Evil doesn’t always live next door. Sometimes it lives right in your own home.Eve Moran has always wanted things,” her powers of seduction impossible to resist for those who come in contact with her toxic allure. And over the course of her life, she has proven both inventive and tenacious in getting and keeping whatever such things catch her eye, whether they are jewelry, money, or men. Eve lies, steals, cheats, swindles, and is even willing to take a life, paying little heed to the cost of her actions on those who love her and depend on her. Her daughter, Christine, compelled by love, dependency, and circumstance, is caught up in her mother’s deceptions, unwilling to accept the viciousness that runs in her family’s blood. It’s only when Christine’s three-year old brother, Ryan, begins to prove useful to her mother, and Christine sees a horrific pattern repeating itself, that she finds the courage and means to bring an end to Eve’s tyranny. An atmospheric, eagerly awaited debut novel, Concrete Angel centers around a family torn apart by a mother straight out of Mommie Dearest”, and her resilient young daughter who discovers that survival can mean fighting the closest evil imaginable.

Eve is a woman obsessed but how will our narrator, Eve’s only daughter, respond as her childhood innocence is taken away? Abbott exhibits a pitch-perfect precision with both language and setting in capturing the tragic world of a mid-century Pennsylvania family."Edgar Award-winning author Naomi Hirahara"This is a gripping psychological thriller...will draw fans of the late Ruth Rendell as well as Paula Hawkins' The Girl on the Train."Booklist"A fresh, original voice telling a story that's probably, in broad outline if not detail, more common than we know. Patricia Abbott is a very experienced writer of short stories here stretching herself for the first time and she has done a wonderful job. The book takes place in the Philadelphia and Bucks County area between about 1964 and 1982, with flashback scenes to earlier years. The main characters are Eve Moran, a fascinatingly awful woman you would probably describe as a sociopath, and her daughter Christine, at times her confidant and assistant. Eve's use of her daughter to excuse and even cover up her crimes is almost the worst thing she does. When we are introduced to Eve she seems almost a monster, a Mommy Dearest-type. I mean, what kind of mother would kill a man (this happens on page one, so no spoiler here) and have her twelve year old daughter take the blame? Yet in the course of the novel as we see Eve's background and the choices she makes - and the price she pays for them - I was surprised to find myself almost feeling a little sympathy for her at times. (Of course, Eve's later actions negate this, but still....) This is surely a sign of skillful writing.Overall, this is a very well written and fascinating story and I recommend it highly.

After writing short stories for years, she felt it was time to go with the long form, and she’s done a fine job of it. Eve Moran had a happy marriage, a daughter to be proud of, a good life. But she had always wanted things. Like a Magpie, if she sees it, wants it, she takes it. Not that she needs these things, but she likes stealing and having them. She puts them in boxes, puts the boxes in storage units. Often she never looks at them again, but she continues to want, and take. She lies, cheats, steals, swindles with little or no thought to consequences. That’s the crime in the book; Eve’s ongoing criminal activities. But the way she treats and raises her daughter is also the crime in the book. The author labels the book domestic suspense. Character-driven, a bit noirish in it’s foretelling of (possible) doom, full of conflicts, poor choices, realizations, promises and failures, this book will pull the reader along on the fascinating, if uncomfortable journey of Eve, her daughter Christine and the choices they make. Several times while reading this I was reminded of Elizabeth Graver's The Honey Thief, though in that book it’s the daughter who does the stealing. Both books are beautifully written, perceptive and insightful. Both have strong character interactions. Both are literary gems.

It's Eve Moran, whose life has been a series of small scams, thefts, and deceptions. She can't seem to help herself, and now she's in big trouble. Or she would be if someone else doesn't take the blame for her. That's where her daughter comes in.Christine Moran is 12 years old, and she's pretty much been manipulated by her mother for her whole life, and she confesses to the crime, making it seem as if she was saving her mother's life from an attacker. After that, things get complicated. Eve goes on to more and more complicated schemes, and it begins to dawn on Christine that she's become a partner in crime and might even become more like her. Then Eve has another child.Abbott's writing is sharp and clear, and her characters are as real as your neighbors. Abbott has written a lot of fine short stories, and her first novel is a winner. Check it out.
