Pressure Cooker Cookbook helps busy people like me to maximize time especially in preparing healthy and delicious meal. It’s amazing to know that pressure cooker can cook almost any food and that includes desserts! I used to think pressure cooker is only used in tenderizing meat. I really don’t have any idea that fruits and other dessert ingredients can also be processed in a pressure cooker. I am now determined and encouraged to buy a good pressure cooker. Thanks to the tips given in choosing the right one as well as on how to handle it with care. And with the easy-to-follow recipes, I know I could never go wrong in preparing desserts for my family!

But I’m thoroughly enjoying this one and most probably will buy another one with Christmas recipes. Its fun for me to read this book because, I never thought that there is these many recipes that you can prepare with the help of a good pressure cooker. I always believe that you need to have an oven to bake lemon cheesecake, pudding, and so many more. Yet this book proves otherwise. With just a reliable pressure cooker you can do a lot of cooking, without panicking if you’re baking in the right temperature like what you do when you bake or cook something in the oven.

"A law professor sounds an explosive alarm on the hidden unfairness of our legal system." —Kirkus Reviews, starred  A child is gunned down by a police officer; an investigator ignores critical clues in a case; an innocent man confesses to a crime he did not commit; a jury acquits a killer. The evidence is all around us: Our system of justice is fundamentally broken.   But it’s not for the reasons we tend to think, as law professor Adam Benforado argues in this eye-opening, galvanizing book. Even if the system operated exactly as it was designed to, we would still end up with wrongful convictions, trampled rights, and unequal treatment. This is because the roots of injustice lie not inside the dark hearts of racist police officers or dishonest prosecutors, but within the minds of each and every one of us.   This is difficult to accept. Our nation is founded on the idea that the law is impartial, that legal cases are won or lost on the basis of evidence, careful reasoning and nuanced argument. But they may, in fact, turn on the camera angle of a defendant’s taped confession, the number of photos in a mug shot book, or a simple word choice during a cross-examination. In Unfair, Benforado shines a light on this troubling new field of research, showing, for example, that people with certain facial features receive longer sentences and that judges are far more likely to grant parole first thing in the morning.   Over the last two decades, psychologists and neuroscientists have uncovered many cognitive forces that operate beyond our conscious awareness. Until we address these hidden biases head-on, Benforado argues, the social inequality we see now will only widen, as powerful players and institutions find ways to exploit the weaknesses of our legal system.    Weaving together historical examples, scientific studies, and compelling court cases—from the border collie put on trial in Kentucky to the five teenagers who falsely confessed in the Central Park Jogger case—Benforado shows how our judicial processes fail to uphold our values and protect society’s weakest members. With clarity and passion, he lays out the scope of the legal system’s dysfunction and proposes a wealth of practical reforms that could prevent injustice and help us achieve true fairness and equality before the law.

