Summer's List, by Anita Higman

Review

"Anita Higman writes beautiful fiction that really reaches readers where they are. Summer's List is no exception. Summer's Granny Snow has written a list that she wants Summer to accomplish--including finding an old friend, take a hot air balloon ride, fall in love with a dog, right an old wrong, and kiss someone you love. There are other items on the list, but this gives a good start to the list. Granny has been holding something back from Summer--she's dying of congestive heart failure and there is nothing that can be done about it. She wants Summer to do these things in order to find out what God has planned for her.

In reconnecting with a friend, the friend on Granny's mind is Martin Langtree--a friend from Summer's childhood who was adopted after his mother died and Summer lost track of him. Then Granny wanted Martin to accompany Summer on the quest of completing the list. Granny knew that Summer would need someone sympathetic to help her through some rough times coming up, and it wouldn't be the fiance she just broke up with.

Martin lives behind his brothers in a caretaker's cottage on his parents' estate. His brothers live in the big house and all three are somewhat happy with the arrangement. The only mystery is where their parents are. Desmond and Ivan don't care for Martin and Martin is not sure why there is such animosity. The brothers tried all their lives to get their father's approval while Martin was working for their mother's approval. None of them got what they wanted while they were growing up, and that added to the family dysfunction.

This is the setup for Summer's List. Working through animosities and bringing healing to the characters is one of the tasks Anita put in front of herself in writing this novel. Her characters are empathetic, with their own set of foibles and warts while trying to find their way through life's difficulties. Her settings are whimsical and totally complement the plot. The plot pacing is quite comfortable--neither too fast nor too slow. It was quite a delight to read Anita's latest offering. Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a list of adventures to keep you intrigued.

My thanks to Moody Publishers for allowing me to read and review this book."

"Summer's List is a sweet, touching read. Summer set aside her own dreams to care for others and although she did this she has been content with her life and how it is turning out. However, one night her life is completely turned upside down - Summer is suddenly single, she finds out devastating news from her grandmother and she is given a list on gold paper.

I realty enjoyed this book, the storyline, the characters, how nicely the story flowed and everything that was woven into the story. This is a quick read as you are not going to want to put it down as you will become completely immersed in the story and in Summer's life and fulfilling the list."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Intriguing concept By Becky R. When I first heard about Summer's List, I was intrigued. I love reading about older heroines, and the bucket list concept combined with a long-lost best friend sounded fun and romantic. And it was, some of the time. However, I really struggled to connect with Summer's List. I think there are several reasons for this: *The dialog often comes off as stilted and unnatural. I don't think I've met anyone who speaks quite like Summer, Martin, and Granny, and their conversations tended to make me feel removed from the story. *The novel is dialog heavy and description light. This wouldn't be such a problem if the dialog was more natural, but because I didn't particularly enjoy the dialog, the lack of description only further removed me from the story. *Martin's brothers are horrible at best and psychotic at worst. The resolution with them near the end of the novel really seemed too good to be true. *A few things aren't explained fully, like Summer's parents' deaths and Martin's parents' abandonment. I definitely would have liked more information and, in the case of Martin's parents, a more thorough resolution.I did enjoy certain aspects of the novel, though. I loved the list that Summer had to complete, especially the hot air balloon ride. That scene, as well as the events directly following, really tugged at my heart. Martin was completely endearing, and I enjoyed watching him rekindle his friendship (and more) with Summer. I also enjoyed the mystery of Martin's parents--both biological and adoptive.I wish that I had liked Summer's List more, but I just didn't connect with the majority of the novel. I do think that many readers will enjoy it, but it wasn't the novel for me. 2-1/2 stars.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Litfuse Publicity Group. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I could so relate to much of the brother relationship, being from a family of 5 boys, 1 girl.In Summer's List, Granny Smith (not an apple) has a `bucket list' but it is oddly for her Granddaughter Summer, not herself who is in her final months of living. Unfortunately the bookstore Granny began and passed to Summer was also less than robust. At Granny's insistence, Summer is off on an adventure--perhaps a new beginning, completing the list. Miracles can happen. After all, the list was bathed in Granny prayer.First item was to find an old childhood friend Martin. He is located behind a grass-green hobbit door, and a part of a brother set that is "bizarre", "theatre of the absurd", "beyond dysfunctional", all book quotes. Of course much happens. Readers get a trio of protagonists with good character development.I liked this Anita Higman life-quests story better than "The Bucket List" and I enjoyed that in the cinema so much I also bought the DVD. Several paragraphs appeared in this story's text that caused me to pause, reread, and ponder the depth in what had been written. Most often they were points made regarding faith. I like that. So this was a combo of Christian inspiration, romance, and mystery, with bits of humor. A book loaded.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting characters, beautiful writing By Heidi Reads... There's a kind of floating quality to the narrative in this book. It's told mostly from Summer's perspective (with some from Martin's POV), and it's as if she's slightly disconnected from her own experiences. She is not your run-of-the-mill contemporary female, in fact with her slightly formal yet fanciful dialogue, she seems to be from a much earlier era. She and Martin are both described as gentle souls, different from their peers, which is why their friendship is so timeless. I loved how after a twenty year separation, they fell right back into being best friends. The list from her Granny serves as catalyst to reunite them, but I was surprised to find that Martin's dysfunctional siblings and family secrets take center stage with an air of intrigue. Overcoming hurts from the past, forgiveness, grief, and pursuing a fulfilling life purpose are themes that make this a special book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I especially loved the scene with the hot air balloon ride since that's at the top of my own bucket list and it was described so beautifully!(Thank you to Litfuse Publicity and River North Publishing for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review)

