When you walk out of a counseling session do you have a clear idea of what you need to do and how to go about doing it? Most models of Western Psychotherapy work toward insight as a primary objective, or try to help you change your thinking. In A Natural Approach to Mental Wellness, Gregg Krech asserts that psychological and emotional health have more to do with skillful means. Drawing on the principles of Japanese Psychology and Eastern Wisdom, Krech identifies four key skills that can be learned – Acceptance, Attention, Co-existing with Unpleasant Feelings, and Self-reflection. These skills are developed through practice – like playing the piano – not by talking (which helps us become better talkers). Becoming “skillful” is how we cope effectively with anxiety, depression, anger, shyness and just about any real-life problem we encounter as our life unfolds. Mastering these four skills can help us live a more purposeful and meaningful life, while being a bridge to spiritual life as well. This small book is both practical and empowering -- a radical departure from traditional models of mental health which offers us hope that our lives are not determined by a diagnosis.

I especially liked how practical it was and how it gave so many ideas about how to be mentally well. I especially liked how, in many ways, it went against traditional psychotherapy. At the end of the book it listed ten myths about mental health, which many professionals and lay people alike have come to believe as FACT. Here are the ideas in the book that really resonated with me: 1) Accept your thoughts and feelings as they are; you don't need to get rid of them 2) It's ok to have negative or unpleasant feelings; we don't have to feel good or positive all the time, but those feelings don't have to stop us from doing what we want to do and need to do in life- take them along for the ride (love that) 3) So much of life is where we put our awareness- if we put it on everything that is wrong, missing, or not working, then that's what we'll experience. If, on the other hand, we put our awareness on all that we have been given, our perspective and our life will seem altogether different, 4) Eat healthy and GET MOVING. Both can make such an impact on how you feel, and it's so true. 5) Reflecting on what you do positively for others, what they do postively for you, and how you impact others in a negative way is very meaningful and definitely helps with relationships, 6) Finding purpose in life and not just SURVIVING- finding your reason to get up in the morning, and 7) Not focusing so much on ourselves- our thoughts, our feelings, our pains, our problems- focusing more on the external world and all that is has to offer. Sometimes I think of this when I'm out walking my dog on a beautiful day, and my mind is STUCK in my own thoughts about myself. After reading this book, now when I catch myself totally absorbed in myself, I switch gears, bring myself back into the moment, and start to notice all the beauty in nature: the gorgeous blue sky and white puffy clouds, the sound of the birds, the fragrance of the flowers and the beauty of the trees. I instantly feel better! Also, the exercise component is very important. It's so easy to get in bed or on the couch when feeling blue, but this only makes you feel worse. After a nice walk, it's amazing how much better everything looks. This book is definitely a life-changer. It's totally engaging, enjoyable to read, and will definitely improve our mental health. Thank you Gregg for writing another awesome book! By the way, I also loved Naikan!

A great source for information about Japanese mental health strategies By Grateful Heart I've been teaching the Japanese therapies, Morita and Naikan, to my counseling students in private and classroom settings for the past 22 years. My favorite text has been A Natural Approach to Mental Wellness by Gregg Krech, now in a new, expanded edition. It is a gem of a book that concisely yet comprehensively presents the principles of these Eastern strategies, enhanced with meaningful stories and useful exercises. This special book has enabled many of my clients to use this material and to live a meaningful life. -- Barbara Sarah, LCSW, Founder, Oncology Support Program, Benedictine Hospital, Kingston, NY

Simple and Fuctnional Wisdom By obakeinu "A Natural Approach to Mental Wellness" is another example of the fine work being accomplished at the ToDo Institute. This seemingly small book is full of words of ancient wisdom that have been masterfully communicated to the modern world. This book is timely in that our health system is within the context of a paradigm shift. The astute health care provider will recognize that prevention and wellness are the preferred approachs to healthcare. And the lay reader is given solid examples of how to take responsibility for their own wellbeing. If people can follow these simple, yet powerful recommendations, then the cost of medical care may be lowered and that care might be accomplished in a more person centered manner.I would recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone interested in wellness of the mind, body and spirit.Robert C.Strayhan,MD