Benforado deftly analyzes actual cases and recent studies in psychology and neuroscience to argue for broad-based reforms...A stimulating critique of today's criminal justice system with applications to recent cases in Ferguson, MO, and elsewhere...Authoritative and accessible."—Library Journal, starred"...a well-documented eye-opener."—San Francisco Book Review "Unfair succinctly and persuasively recounts cutting-edge research testifying to the faulty and inaccurate procedures that underpin virtually all aspects of our criminal justice system, illustrating many with case studies."—The Boston Globe"In Unfair, [Benforado] argues that most errors in criminal justice stem from the failure to take into account the frailties of human cognition, memory and decision-making…this is a book everyone in the legal profession should read, and the rest of us too, for it is as much about the confounding idiosyncrasies of everyday behaviour as inequity in law." —New Scientist“Benforado makes a compelling case, backed with reference to extensive scientific research, for [his] point of view in Unfair… Over and over again, Benforado demonstrates that basic assumptions underlying the criminal justice system are not supported by scientific evidence… [He] also reminds us of how far the practice of criminal justice has drifted from its ostensible goals… He is hopeful, however, that the system can be reformed, and the information in this book is offered in part toward that end. Unfair offers an excellent overview of an important body of information.”—PopMatters“Benforado is part of a rising chorus of academics, politicians, and those of us who work in the criminal justice system who are appalled by the fact that this country spends $60 billion a year on prisons and boasts the dubious honor of incarcerating more persons per capita than any other nation. In Unfair, Benforado does a wonderful job of describing the scope of the problem and of thinking creatively about how we can improve our criminal justice system.”—The Federal Lawyer“Insightful… one of the most important books written in a very long time.”—Douglas Blackmon, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Slavery by Another Name; American Forum "Benforado's book is simply chock-full of eye-opening research and practical suggestions for improvement... Hopefully, [Unfair] will push us to take a step in [the right] direction."—Greater Good"As gripping as a Grisham novel, only it isn't fiction. With captivating cases and razor-sharp science, Adam Benforado puts the justice system on trial and makes a bulletproof argument that it's fundamentally broken. This extraordinary book is a must-read for every judge, lawyer, detective, and concerned citizen in America."—Adam Grant, Wharton School of Business, and author of Give and Take "In Unfair, Adam Benforado makes us aware of all our many imperfections when it comes to the judgment of others in our midst. He does so gently and with astonishing knowledge. Learning so much about our subconscious biases and the judicial system that exploits them is fascinating--and deeply troubling. But he goes further: he offers obtainable solutions, ones that we should race to effect, both within our own minds and in the human fates on which we bring our minds to bear."—Jeff Hobbs, author of The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace"Adam Benforado has written a book that will make you rethink everything you believe about crime and punishment. He gracefully blends science and storytelling to make a powerful case that our failure to bring the realities of human psychology into the courtroom has led to profound injustice. Enthralling and unsettling in equal measure, Unfair might be the most important book you read this year."—Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive"This thoughtful and penetrating study raises many deeply troubling questions, and even more important, offers humane and very reasonable approaches to cure some of the ills of a system of 'criminal injustice' that should not be tolerated."—Noam Chomsky, Professor Emeritus, MIT"Systems of justice are built by human brains. As such, they're subject to all the foibles of human psychology, from biased decision-making to xenophobia to false memories. With the eye of a scholar and the ear of a storyteller, Benforado marshals the burgeoning research to illuminate the nexus between law and the mind sciences."—David Eagleman, Director of the Initiative on Neuroscience and Law, and author of Incognito"Unfair is beautifully written, painstakingly researched, profoundly illuminating, and deeply disturbing. As evidence mounts that our criminal 'justice' system abounds with injustices, Benforado lays bare the systemic and psychological sources of its failures, weaving together compelling narrative and recent insights from the mind sciences. Unfair is must reading for anyone who cares about justice and, more important, for anyone who does not."—Jon Hanson, Alfred Smart Professor of Law, Harvard Law School, and Faculty Director of the Project on Law and Mind Sciences and the Systemic Justice Project"Unfair is a beautifully written book that manages to be both engrossing and important--a fascinating blend of psychological insight, legal know-how, and compelling storytelling. If you've ever wondered why the legal system doesn't work as well as it should, Benforado's intelligent take on the relationship between human psychology and the law will enlighten you--and leave you hopeful that we're capable of doing better."—Adam Alter, NYU Stern School of Business, and author of Drunk Tank Pink "Unfair is an engaging, eye-opening read. By weaving together the latest findings in psychology and neuroscience with real-world stories of justice gone wrong, Unfair sheds new light on how easy it is for unconscious biases to wreak havoc on the criminal justice system and the steps that can be taken to make the system fairer."—Sian Beilock, University of Chicago Professor of Psychology, and author of Choke and How the Body Knows Its Mind"Unfair is an incisive look at the problems that arise in the legal system because of the way people think as well as the prospects for meaningful reform. Adam Benforado has written an engaging and masterful book on one of the most important issues society has to face."—Art Markman, Professor of Psychology, University of Texas, author of Smart Thinking and Smart Change"In this provocative critique of the American criminal justice system, Adam Benforado demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt that unfair outcomes aren't tragic exceptions--they're the rule, and human psychology is to blame. Bringing together cutting-edge research with insights from real life cases, Benforado shows us how our hidden biases undermine our guarantee of fairness and equality under the law, and offers much-needed solutions."—Philip Zimbardo, author of The Lucifer Effect "It's surprisingly easy to look back at high-profile criminal proceedings and see the flaws, while taking the overall system for granted. Adam Benforado looks across the whole canvas, elucidating through empirical data and scientific research how our own legal structures measure up--or, more accurately, don't--to our values of justice and fairness. Criminal law in the United States is far from perfect, and Benforado's thorough, thought-provoking examination is a welcome step in identifying and preventing institutionalized injustice."—Jonathan Zittrain, George Bemis Professor in Law, Harvard Law School"In this fascinating book, Adam Benforado sheds new light from just about every angle on our criminal justice system. Practitioners, policy makers and everyday citizens will learn much about a subject that demands greater public debate."—Tom Perriello, former Representative, United States Congress"Unlike fields such as economics or philosophy, judicial theory and practice has largely ignored relevant findings about the human mind coming out of behavioral neuroscience and social psychology. This timely and important book can help us bring our criminal justice system into the 21st Century."—Edward Slingerland, Co-director of the Centre for the Study of Human Evolution, Cognition and Culture and author of Trying Not to Try "An admirable collection of compelling stories about what is wrong with the criminal justice system.”—Christian Century