It's become the norm to complain that we're always tired. In Dr. Holly Phi llips' Exhaustion Solution, Dr. Holly aims to end this accepted state of exhaustion and send a message to readers that they do not have to be drained of energy just because they have a demanding job, a family, or an active social life―or all three. She also explains the insidious nature of fatigue, educating readers on the havoc that persistent tiredness wreaks on the body and mind, from weight gain and cognitive impairment to even a higher risk of heart attack and stroke.

Dr. Holly's passion for the subject stems from the quest to cure her own constant weariness―which she struggled with for more than 20 years―as well as the countless complaints of chronic tiredness she hears from patients each day in her internal medicine practice. While a few readers might find a link between their fatigue and a medical condition such as chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia, Dr. Holly knows that many more will discover that diet, exercise, and sleep habits are contributing to their lack of energy.

This guide will help readers understand their exhaustion, rule out any underlying illnesses, correct any allergies or hormonal issues that may be contributing to extreme tiredness, and incorporate lifestyle factors and alternative therapies that will improve overall energy. Clear, comprehensive, and practical, Dr. Holly Phillips' Exhaustion Solution shines a bright light on an issue many people have simply accepted―but that they don't have to any longer.

Wright I bought this after seeing a TV news segment with the author; neither on TV nor on Amazon's description does it mention that when you start reading, it's solely discussing women's fatigue (and in the word "women" present in about 1/2 of all sentences) Uh, men get tired too. I'm only partway into the book, may edit the review if the latter parts are different.EDIT: I got through about 150 pages and gave up; no improvement. Review remains at two stars.Basically: Eat right, exercise right, get some sleep, get checked out for any diseases. There -- I saved you eighteen dollars.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Seems like it really might help By Joyce C Although the book addresses women younger than I with husband, children and job, I still have found things to try as I've read. I'm not finished yet, but I've dropped a couple prescription and so far no harm but monitoring and I'm adding some food to my menu all to try her early ideas. I'm purposely reading slowly so I don't jump into too many changes too quickly. It's easy to recognize the areas that do not pertain to you individually and you can scan or even skip if you know it doesn't pertain. Otherwise, it's easy and interesting reading.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Not so much for guys By John I bought this book after hearing the author on TV. I did not realize it is intended for female readers. I read it anyway and did get some value from it (I am a guy). I bought another copy for my wife and she was delighted. If you have problems with finding enough energy to get through the day you may profit from reading this book.

