From fierce to funny, from brazen to vulnerable By MissCoco From fierce to funny, from brazen to vulnerable, Vakilian’s poetry boldly analyzes and confesses the many lives within a Woman.The first thing I noticed about Vakilian’s work is her confident and refreshingly down to earth and honest voice. Her tone is direct, empowered and bright. I especially appreciate how embodied her writing is, and the attention she gives to the sensuality and realness of a woman’s body without exploiting it, or reducing it to a disassembled object. Here are some of my favorite examples:From “My Violin of an Armpit”:My violin of an armpitI play across it sometimesWith the bow of a razor bladeOr sometimesPizzicato tickles from the fingertips of my loveFrom: “A Letter”:I missed you hamstringInner thigh tried to come between us.We used to hang out with knees and calves at the beach, andIn our dresses.I also enjoy how she uses major variances in diction throughout her pieces which gives the collection, as a whole, transformative quality. For instance, she writes a series of poems inspired by phrases, one taken from Will Smith’s character in After Earth, another from Diana Ross in The Wiz, then finally to William Shakespeare himself in a poetic response to the climatic death scene of Romeo & Juliet! It’s a unique and evocative set that prove meaning can be found anywhere when you use a wide enough lens to broaden your scope.What I admire about this woman, this poet, is her unapologetic voice and her uncompromising nature. She demonstrates a powerful sense of self understanding and buoyant curiosity for all things both spiritual and sensual. Reading her collection has been a delight.