Interesting and depressing examples of a problem I already accepted as true By Nathan Webster This is an interesting book, and if I had a problem with it it was mainly because I came to it already agreeing with most of its conclusions - so it didn't change my mind or really make me think of anything in a new way. I pretty much already knew that we, as people, make inaccurate snap judgments and don't look at the whole situation.Even the prosecutors who withheld evidence aren't even 'evil' people exactly - it's not like they wake up deciding to frame an innocent person, but they're so convinced they're doing the right thing that they can't let go of their certainty and look at a case objectively. I get it - I'm sure it's difficult to be 99.9 percent convinced of someone's guilt, and not allowing yourself to trust a piece of exculpatory evidence.Or - if a medical professional sees a guy who appears drunk, and letting that first impression guide the treatment instead of objectively examining all the potential problems.I agree with other reviewers who note this is a hard book to "like" and is certainly not one I had any interest in reading straight through. I had to put it aside as I was getting overwhelmed with accounts of rank unfairness as the title promised. But it's an important and valuable book to make us think about how "fair" we really are, in how we interact with those around us.One of the book's bad reviews is a screed that, in an amusing way, proves the book's points. It mentions a complaint about "book smart" medics vs. "street start" medics, and applies a broad brush that applies to all of them. The reviewer has already decided to be angry at any medic who don't meet the reviewer's "working man" standards. It's funny - because the book is dealing with exactly that kind of predetermined stereotype that infects our judicial system.Ultimately, my problem with books like this is - "okay, I'm angry, but now what?" And there isn't really much to be done - Benforado offers a few solutions, but the reality is that only people can make themselves step back and ask themselves if they're being truly fair to the situation. If you're not willing to do that - like in the case of the reviewer above - then there's nothing to be done. I sometimes end up more frustrated after reading books like this, and I was pretty frustrated before.