Review

From Reviews of the Book:

“This text gives a good overview of the issues involved for test development and the types of settings in which tests are used. While it's geared toward counselors, I have felt that there is good applicability for graduate students in Ed Psych and in Higher Ed Admin . . . . I also REALLY liked the supplemental instructional materials that come with the text. I found the PowerPoint presentations a useful way to think about preparing for my lectures . . . . These materials helped provide a concrete path to give the students the context they desired. I also liked the case studies that are provided. The examples were very useful and I integrated them frequently into my class.”

–Diane Kelly-Riley, Washington State University

“[This] book is impressive. Clearly written and well-articulated, the authors thoroughly cover the breadth and depth of mental health assessment. They begin each chapter by informing the readers what they should learn, which is a powerful yet subtle way to set the stage for students. Major themes are covered and many sections are concluded with cogent case examples that nicely illuminate the nuances of mental health assessment. The aggregate of this well written book provides a wealth of useful information to the beginning student, clinical educator, or seasoned counselor . . . . This book more than stands up to other texts. Something that particularly stands out . . . vis-a-vis other books is the mental status exam and suicide assessment sections . . . . I like the writing style. It is not too esoteric, not too simplistic. I believe it's the perfect writing style for master's level students.”

–Anthony Tasso, Farleigh Dickerson University

“Key strengths clearly include the iterative process that has allowed this manuscript to become one of the foremost educational assets of facilitating assessment in counseling . . . . [The] exercises help elevate this manuscript into a league of its own. [The authors have] a keen ability . . . to outline very dense and complex material in a very readable, teachable, and meaningful way.”

From the mesh panties coming home from the hospital (been there) to tending to live in the future (if this happens then I will be happy) I found myself nodding along at every chapter. If you are a wife or mother you should read this book. It is a quick read and a great reminder that we should appreciate the now, and more importantly, appreciate ourselves.

"I can find you your soul mate in five dates." Dr. Jake Lennox took that bet from his best friend, nurse Anna Adams. And then he insisted on returning the favor. After all, he's a commitment-phobic bachelor, while Anna wants the wedding ring and the white picket fence. So why can't he find her Mr. Right while she finds him Ms. Right Now? Now, admittedly, in small-town Celebration, Texas, the dating pool is shallow. And Anna and Jake's picks for each other are either too small or too tall, too old or too bold. Still, they're determined that by dates number five, both of them will be diving headfirst into marriage. So why do they suddenly seem to think it could be with each other?

