There is obvious love for what Riley writes that is evident in the strong, but not annoyingly, vulnerable heroine and a single dad hero who is faced with real-world problems.But at the end of the day, a memorable story must have more than lessons to be learned. Unmasked Heart has that certain charm and staying power to be well above just a satisfactory read. Vanessa Riley challenges the usual norms of Regency romance with her latest novel, Unmasked Heart, an inspirational romance with a biracial heroine as its heart and soul. All of her life, young Gaia has felt that she is not as loved or cherished as her siblings. She thinks it's because she resembles her mother, who was rumoured to have Spanish blood. Gaia is gentle, good-natured and patient--exactly the sort of daughter her father should love, but still he is distant with her and treats her like she is a step above the servants. What Gaia wants most in life is to marry the neighbour's son, a botanist with a fickle heart. Enter to the scene the Duke of Cheshire. He is in need of help from someone like Gaia--someone who will be kind and patient with his mute daughter. He's not looking for love. He thinks himself incapable of love. But when he and Gaia meet, and they have two meet-cutes, it's obvious that Fate has already got something planned for them.I really enjoyed reading Unmasked Heart. I am not someone who usually reads inspirational romances as I generally find them too preachy. However, Vanessa Riley does a great job of NOT being preachy and focusing on what is at stake--the relationship, the growing respect Gaia and the duke have for one another and--when Gaia uncovers the secret of her past--the soul-searching necessary for her to come to terms with who she really is. I thought the question of race was handled quite well--it makes sense that there would be gossip, and that her father would assume that his actions could shield Gaia from disappointment without realising that he is doing his daughter a disservice.A positive and interesting take on the Regency tale with a sweet heroine you want to cheer for.

The duke, a rich and powerful widower found himself attracted to Guai who is from a lower social class. To complicate things more, Guai was actually a mulatto and the product of an adulterous affair between her mother and an African man. Guai’s mother died when she was young and she was raised by her mother’s cold calculating husband. Guai did not know she was a mulatto when she met the duke.The setting for Unmasked Heart is 1819 England.The widowed duke has a mute young daughter. He has vowed he will never fall in love or marry again. But something about Guai melts the duke’s stony heart and he realizes he loves and needs her. Guai has a gift for teaching children. The Unmasked Heart is a story about friendships, family secrets, and the effects an unforgiving spirit can have on people. The duke is my favorite character in the book. He can be fierce when he is wronged and is a cynic regarding religious people due to his strict upbringing. But to people he loves, he is wonderful. This is a Christian romance---no erotic scenes here just a lovely love story.

Riley has given life to her characters and the book is well written and interesting, All of her life, young Gaia has felt that she was different from her siblings and that she did not have her father's love. Her skin is of a darker hue and she was told it was from her Spanish ancestor on her mother's side. It was not until she was grown that she was told that her mother had an affair with an African musician. She has taken care of her small brother, who has a learning disability and her father wants her to remain unmarried and care for his heir. She meets the near neighbor, the Duke of Cheshire. He is in need of help from someone like Gaia--someone who will be kind and patient with his mute daughter. He's not looking for love. He was hurt badly from the adulterous affair of his wife who is now deceased. He finds himself being drawn to the shy, nearsighted Gaia. An unlikely love story with many twists and turns for a beautiful ending. I was given this book from the author for an honest review.