A Science-Based Look at Our Criminal System By Book Shark Unfair: The New Science of Criminal Injustice by Adam Benforado“Unfair" is a fantastic, well-researched look at what is at the heart of our unfair criminal system. Law professor Adam Benforado has provided the public with an eye-opening gem grounded on the best current science, historical court cases and insightful research. He explores the nature of the criminal mind, eyewitness memory, jury deliberations, police procedures, and intuitions about punishment. This enlightening 402-page book includes twelve chapters broken out into the following four parts: I. Investigation, II. Adjudication, III. Punishment, and IV. Reform.Positives:1. A well written, well-researched book that is grounded on sound logic and good science.2. A fascinating topic, the new science of our unfair criminal justice system.3. Mastery of a complex topic and innate ability to educate and enlighten at an accessible level.4. I love the tone and pace of this book. Benforado is very careful not to oversell the benefits of science while at the same time clearly showing what good research has uncovered and the shortcomings of our system. Kudos!5. A clearly defined theme, “Injustice is built into our legal structures and influences outcomes every minute of every day. And its origins lie not inside the dark heart of a bigoted police officer or a scheming D.A. but within the mind of each and every one of us.” Intriguing.6. Provides many interesting cases and immerses sound logic and science into each one. David Rosenbaum’s story illustrates an unacceptable chain of mistakes. “The physical disgust they felt may have generated an explanation for David’s condition that involved lack of discipline and poor character—drunkenness—rather than another potential cause: a stroke, seizure, diabetes, head injury, or drug interaction. And once the ETOH label was attached, David was in trouble.”7. Confirmation bias and its impact to our criminal system. “Once David was labeled a drunk, the responders and medical professionals appeared to focus on finding evidence that supported that description.”8. A fascinating look at false confessions and what leads to them. “False confessions and incriminating statements are the leading contributors to wrongful homicide convictions, present in over 60 percent of the known DNA murder-exoneration cases in the United States. More broadly, they appear to have been a factor in about 25 percent of all post-conviction exonerations.”9. Great use of neuroscience. “Some scientists have claimed that roughly half of the variability in antisocial traits across the population comes down to the genes that people are born with. All things being equal, if you have a Y chromosome, you are several times more likely to engage in violent criminal behavior. And psychopaths and pedophiles are both disproportionately men. But it can be hard to separate out the impact of genes from social factors: after all, men and women are subjected to very different arrays of experiences and expectations.”10. A look at how lawyers break the rules and what can be done about it. “We should worry, then, about the enormous control that prosecutors have over the state’s evidence and witnesses: they are the ones who decide if and when the defendant’s team will receive the ballistics report or the DNA report or a copy of the witness statement or the initial police write-up.” “Research suggests that the more prosecutors are focused on winning, rather than on achieving justice, the more likely they will be to act dishonestly.”11. The role of juries. “Of course, the faith we have in our own perceptions and our cynical discrediting of those with whom we disagree can create trouble even when a jury does get to consider the case. As jurors, we are often oblivious to how our own preexisting commitments, beliefs, and biases shape our impressions, but we quickly and easily spot them influencing others.”12. Surprising findings and tidbits used throughout the book. “Recent research suggests that a person’s weight can influence juror assessments, with male jurors more likely to reach a guilty verdict when the accused is an overweight woman than when she is thin.”13. So how reliable is our memory? “There is, for instance, compelling evidence that eyewitness identifications are frequently inaccurate. When the actual perpetrator appears in a lineup along with several innocent fillers, witnesses fail to pick anyone out about a third of the time.”14. The impact of race. “Research suggests that people are 50 percent more likely to make an error in identifying a person from another race, although individuals who have a lot of contact with the other race tend to be more accurate.”15. Great stuff on separating truth from untruth. “Overall, it turns out that we are quite bad at ferreting out deception. In a recent analysis of more than two hundred studies, participants were able to identify lies and truths correctly just 54 percent of the time, only marginally better than chance.”16. An excellent chapter on judging. “Although she was forced to retreat from her statements about how gender and ethnicity influence judging, Justice Sotomayor was right: identities and personal experiences do “affect the facts that judges choose to see.”17. So what drives us to punish? “Indeed, there is a growing scientific consensus that it is a desire for retribution—not deterrence or incapacitation—that has the strongest influence on why we punish.”18. A look at prison life. Ugly facts. “A country that abolished slavery 150 years ago now has a greater number of black men in the correctional system than there were slaves in 1850 and a greater percentage of its black population in jail than was imprisoned in apartheid South Africa. Black, male, and no high school diploma? It’s more likely than not that you will spend time in prison during your life.”19. Compelling arguments on what we can do to improve our society. “The starting point of any reform comes in understanding and accepting this reality. We all need to look at the criminal justice system through new eyes. So, raising awareness about psychology and neuroscience research is critical.”20. Notes and a formal bibliography included. Negatives:1. I have one main negative, the lack of links to notes. A real shame since I’m one of those readers who loves to dig deeper into the references. That being said, I’ve read and reviewed a number of books that makes references to such research and Benforado is on point.2. Charts and diagrams would have complemented this excellent narrative. In summary, I absolutely loved this book! It has two of my favorite subjects fused into one, where science meets our criminal system and all that it implies. Benforado won me over with his mastery of this fascinating topic, great pacing, and excellent insights and dare I say judicial use of the best of our current science. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book this good, kudos. I can’t recommend this book enough.Further recommendations: “The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander, “Uncertain Justice” by Laurence Tribe, “Thinking Fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman, “The Nine” By Jeffrey Toobin, “The Roberts Court” by Marcia Coyle, “Braintrust” by Patricia Churchland, “The Blank Slate” and “Better Angels of Our Nature” by Steven Pinker, “The Believing Brain” by Michael Shermer, “Subliminal” by Leonard Mlodinow, “We Are Our Brains” by D.F. Broad examination of areas in which our justice system can be improved and what we could learn from Europeans' systems By OnceMore This well written book provides a broad examination of different areas in which our justice system can be improved to make it more "just," including:* Initial assessment of whether a crime has occurred where focusing on the wrong things could lead first responders to jump to erroneous conclusions* the undue weight that could be given to confessions extracted possibly with the use of questionable techniques* the use of eyewitness testimony that psychologists have found to be vulnerable to many kinds of problems* the emphasis on "winning" rather than the "search for truth" in our adversarial legal system that could incentivize the prosecution team to not share information with the defense team that could benefit the latter's client(s)* the focus on "punitiveness" rather than "rehabilitation" in our prison systemUsing different sources of information such as psychological studies of eyewitness testimony reliability, or look-backs into cases where convictions were overturned due to the more recent use of DNA evidence on appeals or reopened trials to learn how the justice system failed the innocent people in question (many of whom tended to have mental disorders or low levels of education), the author helps readers understand where, how, and why miscarriages of justice could occur. Many of the author's proposals on what we can do to make our justice system more "just" sound reasonable. Examples: Why not digitize all case information and documents and store them in a repository that would be accessible to anyone working on a given case, including staff from both the prosecution and defense teams? Why not use video footages instead of relying on eyewitness testimonies whenever possible?Comparing and contrasting how our legal and prison systems work relative to other, mostly European, countries' systems, the author also highlights how those countries' emphasis on prosecution and defense teams partnering together to better understand what really transpired in a given situation lays a better foundation for focusing on how to help with the rehabilitation of non-violent offenders than our adversarial legal and punitive prison systems, and the lower rates of recidivism in those countries seem to provide evidence that their approaches seem to be working better than ours and might be worth adapting or at least studying further.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It is good for a general guide as to how to work ... By Steve Blancher It is good for a general guide as to how to work with these people. They are great amazing people, and this is a good stepping stone to learning and opening the door to self improvement. I think the biggest thing a person can do to be a better friend to INFJ, is to learn to be a better person. Skills like listening and empathy are a great step. This book help makes you aware of the skills that one needs to help support INFJ.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Too anecdotal and too much extrapolation By Marc Pilon In the past, I investigated the Myers Briggs personality categories, but not too deeply. I came to this through Carl Jung, someone in whom I've been interested for a very long time.Recently, my interest in the Myers Briggs system was rekindled, and I found some very interesting information on the Internet. I found this author through her blog, specifically, with respect to the "INJF door-slam," where such a person permanently shuts out someone after being repeatedly hurt by them. This is something I've done regularly throughout my life, and, to see the phenomena described so well led me to want to find out more about the author. However, I found this book to be a major disappointment. Personality categories, such as Myers Briggs, are useful insofar as they remain broad classes or divisions of people regarded as having particular shared characteristics. In my view, the author extrapolates too much from the basic categories and veers into the anecdotal. In fact, I couldn't relate to most of the detailed experiences relayed in the book. Luckily, it wasn't very expensive.I found that perusing the Internet for information on the INFJ personality type to be much more useful.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I think the author is stalking me 0.0 By Amazon Customer Reading this book was like reading my own journal. INFJ was the first type I ever scored and though I've had my doubts, this book clears up any confusion. I am without a doubt an INFJ.Aside from a handful of typos, this book was very well-written and interesting. INFJs should definitely give it a read.