Anna Adams parked her yellow VW Beetle in Jake Lennox's driveway, grabbed her MP3 player and took a moment to make sure it was loaded and ready to go.She was about to hold an intervention and music—just the right song—was the key component of this quirky job.Today, she was going to save Jake, her lifelong best friend, from himself. Or at least from drowning in the quicksand of his own sorrow. This morning, Celebration Memorial Hospital had been abuzz with rumors that Jake's girlfriend, Dorenda, had dumped him. Anna might've been a little miffed that she'd had to hear about his breakup through the nursing staff grapevine, but the sister of one of Doren-da's friends was an LPN who worked the seven-to-three shift at the hospital and she'd come in positively brimming over with the gossip.Jake had been scarce today. He hadn't been around for lunch. Another doctor had done rounds today. When she'd tried to phone Jake after work, the call had gone to voice mail. The radio silence was what made Anna worry. She hadn't realized that he'd been so hung up on Miss Texas. That's what everyone called Dorenda, even though no one was sure if she'd actually held the title or if she'd gotten the nickname simply because she was tall and beautiful and looked like she should've worn a crown to her day job. Poor schlubs like Anna did well to make it to their shifts at the hospital wearing mascara and lipstick.Anna wasn't sure what the real story was. When Jake had a girlfriend, he tended to disappear into the tunnel of love. Or at least he never seemed to bring his girlfriends around her. And Dr. Jake Lennox usually had a girlfriend.Anna didn't celebrate Jake's breakups, but she had to admit she did relish the intervals between his relationships, because, for as long as she'd known him, that was when she'd gotten her friend back. Sure, they usually saw each other daily at the hospital. It was not as if he completely disappeared. But in those times between relationships, he always gravitated to her.She would take the spaces in between any day. Because those spaces ran deeper than the superficial stretches of time he spent with the Miss Texases of the world.Anna rapped their special knock—knock, knock-knock, knock, knock—on Jake's front door, then let herself in.He never locked the door, but then again, they never waited to be invited into each other's homes. "Jake? Are you here?"Really, she wasn't surprised when he didn't answer. In fact, she had a pretty good idea of where he was. So, she closed the door and let herself in the backyard gate and followed the mulch path down to the lake, the crowning jewel of his property.Yep, if he was back here brooding, it clearly called for an intervention or, as they'd come to call it over the years, the Sadness Intervention Dance. It was their private ritual. Whenever one of them was blue about something, the other performed the dumbest dance he or she could come up with for the sole reason of making the other person smile. The dance was always different, but the song was always the same: "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin.Jake had invented it way back in elementary school. Gosh, it was so long ago—back when the song had just hit the airwaves—she couldn't even remember what she'd been upset about that had compelled him to make a fool of himself to jolt her out of it. But it stuck and stayed with them over the years and now, even though they were both in their thirties, it was still their ritual. The SID was as much a part of them as all those New Year's Eves their families had rung in together or all those Fourths of July at the lake they'd shared. Back in the day, the mere gesture was always enough to push the recipient out of his or her funk. Or, on the rare occasion that it didn't, the SID was the kickoff of the pity party and the guest of honor was officially put on notice that he or she had exactly twenty-four hours to get over whatever was bringing him or her down. Because whatever it was, it wasn't worth the wasted emotion.Nowadays, it was usually performed at the end of a love affair, as was the case today and the time that Jake had basically saved her life when her marriage had ended—metaphorically speaking, of course. But then again, he was a doctor. Saving lives was second nature to him.Love was no longer second nature to Anna.Sure, once upon a time, she'd believed in true love. She'd believed in the big white dress and the happily-ever-after. She'd believed in spending Saturday nights snuggling on the couch, watching a movie with her husband. She'd believed in her wedding vows, especially the part where they'd said 'til death do us part and forsaking all others. From that day forward, the promises she and Hal had made were etched on her soul. Then it all exploded right in front of her face. After nearly four years of marriage, she discovered Hal, who had also looked her in the eyes and made the same vows on their wedding day, had been sleeping with his office manager. That was when Anna had stopped believing in just about everything. Well, everything except for the one person in the world who had ever been true to her: Jake Lennox.Jake had been her first friend, her first kiss, and the first guy to stick around after they realized they were much better friends than anything more. He'd never stopped believing in her. After finding out about Hal's infidelity, the only thing Anna had wanted to do was to numb the pain with pints of Ben and Jerry's and curl up into the fetal position in between feedings. Jake, however, was having none of that. He'd arrived on her doorstep in San Antonio and pulled her out of her emotional sinkhole and set her back on her feet. Then one month ago, after the divorce was final, he'd come back to San Antonio, single-handedly packed Anna's belongings and moved her to Celebration. He'd even helped her find a house and had gotten her a nursing job at Celebration Memorial Hospital. But before he'd done any of this, he'd done the SID.There he stood: a tall, handsome thirty-four-year-old man doing the most ridiculous dance you could ever imagine to "Don't Worry, Be Happy."Was it any wonder that Anna felt duty-bound to be there for him on a day like today? It was her turn to perform the SID. As humiliating as it was—well, that was the point. Anna was fully prepared to make a colossal fool of herself. The gardenia bushes were in full bloom. Their heady scent mixed with the earthy smell of the lake perfuming the humid evening air. She swatted away a mosquito who had decided she was dinner.Instinct told her she'd find Jake on the dock, most likely sitting on the ground with his feet in the water and a beer in his hand. Her intuition didn't let her down. There he sat, with his back to her, exactly as she had imagined. His lanky body was silhouetted by the setting sun. She could just make out his too-long brown hair that looked a little mussed, as if he'd recently raked his fingers through it. He was clad in blue jeans and a mint-green polo shirt. A symphony of cicadas supplied the sound track to the sunset, which had painted the western sky into an Impressionistic masterpiece in shades of orange, pink and blue.A gentle wind stirred, rippling the lake water and providing welcome relief to the oppressive heat.Obviously, Jake hadn't heard her coming.Good. The element of surprise always helped with the SID.She took advantage of the