It’s a murder mystery on the moon in this humorous and suspenseful space adventure from the author of Belly Up and Spy School that The New York Times Book Review called “a delightful and brilliantly constructed middle grade thriller.”Like his fellow lunarnauts—otherwise known as Moonies—living on Moon Base Alpha, twelve-year-old Dashiell Gibson is famous the world over for being one of the first humans to live on the moon. And he’s bored out of his mind. Kids aren’t allowed on the lunar surface, meaning they’re trapped inside the tiny moon base with next to nothing to occupy their time—and the only other kid Dash’s age spends all his time hooked into virtual reality games. Then Moon Base Alpha’s top scientist turns up dead. Dash senses there’s foul play afoot, but no one believes him. Everyone agrees Dr. Holtz went onto the lunar surface without his helmet properly affixed, simple as that. But Dr. Holtz was on the verge of an important new discovery, Dash finds out, and it’s a secret that could change everything for the Moonies—a secret someone just might kill to keep...

From School Library Journal Gr 3–7—The year is 2040. Dash, his sister, and their scientist parents are inaugural inhabitants of Moon Base Alpha (MBA), Earth's extraterrestrial colony. Housing only a few dozen people and governed by a strict commander, MBA is not exactly a barrel of laughs for a 12-year-old boy. However, when one of MBA's scientists dies suspiciously and a supply ship brings new residents (including a girl his age), life in space becomes much more intriguing. Though the story has many humorous moments—especially involving the insufferable wealthy space tourists—it also has some plausible science. Each chapter is preceded by a reading from "The Official Residents' Guide to Moon Base Alpha," NASA's part propaganda/part instruction manual, containing such riveting topics as "Exercise" and "Food." Narrator Gibson Frazier keeps the story moving at a good pace, conveying suspense without melodrama. Rather than create pitched character voices, he relies on intonation to differentiate among the large cast. His own voice is deep and clear but boyish enough to suit Dash. The narration flows smoothly, broken only by the humorously intended commercial quality of the "Official Resident's Guide." Space Case should appeal to a broad range of listeners but especially space enthusiasts.—Lisa Taylor, Ocean County Library, NJ
Review *STARRED REVIEW* The whodunit is smartly paced and intricately plotted. Best of all, the reveal is actually worth all the buildup. Thrillers too often fly off the rails in their final moments, but the author's steady hand keeps everything here on track. Fully absorbing." (Kirkus Reviews)"Suspenseful." (Booklist)"This zany sci-fi/adventure/murder mystery won't sit around gathering moondust, especially with such an eye-catching cover!; highly recommended for your middle-grade mystery collection." (Jill Barton, MLIS, Collection Development Ingram's Children's Advance)"Recommended as a breezy read, especially for the budding space scientist." (School Library Journal)

By Ctwink Stuart Gibbs' book Space Case (Moon Base Alpha) is about a 12 year old boy named Dash who is lives in the future at the first lunar colony, Moon Base Alpha. He didn't want to go there - he loved living in Hawaii - but his parents (a lunar geologist and a mining engineer) were both needed on-site to start the moon colony. Dash tells us all about life on the moon and most of it is negative - the food is bad, the beds (sleeping pods) are cramped, and the bathrooms are unspeakable. One day, Dr. Holtz, the colony's resident genius, walks out of the air lock without putting on his space suit correctly and is found dead. Everyone thinks its an accident, but Dash had overheard a conversation Dr. Holtz had had the night before his death and thinks its a murder. My 10 year old daughter really loved this book so its clear that the age range that is suggested for this book (8-12 year olds is spot on). She read it in about 4 days and immediately asked me if there was a sequel. As an adult, I thought the book was well written with alot of comedy thrown in as well as alot of the realities that you would see if you were really part of a moon colony (poor food, cramped quarters, sparse accomodations). Stuart Gibbs obviously has a winning formula for this type of story (see his Spy School and FunJungle series of books) and I and my kids look forward to more of his Moon Base Alpha books!