Follow the true story of my struggle with self-injury, bulimia, and my own mind. Constant anxiety and an abusive past brought me to intentionally, and repeatedly cut my leg, burn my wrist, and beat my arm with a wrench. I was admitted to a psychiatric ward. My fear of regaining the weight I lost, and losing my violent means of coping, causes me to fight against the help I so desperately needed. I went where all the rules were made for me and I had to obey. People cried out in fits. I've seen them destroy the things in their path. I've heard the staff call for security and, moments later, I'd see the patient get carried away by a dozen strong men. Soon, that patient was tied to a bed in an isolation room. My heart ached for those that got tied down. I had no idea that I would soon become one of them. Let me tell you about how I dealt with the loss of my secrets, and how my family reacted to my need to bleed. Let me introduce you to the unique men and women admitted to the ward alongside me. Let me tell you what all this was like for me. This story has descriptive detail of acts of self-injury. I warn you of triggering content.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A powerful reading to match an empowering journey By HMD Oh.my.god! When Melissa opened up her books online for free, I just knew I HAD to read this book. I've wanted to for years, and when I heard about her second edition, that passion only increased. I fully intend to purchase this book in its full form one day. I read the ebook version within 15 hours, split up only by sleep, and it was the greatest, most amazing and heart wrenching, beautiful, profound experiences of reading that I've had in a very, very long time. I cheered for her in the passages where she recognized she had a choice, where she chose recovery and made it through to it despite the times she fell down. I cheered when she made it to her Cancun trip, she showed such resiliency and empowerment in that hospital stay. I loved Dr. Stone and Saul and I'm glad she had such encouraging providers with her throughout her time, both in this book and in her complete experience. The people who chided her for her behavior made me as angry as they did her, and I found myself scoffing at times with what they were insinuating.I've followed Melissa for years, not since the beginning, but I think since about the summer of 2011. She was one of a few mental health Youtubers who I learned about self harm from, what I may be able to do to help those I knew suffering with it and was just a genuinely inspiring and amazing person to get to know from her videos. I wrote to her once on Tumblr and am still honored for the response she gave to my words. I've cried when she's cried, and I'm so proud of her for all that she's gone through and has still stuck it out for. From reading this book, I'm so proud and amazed that she was able to once been so private with her struggles to then growing to be able to speak of them publicly online. I cannot thank her enough for sharing her journey and her struggles and also her accomplishments.I'm so grateful to have gotten the chance to finally read this book. I'm honored and glad that I read it at this point in my life, where last year I went through some psychiatric hospitalizations of my own, and struggles with OCD and self harm. I could find myself relating more to her story and was fond of the memories and friends I made within my own journey that her book churned up for me. I also found it hilarious she also had the ping pong table! I had a ping pong table in two of my stays as well =D Ping pong is great.Overall, I really, really loved the book. The edit at the end, her 'After' made me smile and cry a little. Recovery is possible. And I also believe in every other person out there in the world who may be struggling: You will make it through. And, you are not alone. LADY INJURY, by Melissa C. Water

