The poems in Alluvial Cities are drawn from this layered landscape's geology and history, its people and language, and the kindred ties between earth and water, flesh and blood. DEUCALIONIDS The waters broke from the void before first light, a divinity ripping through the trembling flesh of marshes and the levees’ old clay thighs, covering every mile of St. Bernard Parish.   Houses with their cement slabs have floated light as the rinds of watermelons you ate as a boy and chucked into Lake Catherine, swelled to overflowing by the god that surged into the Rigolets estuary   and left an afterbirth of sweet crude leaked from foundered tanks.  Cars hang like carrion birds on the highest branches and torn roofs.  Leached of mud and flood waters, the houses we pass cry out   broken window panes, duct-taped fridges, and a stillness that leaves us on the dead grass of this woman’s home, like so many thrown bones.

Alluvial Cities is on the short list for two reasons. First, I am certain that I did not pick up everything the author was trying to put down during the first reading. Hannan's poetry is full of symbolism and clever references to ancient mythology that, frankly, went over my head during round one. But in a good way. The poem "Diagenesis" describes finding Mardi Gras doubloons, his grandmother's jewelry and other relics of the past while digging through "mud and river silt." During my first reading of this book, I was consumed with the feeling that there were similar hidden treasures to be discovered that I was just missing while glancing at the surface. The second reason I will read this again is because of the sheer power of the language. There are vivid descriptions of the landscape and geology of south Louisiana, beautiful even in its decay. The themes of family, music and food - staples of Louisiana living - appear throughout. If there is a more unique portrayal of one person's deep love for his home, I have not found it. If you love south Louisiana and ancient mythology, this is required reading. Even if you have no interest in either, read it anyway. It will nourish your soul.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. For the Wetland Classicist By Christian The author is quite talented; there is much evocative language in his poetry. He draws in references to classical Greek, Italian, French, Latin, and Hebrew through settings and themes in southeast Louisiana, mingled like the selfsame earth and waters of the eponymous Alluvial City. The book is easy to pick up the first time, but improves with repeated readings. The series of stories of his grandfather watching the wetlands recede over the years is heartbreaking in that way that only people of that region can wholly understand, yet can reach the hearts of anyone who's had a home or a family. I'll keep this one on my shelf and peruse it over and over.