Especially when it comes to middle of the night trips to the communal bathroom. Dashiell Gibson begins his telling of this lunar whodunnit by explaining the ins and outs of lunar living. Though, to be clear, aside from the honor of a place in the history books, Dash mostly covers the remarkably unglamorous downsides of being one of earth’s first “moonies” — bad food, the substitution of recycled urine for water, and the challenges presented by every day tasks like going to the bathroom. And it’s precisely there where the whole mystery unfolds. You see, it’s while Dash is in the bathroom that everything gets crazy. First, he breaks the toilet. Then, he overhears Dr. Holtz’s phone conversation as the scientist is bubbling over with enthusiasm about a discovery that he plans to share with residents of the base in the morning. Only the new day holds a different kind of surprise — Dr. Holtz has died. And Dash is convinced that he’s been murdered! If you’ve read Stuart Gibb’s FunJungle series, Space Case will feel familiar. As FunJungle series opener Belly Up places a young man (Teddy Fitzroy) in an unusual setting (living on the zoo/theme park grounds), so Space Case sees its hero on the moon. In each novel, there is a mysterious death whose investigation serves as our young protagonist’s respite from the usual doldrums of his day-to-day existence. Despite a small cast of characters, the suspect list becomes fairly long and complicated. Dash befriends new moonie, Kira, who becomes his partner-in-crime-solving.Need-to-know facts about life in space, and more specifically, life on Moon Base Alpha are imparted through excerpted portions of The Official Residents’ Guide to Moon Base Alpha rather than related through Dash’s mouth, helping to keep his voice more securely that of a twelve-year-old. That said, there are still times when Dash sounds older than his years — most notably apparent to me when he says, “I managed not to evacuate my bladder” rather than something more typical pre-teen boy like, “It’s a miracle I didn’t pee my pants.” The occasional slippages out of convincing kid-speak are minor quibbles though, when one considers that Space Case is, on the whole, a smart, expertly-plotted, well-paced mystery with just the right amount of facts and humor mixed in to keep things fun and interesting. If that’s not enough, Gibbs throws in a stellar action sequence that takes place on the lunar surface, and an “I totally didn’t see that coming!” reveal when we find the nature of Dr. Holtz’s discovery. Indeed, when it’s time to return to Moon Base Alpha for the next voyage, be sure you don’t miss the shuttle!Verdict: 4 of 5 Hearts. Marvelous Murder Mystery on the Moon. Dashiell “Dash” Gibson cracks his first “space case” when he solves a murder on the moon. Space Case is a strong start to yet another middle grade series for Stuart Gibbs. Among Gibbs’ now three series — FunJungle, Spy School, and Moon Base Alpha — kids who crave mystery and suspense are sure to satisfy their appetites. Very likely, they’ll enjoy the variety afforded by reading all three!*Disclosure of Material Connection: I would like to thank Simon & Schuster and Edelweiss for allowing me access to the title. Murder on the Moon By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers Dashiell Gibson has been living as one of the first humans to colonize the Moon for six months now, and he’s bored. There aren’t that many kids his age, and there is even less to do. In fact, he’s found he actually enjoys school since it gives him something to do.All that changes one night when he overhears Dr. Holtz planning to reveal a big discovery the next morning. Only when morning arrives, Dr. Holtz is found outside the base dead. He’d gone out alone, breaking one of the biggest rules – one he always made sure others followed. Dashiell is certain that foul play was involved, yet no one else believes him, even going so far as to suggest that Dr. Holtz was beginning to go crazy. Is that why Dr. Holtz was outside? Or did someone really kill him?Since I’ve long been a fan of the author’s books, starting this new series was an obvious choice. It’s one I’m glad I made because this is another winner. The characters are fun and the story is good. We really get to know what life on the colony would be like, yet the story is always entertaining with a nice dash of humor. And the ending? I never saw it coming. This book will appeal to those who enjoy mystery of science fiction from the targeted middle grade age range on up. Personally, I’m already booking my rocket trip for the next entry in what promises to be another winning series.