moment to ready herself, drawing in a couple of deep breaths and doing some shoulder rolls. With one last check of the volume on her MP3 player, she pushed Play and Bobby McFer-rin's whistling reggae strains preempted the cicadas' night song.Jake's head whipped around the minute he heard the music. Then he turned the rest of his body toward her, giving her his full attention.Anna sprang into action attempting to do something she hoped resembled the moonwalk. Thank goodness she didn't have to watch herself and the shameless lengths she was going to tonight.Once she'd maneuvered off the grass and was dancing next to him on the dock, she broke into alternate moves that were part robot and part Charleston and part something…er…original. As she danced, trying her best to coax a full-on smile from him, she tried to ignore the sinking feeling that maybe he'd been more serious about Dorenda than the others. That his most current ex had sent him into a Texas-sized bad humor. She reminded herself that was exactly why she was here today. For some quality time with her best bud. To bring him out of his post-breakup funk. She knew she looked ridiculous in her pink nurse's scrubs that were slightly too big and clunky white lace-up shoes, but Jake's initial scowl was beginning to morph into a lopsided smile, despite himself. She could actually see him trying to fight it.Oh, yeah, he was fighting it, but he couldn't fool her. She knew him much too well.In fact, it only made her unleash the most ridiculous of her dance moves: the sprinkler, the cotton-swab, and the Running Man. Dignity drew the line at dropping down onto her stomach and doing the worm. Although that move hadn't been below Jake a month ago when he'd been there after she'd signed her divorce papers. That intervention had been a doozy and a true testament to the depth of their friendship. But he wouldn't have to perform another intervention for her anytime soon. After losing herself and getting burned so badly, Anna wasn't in any hurry to get involved again. For now, she was happy to serve as Jake's intervener.Sprinkler-two-three-four, cotton-swa^-two-three-four, Running Man-two-three… She was just getting into a groove, ready to transition from the Running Man back to the robot when, in the middle of possibly the best sequence yet, her foot hit an uneven plank on the dock, causing her to lose her balance. She saw the fall coming in slow motion and she would have face-planted if not for Jake's quick reflexes. Instead of kissing the dock, she found herself safe in the strength of his strong arms, looking up into his gorgeous blue eyes.Anna smelled good. The kind of natural good that made him want to pull her closer, bury his face in her neck and breathe in deeply. But this was Anna, for God's sake.He couldn't do that.He respected her too much and owed her so much more than that.Especially after she'd gone to such crazy lengths to cheer him up. Did he dare tell her that he really didn't need cheering up? Not in the way she thought he did. Sure, Dorenda had ended things, but the breakup had come as more of a relief than anything. Before he did something stupid that would be awkward for both Anna and him, he set her upright and took a step back, allowing both of them to reclaim their personal space."That was graceful," he said, hoping humor would help him regain his equilibrium."You know me," Anna said. "Grace is my middle name." Actually, it really was. "I aim to please. How are you doing, Jake? You okay?"Her long auburn hair hung at her shoulders in loose waves. Her clear, ivory skin was virtually makeup-free. She had this look in her blue eyes that warmed him from the inside out.He tried not to think about the strange impulse he'd had just a minute ago, an impulse that lingered even if he was trying not to acknowledge it."I'm great," he said. "Want a beer? I'd like to toast your latest choreography. You're getting really good at it. I'll give your Running Man a nine-point-five. I have to take off a half point since you didn't stick the landing."She swatted him and quickly crossed her arms in front of her."Yes, I'd love a beer. Thank you. I need one after that."He smiled. "Come on. Let's go back up to the house. I have five of a six-pack in the fridge."She was eyeing him again. "Well, good. I was afraid that maybe you'd been at home all day drowning your sorrows.""I was seeing patients all day. In case you haven't noticed, I usually don't take off midweek to go on a bender."He and Anna both worked at Celebration Memorial Hospital, but she was an OB nurse on the third-floor maternity ward and he was a hospitalist on the general medical-surgical floors. Unless they sought each other out, their paths usually didn't cross at work."I must say, you're taking this awfully well," she said."What?""The breakup. If I didn't know better, I'd swear that you were fine.""Do I act like I'm not fine?""Well, no. That's what I just said. You seem remarkably unfazed by Miss Texas's departure. Sorry, by Dorenda's breaking up with you."He pulled open the back door for her and stepped aside so she could enter the house first."Dorenda was a great woman, but our relationship had run its course. I'll miss her, but it was time to move on."He shrugged and stepped inside behind her."Are you telling me that you broke up with her?"Throwing her a glance over his shoulder as he walked toward the kitchen, he said, "No, she's the one who dropped the bomb. Actually, it was more of an exploding ultimatum. I saw it coming a mile away."He reached into the fridge, grabbed a beer and twisted off the bottle cap."She gave you an ultimatum? Really? Well, but then again, how long were the two of you together?""Four or five months or so. Do you want a mug? I have some in the freezer.""Yes, please. Had it really been five months? I mean, I've only been back a month."He nodded as he poured the beer down the inside of the mug, careful to create just the right amount of foam on top. "She reminded me of that more than a few times last night. She was talking five-year plans that involved marriage and kids and bigger houses. She kept saying she needed some assurance about our future, needed to know where we were going. I'm not going to lie to her. I enjoyed her company, but I wasn't going to marry her."He handed the beer to Anna."Why not?" Anna asked. "She was beautiful. You seemed like you were really into her."Jake nodded. "She was nice. Pretty. But…I couldn't see myself spending the rest of my life with her. That's the bottom line."Anna squinted at him, her brows drawn together, as she sipped her beer."What's wrong? Is the beer not good? You don't have to drink it if you don't like it."She set down the mug on the kitchen counter. "No, I like it. But I have two questions for you.""Okay. Shoot.""First question. If you're fine with everything, how come you let me keep dancing and make a fool of myself?"Her voice was stern. He laughed out loud. He couldn't help it. "Are you kidding? Watching you was the most fun I've had in months. No way was I going to stop you. For the record, you didn't make a fool of yourself. You're adorable. In fact, you'd been away so long down there in San Antonio, I'd almost forgotten how adorable you are."She rolled her eyes, but then smiled."So happy to have cheered you up," she said."What's the second question?" he asked. She looked at him thoughtfully for a long moment.

