I've completely lost balance in my nutrition/health, and this book says exactly why it's happened to me and so many other modern dieters....Scott Abel also does offer his own diet advice. I will summarize it as1) 6 out of 7 days a week, he eliminates processed snacks, alcohol, sweets/cakes, sugars, and second helpings. He eats a diet consisting of whole foods (as unprocessed as possible), mainly meat, vegetables, fruits, starches, grains (bread), and whole dairy. On the 7th day, usually Sunday, he eats whatever he wants however much he wants. This is his refeed day which helps to keep his metabolism high. His dietary advice seems to revolve around the idea that added sugar is one of the leading causes of obesity and hormone problems in people today, so he tries to cut it out as often as possible. He does not count calories because if you cut out snacks, alcohol, sweets, sugars, and seconds for most of the week, you should be in a small, barely noticeable deficit anyway.2) Eat food, not too much, mostly plants. (your plate should be 1/3 meat, 2/3s plants starchy or non starchy)3) Unless you are in a physique competition, you really shouldn't need to be counting calories or macros or doing anything extreme. You don't even need that much protein, (1g protein per 1 kg bodyweight is enough).4) the only real deliberate exercise you need is strength training. You don't need cardio (cardio happens when you do fun things like hiking, etc)5) sleep a lot, reduce stress, etc.

Totally Disappointed - Better Title: Misunderstanding the Science of Metabolism By Buyer Save your money.When a friend on Facebook posted a link to this book, I scooped it right up at the deeply discounted promo price. I can't say that I've read everything from Abel before, but what I read here seems to contradict anything I remember reading before. The stuff on calories is in pretty much direct opposition to his approach with The Cycle Diet.First opening on Kindle and seeing Chapter 1: A Calorie Is Not A Calorie, I thought "oh no, not another one". For all intents and purposes calories ARE calories. Hormones do not magically create nor destroy them. But metabolic adaptation can be real. This being the body slowing its metabolic rate with prolonged and considerable calorie restriction. So I skipped forward to this section and read Chapter 4 on Metabolic Damage. It sounded a little off so I checked the reference and the study referenced in the chapter bore no resemblence to the one discussed. This was brought to Scott's attention so he may have fixed this referencing. Still, the interpretation of the study he did discuss was misleading. (Dulloo & Girardier. Adaptive changes in energy expenditure during refeeding following low-calorie intake: evidence for a specific metabolic component favoring fat storage. AJCN 1990)Then someone else posted the following quote on a different thread on Facebook:>>>If calorie math was even remotely an accurate predictor of bodyweight and metabolism, then the “average person” who has increased their calorie intake by 577 calories per day between 1977 to 2006 should have also gained a massive amount of weight. 577 extra calories per person per day adds up to 210,605 calories extra per year.   Multiply that number by 8 years for example (say 2006 - 2014) and you end up with 1,684,840 extra calories per person between 2006 - 2014 (this is assuming calorie intake didn’t increase further, which, let’s be honest— it probably has). Since there are 3,500 calories in an extra pound of fat, 1,684,840 calories works out to 481 lbs of fat.   To suggest that we are burning these extra calories off through activity is obviously ludicrous. To avoid the 481 extra pounds of weight through exercise would require the equivalent of jogging for over 90 minutes every single day, 7 days per week, 365 days a year, for each day of those same 8 years.