Is Alcohol Destroying Your Life? It Doesn’t Have To.

Discover How This Proven 12-Step Plan Can Give You Your Life Back.

Is your life a wreck? Are you going broke because of your lifestyle? Is your partner or family ready to give up on you? If you’re a problem drinker, it will only get worse. You’re lucky if you haven’t already spent time in jails and hospitals. Keep on drinking, and you’re likely to die of an alcohol-related disease.

Do you think you can stop on your own? Chances are, you’ve already tried. You switched from liquor to beer, you drank only at certain times, or you quit for short periods. You thought you could keep doing the same things but get different outcomes. The result? You always relapsed.

Ready for Something Different?

It’s time to try a new approach. The twelve-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous has cured millions of alcoholics. For the price of a book, you could save your life. The EZ Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous is a modern, reader-friendly version of A.A.’s basic text, published in 1939 and never updated—until now.

If you’re lesbian or gay, you’ll find the language of the EZ Big Book compatible with your lifestyle. The EZ Big Book does not assume that alcoholic readers live in nuclear families consisting of a mom, dad and kids. The chapter “To Wives” has been retitled, “To Partners.”

A Lifeline for Partners and Families of Alcoholics

The EZ Big Book can be a lifesaver for the partners and families of alcoholics, too. Chapters include “To Partners” and “The Family Afterward.” Coping with an alcoholic is tough. Readers can learn how to handle the problem drinker in their life. Tips in the book show the traps to avoid and ways to lower the drinker’s risk of relapse.

The writing style in the EZ Big Book is simple and direct, making the book more accessible to readers who find the original version, Alcoholics Anonymous, hard to understand. Spiritual references are more inclusive than in the 1939 text written by A.A. founder Bill Wilson. Readers of all faiths, including agnostics, will find the message harmonious with their belief system.