Jake and Anna have been friends all their lives, though they hadn't seen much of each other the last few years. When Anna's marriage ended he encouraged her to move back to Celebration and their friendship continued. When Jake breaks up with yet another girlfriend, Anna tells him he's dating the wrong women. She bets him she can find one that will stick around. Jake turns around and insists on finding the right one for her too.Jake is okay with not getting serious with any woman. He lets them know up front that he's not interested in marriage. Jake's opinion of marriage is colored by the example set by his parents and he wants no part of it. On the other hand, Anna, in spite of her failed marriage, still wants a husband and children. Each of them is certain they can find the right person for the other. It was fun to watch these two try to fix up the other while attempting to deny their own feelings. They are so comfortable with each other, yet at the beginning they don't see that they belong together. I loved seeing how everyone around them sees them as a couple, yet they deny it. Things start to change as they start noticing each other as more than friends. There's an attraction that flares up between them that surprises them both. When they act on it, things change between them. Anna is afraid that it has ruined their friendship. She's finally realized that she loves him, but knows his views on marriage. She feels that their friendship is all she can salvage and doesn't want to lose it. Jake also realizes that he loves Anna, but feels that he's no good for her because of his views. It takes an unexpected loss to open his eyes to what he is throwing away.I loved the interactions between Jake and Anna. Their friendship was longstanding and their relationship showed it. I really had to laugh at their tradition of the SID (Sadness Intervention Dance). It was fun but also somewhat painful to see them go on their dates, wondering why they just weren't working out. I loved Jake's big moment at the end, and how he pulled it off.

