About the Author Efrat Ginot, PhD, a graduate of the NYU Postdoctoral Program for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, is a psychologist-psychoanalyst in private practice in NYC. Her published papers have integrated neuropsychology and psychoanalytic processes, and she received the 2002 Gradiva Award for best article. Ginot is an instructor at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and a supervisor at the Fifth Avenue Center for Counseling and Psychotherapy. She is also an artist.Allan N. Schore, PhD, is on the clinical faculty of the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, and at the UCLA Center for Culture, Brain, and Development. He is the recipient of the American Psychological Association Division 56: Trauma Psychology "Award for Outstanding Contributions to Practice in Trauma Psychology" and APA's Division 39: Psychoanalysis "Scientific Award in Recognition of Outstanding Contributions to Research, Theory and Practice of Neuroscience and Psychoanalysis."He is also an honorary member of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Dr. Ginot opens with: My Unconscious Made Me Do It: an Excuse or an Accurate State of Affairs, a chapter regarding age-old questions of free will. She then deftly maps out a way of thinking about the conscious-unconscious continuum based on recent advances in neuroscience. Subsequent chapters engage the neuroscientific understanding of: the building blocks of self systems, nervous system dysregulation, enactments, repetition and resistance, the intergenerational transmission of trauma, narcissism, and more.Dr. Ginot has done her homework. She has read widely and makes the neuroscientific and developmental research accessible as she weaves it into psychoanalytic understanding. Most impressive is her commitment to being both scientist and caring therapist. She shines a light on what “works” in psychoanalysis to move the patient and reduce suffering and repetition. She opens the door for psychoanalysts to be curious about the so-called alphabet therapies (AEDP, EMDR, SE, IFS, CBT, DBT) and how they can maximize flexibility in unconscious maps through mindful reflection.This book is a joy to read. Dr. Ginot’s clinical examples from her practice highlight her findings, and her summation and integration of the current neuroscientific research is a gift to the reader.

The best book I've ever read on the subject By Nicholas Andrew The best book I've ever read on the subject.As someone who works with hypnosis in a clinical setting I find myself constantly inundated with theories of 'the unconscious mind' many of which are subpar at best. This book combines neuroscience with a relational psychoanalytic perspective to present a fresh view of the unconscious. Grounded in solid theory and practise this book is a must read for anyone with even a passing interest in the subject. I will be re-reading it multiple times.
