moments. "She Dog" tells a story of the authors' timid relationship to his dog evoking all sentimental thoughts of a pup-"he would curl up beneath my arm as I watched television". Then he goes on to comment on the dog's farting and then death. The reader is then introduced to the new dog- a female- who is completely different to the other dog. - "She consumed with unsightly hygienic licking, clawing and sniffing". We then read the poet's self chiding note-" what could I possibly know of a lady dog's need to be hygienic" and after reflection in the final verse of the important things in life like the earlier " licking, clawing and sniffing" , he ends with a hilarious "Woof". The reader has a good laugh and a good thought. Other poems show his lyricism. "Lavender" transports one very swiftly to the south of France. Demarest's poems speak to the reader directly. One quickly grasps his images, understands the story line, and hears the music of his words. Oh, don't doubt there are many poems that are filled with Hellenic references that show the classical training that Demarest brings to his work.. However, for this reader, it is a simpler appreciation of his poetry that speaks to words that are put together with clarity to prompt, thought, prompt memory, prompt a smile for reflection and at times and outright laugh.Enjoy this poetry collection.

Demarest writes, “the fine thing about love is its/ possibility to be reborn” and, in this book, it is. These poems are invitations to engage in life—from enjoying raspberries, to gelato, to women, wine, and music. In every poem, the poet touches on how to feel intensely alive, as he asks, “is it the pull back and rush/ of the sea--/or is it the tapping/ of the rush of my own blood”? The excitement of new love and the discovery of old loves are found in Demarest’s spare style of well-crafted clarity in which nearly every poem ends in the shock of a startlingly exact simile or symbol.Demarest is sensitive to sound and sensuous imagery as he writes about age looking at youth and at itself and the endless desires of the heart where, as in his poems, winter melts into spring. These are poems one wants to read and reread for the unfolding depths of feeling they reveal. I read lots of books of contemporary poetry, and I loved this book.