This book is for:

  • Women who object to the sexist language in the original Big Book. The EZ Big Book is gender neutral.
  • All partners of alcoholics, including gays and lesbians. The EZ Big Book makes no assumption about the genders or marital status of partners.
  • Alcoholics at all reading levels. The language is reader-friendly and journalistic in tone.
  • Readers of any faith, including agnostics. The spiritual references in the book are all-encompassing.
  • Non-English speakers. Readers for whom English is a second language buy the EZ Big Book because the writing is simple and direct.

About the Author

The author is a retired science writer with many years of sobriety. She spent most of her working years as a functioning alcoholic, working during the day, drinking at night. This led her to drugs—which led her to emergency rooms and eventually to rehab. After her children and grandchildren said they couldn’t deal with her substance abuse anymore, she reluctantly signed in to a treatment center. When she left rehab 30 days later and joined A.A., she began to enjoy a rich and purposeful life she never knew was possible.

The EZ Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous is the book the author wished she had when she first entered A.A.—a book without sexist language and one that didn’t assume that alcoholics were men with stay-at-home wives. Her goal in writing the book—a project that took four years— was to put the Big Book’s life-saving message in the hands of more readers.

About the Author The author is a retired science writer with many years of sobriety. She spent most of her working years as a functioning alcoholic, working during the day, drinking at night. This led her to drugs—which led her to emergency rooms and eventually to rehab. After her children and grandchildren said they couldn’t deal with her substance abuse anymore, she reluctantly decided to retire from her writing career and sign into a treatment center in one stroke. On discharge 30 days later, she joined Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). That was over 15 years ago. Need for a Revised Big Book The author saw that many newcomers found the original A. A. Big Book difficult to read. This guidebook to A.A.’s 12-step program was published by the founders in 1939. Alcoholics attending A.A. meetings in the 2000s are quite different. Some are homeless or come straight from prisons. They have lost their families. Many are marginally literate. Women in the program are usually divorced or single, some struggling to raise children as single parents. At the same time, she heard women complain of how excluded they felt by the gender bias in the Big Book. The author believed that these alcoholics deserved a book they could read with ease—and even enjoy. The Author’s Experience The author has published over one hundred books and articles under her name. She has taught numerous writing seminars to physicians at national meetings. She has also written about health and science for populations with limited reading skills. Her work was funded by medical institutions, government grants, and corporations. This professional experience inspired her to undertake writing the EZ Big Book. During a four-year timeout in the early 1980s, she attended graduate school at the University of Florida and earned an Ed.S. degree in mental health counseling. She offered private counseling as well as group seminars, which focused on the challenges women face in a male-oriented culture. After a year in clinical practice, she decided to return to her first love, writing—where she could reach more people, still serving as a counselor but on the printed page.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Highly Readable, Informative and Insightful By her review This highly readable, informative, and insightful book will give you what you need to begin your recovery. There are many excellent books out there, but this is the one I suggest to clients (I'm a therapist) who are on the fence about going to that first A.A. meeting. It's a valuable book for partners and family members, as well. Written in a personal tone by a member of A.A., the book engages and holds the reader immediately, and its succinct nature allows it to be read in an evening. Highly recommended!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Composition-Understandable! By Mia Johnson The EZ Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: Same Message-Simple Language by Member A.A.is a really valuable book and I find this highly interesting. This book is a great inspiration for everyone going broke because of alcohol. It contains the message even for their partners and every one attached to their lives. We have seen many cases in the society where families have fallen apart, break-ups in relationships and even fall in to many critical condition due to the addiction to alcohol. Many patients have been diagnosed for deceases caused by alcohol addiction. This book provides an open minded discussion on alcoholism and I really like the concept of this book. I have read the copy of this book of its founder by Bill Willson-1939 and I find this print more understandable than the initial one. This book provides the same message in a modern and understandable way and this is much more adoptable for the present world. This book will turn you around and change your attitudes for sure. It will impress alcoholics to give up liquor for good-good for themselves, their partners and others as well. The book addresses not only the addicted, even the partners and others as well. Many examples are added as inspiration and this book discusses spiritual energy as well.Recommended.