"Friends to Lovers" is one of my favorite themes - so obvious to everyone else, but they remain clueless. Love watching their denial and excuses and fighting their downhill battle to resist each other! And that ending - I wanted a Jake!!This is such a great series, with unique & engaging characters and "fall in love' romance. And with each book, I add a few more best friends.Have to agree with Shakespeare - "The lady doth protest too much, methinks.""You know I can't date Jake. He's my friend. He's always been my friend and that's all we will ever be."

Reflection, by Lynn Yvonne Moon

About the Author Lynn Yvonne Moon is the American author of the successful Agency Series. Lynn created the concept of The Agency in the 1990's and wondered what would be the implications if government power and money was unlimited. Lynn has worked for both State and Federal Government since the 1990's and uses her long reaching personal experiences to captivate her audience with realistic stories of political corruption and black Government espionage. Her first novel, “When Souls Collide” introduces the reader to the ultimate power of The Agency. The second novel, “What Rings True”, awakens The Agency to the ramifications of never-ending political power. “Dysfunctional Bloodline” traces the steps of a family serial killer out for revenge. Her fourth novel, “In the Defendant's Chair” shocked her readers by exploring the controversial subject of genetic tampering. And her fifth novel, “Reflection” explores the minds of the young combining it with political corruption. Lynn's research has taken her to extreme government locations and down dangerous and mysterious paths. Through her personal associations, Lynn examines every document and asks every question imaginable to uncover the truth. It's those truths that come out in her books. Lynn holds a Master of Public Administration from Troy State University and is currently working on her Masters of Fine Arts from Lindenwood University. She has over thirty years of experience working within the political environment of both Federal and State government. She has held various positions as both a government and industry employee where she dealt with and fought corruption from both sides of the fence. (Lynn Yvonne Moon)

Reflection is in interesting tale about aliens, universes, planets, and forbidden romances. In it, we follow Journey as she discovers a whole new way of life with her father after her mother dies. The plot and the overall premise of this story had so much potential. I had no expectations when I started reading, and so through all the flaws, I still found enjoyment. There were some great descriptions, build-ups, action scenes, and there were a lot of points where I had hope for character development. I didn't feel the urge to never put it down, but I still liked reading, even if it was only because I wanted to know how it would end and if anything would be solved. The author came up with some wonderful twists. I never saw some of them coming. There were situations full of angst and fear, and while they usually ended up with our MC having a temper tantrum, they were still enjoyable to read. The different emotions and experiences are probably what saved this book from a DNF. Each new place Journey and Takoda explored had something interesting happen in it, and while it may not have ended in anything overly spectacular, it was still intriguing made the book more enjoyable. I loved learning about the other planets and species, the different foods and cultures and beliefs. I just wish we had more on that. Journey's family stuck by her through everything. That was a key point for me, because I knew that no matter what happened, she would still be supported and loved. I ended up predicting a lot of things that never happened, and one of them was a war of sorts that ended in many deaths. Another was that Journey would be Queen and take care of her people, but had to leave her family without a word to do so. Neither happened, but if they had, it was nice to know that she would have a family who loves her no matter what. However, I had a huge problem with this book. Many twists and situations happened that I love, they were built up well and I definitely couldn't wait to see how they would be solved. But that's just it. Nothing gets solved. Every problem or troublesome twist they experienced was essentially ignored. Journey's romance with Takoda is forbidden (and instant), and they fought it at first (barely), but once they stopped fighting it's like they didn't even care any more. Their family found out, people at their school probably figured it out, people on other planets knew, and yet they aren't reprimanded, they aren't tortured or punished or killed for breaking one of the most important laws. Instead, Journey's family decides a simple way to solve it, even though they never actually did it: change the rule. Boom. Problem not solved. They go to another planet to do some work and what happens? They find things out about the ancients and the oppressed, but they ignore it because they realize they're not supposed to know about it. They literally do nothing but claim to want to make things better, while ignoring all the important problems. These problems were well executed, well written, and were serious issues that I enjoyed reading about so much that I wanted them to be solved and freed and fixed. But the solutions never came. Journey annoyed me. At first it was okay because with all the screaming and the crying and the tone of her character, I thought she was 10 or 12. Nope. She's 16. She yells a lot, cries and screams and demands, she's not very understanding, and she's rash and impulsive. At first, it seemed like she had a kind heart and like she could connect with anyone, considering her time at the graves. But after realizing a few important things, she demands answers and threatens people to get them. How can she think that's alright? How can they be okay with her treating them as such and act as if she's the loveliest person in the world? She also runs from literally every argument or embarrassing situation unless she's alone with Takoda. Overall, Reflection had a lot of promise, and it did not shy away from problems or twists. But with no solutions and an annoying character, it fell flat.

