By Christian Messerschmidt The “Sage Running Secret” is a very unique book as it caters to a very specific audience: the new group of runners that flock into trail and mountain ultra races with relatively little road running or collegiate/high school track and cross-country experience. I meet these runners at all races and they are characterized by passion for adventure, a desire to test their limits and the camaraderie of a sport that has recently gained huge popularity. What these people often lack is a solid foundational knowledge of training principles and physiology, a cookie-cutter training plan (which their road-marathon peers often use) or even a personal coach.This is where the book of Sandy and Sage comes in:As experienced running coaches and professional athletes they have developed a sound brand and following in recent years. Their e-book covers the essential elements of ultra-marathon training sans any jargon in clear and easily understandable terms. Their minimalistic approach focuses on the most important aspects of running from form to training paces and offers essential and almost universally accepted training wisdom in a very condensed format. While the authors base their advice on that of the great running coaches like Lydiard and Daniels they also differ from Jack Daniels when it comes to the importance of VO2Max in distance running.It is important to understand the above as the intention of the book and not expect a comprehensive and highly scientific book on running and training such as “The Science of Running” by Steve Magness (which ironically ranks right next to it at the time of writing this review) or Jack “Daniels’ Running Formula”.As an avid ultra runner and reader of any training book I can get my hands on I have enjoyed this publication for its brevity and focus on the vital elements of training- as in every book, you always discover something new!I also highly recommend their affordable generic ultra plans for 50K/50mile races that provide a solid guideline for the midpack to even frontpack runners in regional ultra events.

Easy to read, easy to understand and put into action. If this is your primary source for running information, it will be very helpful. I did not get the version with training plans. This is a little picky, but the authors could stand to have a decent proofreader before publishing. Misspellings and grammatical errors throughout. Not everyone is a writer, but if you're publishing a book, you should have someone look it over who has a keen eye for these types of details. It helps consumers feel more confident in their purchase, if nothing else.
