Discussion of Cold Damage (Shang Han Lun) and contemporary texts of ancient China form the bedrock of modern Chinese medicine practice, yet these classic texts contain many concepts that are either hard to understand or confusing. Based on over thirty years' medical practice, and study of the texts, this book explains the concepts involved so that the clinical applications of the ancient texts can be better understood and put into practice. The author looks at the larger context of ancient Chinese culture and philosophy in terms of theoretical knowledge, scholarly approach, and mindset in order to explain the basis for the medical texts. He also discusses the work of later Chinese medical scholars in elucidating the texts. He then goes on to look at more specific issues, such as the six conformations, zang-fu organ theory, the theory of qi and blood, the theory of qi transformation, and how these are understood in the ancient texts. He also discusses shao yang and tai yang theory; the element of time, and its place in understanding six conformations diseases.

This remarkable work of scholarship will clarify many questions about the interpretation of the ancient texts for modern use, and will find a place on the bookshelf of every practitioner of Chinese medicine, as well as on those of scholars of Chinese medicine.

Wonderful contribution to Classical Chinese Medicine studies By Philip Settels This is a wonderful contribution to the study of Classical Chinese Medicine, and it is the first book that I know of of this kind in English.Liu Guohui has done a beautiful job compiling information about the historical and cultural context in which Zhang Zhongjing wrote what we now call the Shanghan Lun and Jingui Yaolue. Liu talks about Shanghan Lun scholarship throughout the ages, introducing important figures, their ideas and contributions, and how they influenced later thought and understanding of the text. He introduces theoretical concepts, and includes commentaries from these important figures, before offering his own take on the subject. This is an amazing primer to the Shanghan Lun, essentially teaching "how to read it", and now I am anticipating his translation of the Shanghan Lun itself, due to come out in October.

A very approachable introduction By Katherine Trudeau This is a really concise introduction to the theories behind Ancient Chinese Medicine and made some less commonly known information comprehensible to the Western mind. It does get a little wound up in the history and intellectual theory, but that is what the Chinese Tradition has focused on for centuries, so there would be no getting around it.This is NOT a book for just everyone. You have to want the information to wade through it, but I have tried to read the complete texts with no success, so this higher level introduction is a grand achievement for someone like me, who is genuinely curious, but simply unable to divine truths within the normal torrent of detail from traditional Chinese texts.
