Two leaders in the field of genetics—a bioethicist-health lawyer and an obstetrician-gynecologist geneticist—answer the most pressing questions about the application of new genetics to our universal medicine and what personalized medicine means for individual healthcare.
Breakthroughs in genetic research are changing modern medicine and pharmaceuticals. But what are these changes and how do they affect our individual care? Genomic Messages examines these groundbreaking changes and the questions they raise: What kind of specific medical innovation do we have to look forward to now and tomorrow? How will this “flood” of genetic messages change our lives, our interaction with our physicians and our healthcare system?
Groundbreaking and provocative, Genomic Messages fuses the often conflicting worlds of medicine and law to provide information and insight that will impact the health choices of every one of us, from how medicine is practiced to concepts of privacy, confidentiality, and informed consent. Ultimately, it reveals how genetic information is changing how we think about ourselves, our health, and our future.

Review “Beginning tomorrow, your health, privacy, and peace of mind could be imperiled if you fail to heed the compelling content and insightful advice of George Annas and Sherman Elias in Genomic Messages.” (Jerome P. Kassirer, , M.D.Distinguished Professor, Tufts University School of MedicineEditor-in-Chief Emeritus, The New England Journal of Medicine)“It is often said that the field of genetics is moving so fast that ethics and the law cannot keep up. This is not the case if you read this comprehensive, accessible, and engaging book …” (Arthur L. Caplan, Ph.D Head Division of Medical Ethics, New York University Langone Medical Center)“ As all of us face decisions as patients about whether to undergo genetic tests and as citizens about whether to ban genetic tampering, Genomic Messages provides direction as we unfold our genetic maps (Lori Andrews, Professor of Law, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law)“ Annas and Elias propose ways we can control the use of genomics on ourselves and our families to gain its benefits, without falling prey to this unregulated technology, eroding our privacy, and becoming needlessly alarmed by unwanted genomic messages.” (Sidney M. Wolfe, MD, Founder, Senior AdvisorPublic Citizen's Health Research Group and www.WorstPills.org)“Through telling the stories of actual patients, Annas and Elias identify the key issues that need addressing as we advance toward a future where genomics will be commonplace in clinical care and precision medicine will be known as just medicine.” (The Scientist)
From the Back Cover
Ready or not, medical practice is changing. Advances in the field of genomics—the study of how our DNA is constructed and functions—have made it easier for physicians to diagnose, treat, and even predict today's many pressing health concerns. With the emergence of genomic sequencing and DNA analysis, this is an exciting moment in science, medicine, and personal health.
But it's also an uncertain time, one fraught with understandable and uncomfortable questions:
- Can we take advantage of genomic progress and avoid genomic discrimination?
- Can medicine be tailored to a patient's unique DNA profile?
- How will DNA banks and electronic medical records affect our privacy and welfare?
- Should we screen our healthy child's DNA?
- When is information too much information?
In Genomic Messages, George Annas, j.d., m.p.h., and Sherman Elias, M.D., a health lawyer/bioethicist and an obstetrician-gynecologist/geneticist, respectively, answer these and other pressing questions about genomics. Together, they detail the field’s past, present, and future, while laying out its myriad legal, medical, and ethical ramifications. They empower individuals and families with the knowledge to make better decisions about their short-term and long-term health.
Comprehensive, accessible, and revolutionary, Genomic Messages is the definitive guide to genomics, personalized medicine, and the future of healthcare.

In the movie GATTACA humanity alters into enhanced genetically modified humans. This movie brought me into this science world in 1997 and by 2007 with nextgen sequencing I witnessed companies like 23andme offering genetics direct to the consumers. Then in 2012 with the discovery of CRISPR/Cas9 and Targeted Genome Editing I was really interested and ultimately now in the present we can modify any living organism including humans. Science Fiction is reality! The points made in this book seem obviously simple compared to science fiction yet is unheard of by the average person. This book fills this gap by offering a smooth read to the average reader. This work also provides a glimpse of the present, the potential for the future, and most importantly demonstrates the fine line between detecting/curing diseases and abuse of reading too much into the data of genomic sequencing. Are we ready for the social implications of doctor's interactions with electronic medical records with a bigdata driven genomic module?

By Alicia As the field of genomics grows and gains an increased understanding of and integration into medical care, it continues to be defined. George Annas and Sherman Elias make a prudent contribution to this discussion in their book, Genomic Messages. The authors address the present state of genomics in healthcare, with particular focus on informed patient (consumer) choice, as well as where the research (and conversation) is taking us. This book will prove a useful resource that will help individuals and their families better understand the multitude of ways genomics is impacting their life (and they may not even realize it) and the strengths and limitations of undergoing genetic testing. This book also contains passages from and references to numerous relevant texts and references, all great resources for those involved in patient care (especially Geneticists and Genetic Counselors).