Young Adult SFR By Anna M. ***Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a free copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.***Journey's mother dies. She and her little sister and picked up by their estranged father to live with him. Journey quickly realizes their father's "cabin in Colorado" isn't on Earth at all, but in the Fornax Galaxy billions of lightyears from everything she ever knew--or so she thinks.Upon arrival she meets her true love and discovers a family and history she never knew existed. They weave through conspiracies, betrayals, aliens and bizarre talents even as they learn to trust and grow together.Importantly, this book was written for teens, possibly even 11-12 yr olds, though I couldn't find anything that listed an age group on the author's or publisher's websites. It was definitely not written for me and thus I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have when I was young. The characters are good. Journey is the most well-rounded and does grow a bit. She faces some challenges that many young girls face, like parents splitting up, first boyfriends, and family who doesn't always listen to you.The worldbuilding was, for me, oddly divided. Parts were truly alien, complex and interesting, and other parts were totally unbelievable. Jeeps, jeans and helicopters in another galaxy? Modern-day English being the "ancient" language of the aliens and aliens using modern slang? Um. No, that didn't work for me at all though I understand how using these could make it easier to picture the story.By the end, the 'larger universe' and the political plotlines were much more interesting than the instant true love story. But the ending left me a bit disappointed because it was so abrupt. I wanted the next page. And there wasn't one.Do I recommend this story? For teens or preteens, yes. For adults, no.

Chronic inflammation means bad health

Your body is equipped with a powerful defense mechanism known as the inflammatory process. The inflammatory process appears whenever you have an injury or a disease, and it helps take care of the problem. However, the inflammatory process can go astray and operate even when it shouldn't. This is known as chronic inflammation, and it can cause or contribute to many serious and chronic diseases, including diabetes, alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, and asthma. The scary thing is that you can have chronic inflammation for years but not realize it until you get a serious disease. Because of this, chronic inflammation has even been called "the silent killer."

Herbs and spices to reduce chronic inflammation

The good news is that with diet and lifestyle changes, chronic inflammation can be brought under control, and you can avoid serious diseases. One surprisingly easy and effective method of reducing chronic inflammation is cooking with more herbs and spices. Many herbs and spices have been studied scientifically, and have been shown to have an effect on reducing inflammation, even in cooking quantities. Sometimes, the effect of herbs and spices can be greater than that of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs that doctors prescribe to deal with illnesses such as arthritis.

Recipes to get you started

Not all herbs and spices are equally beneficial for inflammation, and a few might actually promote inflammation rather than reduce it. In Anti-Inflammatory Herbs and Spices, author Kathy Aquino walks you through a list of the most effective herbs and spices, and explains everything you need to know about them. But more importantly, this book also collects 30 delicious and easy recipes from the Internet's top food bloggers. These recipes prominently feature an anti-inflammatory herb or spice, and they will get you started with cooking ideas to reduce inflammation and improve your health, starting with your next meal.If you are looking for an easy and effective way to tame chronic inflammation, then download your copy of Anti-Inflammatory Herbs And Spices now.

Zirkle I have been suffering from inflammation for awhile and have been looking for simple ways to correct this...eating better and exercising were two ways I knew would help. I found this book and was a letter to get it for free, here on Amazon.com...and am I glad I did. It had some great information about the spices and I even liked most of the recipes...which, for me, is rare with these kinds of books. It's an easy book to follow along with, no big long words that mean nothing...just straight to the point information, using common spices and herbs. Can't wait for my next check up and blood work...I think my doctor will be pleasantly surprised at the new results.
