Burian-Mohr KILL AGAIN is the second of the Dr. Claire Waters books, written by the Neal Baer and Jonathan Greene, former executive producers of NBC’s Law & Order. It suffers from screenplay-itis.Claire has just returned to work after her traumas in the first book (KILL SWITCH). She has a new apartment, is back at work, is helping teach while she pursues her forensic psychiatric fellowship , and seeing patients, who include Rosa Sanchez, a young mother who has had a spectacular string of bad luck which is about to get worse. After their session Claire sees Rosa walking down the street, where she is arrested by a uniformed member of the NYPD. Claire makes frantic calls to all her contacts in the police department and the probation department (all of whom take her call with nary a quibble), but no one knows what happened to Rosa. So she enlists the aid of deskbound homicide detective Nick Lawler, who is suffering from increasing blindness due to retinitis pigmentosa and is no longer allowed to carry a gun or drive or participate in active investigations. The two of them, of course, jump right in, investigating, playing with guns, driving, and doing just about everything they were forbidden to do. And, with zero attention to protocol or safety, they manage to make some grisly discoveries. Meanwhile, the entire police department is falling all over itself with adoration for Clairea. Sound unrealistic?Fasten your seatbelts. Because from there, with every chapter, it grows exponentially unrealistic, complete with faux psychology, bizarre ritualistic killings, car chases, kidnapping, and a spectacularly unrealistic love story. In addition, there are numerous references to all the traumas of the past, over and over and over... as if this were a TV show and the viewers, who had perhaps missed the first 20 episodes, needed to be told again. Unfortunately, a reader is far better tuned in to this and being told the same bits and pieces repeatedly grows old.The only area where the book does not suffer is in terms of pacing, which is clearly a skill the writers learned in their years of television. You won't need to read the first book because most of it is revealed here. And if you're like me, you won't want to read the next book because that will contain numerous explanations of everything that happened in this one.The best parts were little cool nuggets of science. The worst? See above.

Dramatic writing but unrealistic plot By iiiireader While I think that the writing style of this book is very good, I have a hard time accepting much of the action. I am a reader of mysteries who wants them to make sense. I want to feel that the characters could be real and that I can follow their actions. Unfortunately, that wasn't true in this story. It seemed as if no one in the book did anything approaching reality. The police were constantly breaking rules. If someone was told not to do something, on the next page, that is exactly what they did. I can take a little rule breaking but this went beyond that.I also find it inconceivable that a character can know their life and their loved ones life is in danger but instead of acting responsibility, sends the loved one out to buy eggs for breakfast - leaving both of them exposed to the life threat. Seriously, eggs? Unfortunately, this is a representative sample of the implausible actions that occurred throughout the story. There were also inconsistencies in the story that were a little too much to ignore. At one point, Rosa complains to Claire that she can't see her children until she is off probation and then later in the story, it appears that Rosa has been living in the same apartment with her children. Also, there is a discrepancy the time a rape occurred - in one part of the story, it is in 1977 and a few pages later it is 1982. A parole is out after 17 years and a couple of pages later, it is changed to 10 years. I was given an Advance Reader Copy and these, as well as some other problems may have been cleaned up in editing by the final release.Given all of that, the writers have a real flair for dramatic storytelling. That part of the book was enjoyable. It kept me reading a book that I might otherwise have given up on half way through. This isn't a book that I would recommend to anyone who wants reality based mystery or crime stories. If you are looking for real escapist reading and don't mind that it doesn't make sense or is even consistent, you might enjoy this book.

It takes a while to get into the story though. Like all good serial writers, the authors try to fill readers in on the back-story from the previous book, but they are a bit cagey about this. Perhaps they're reluctant to say too much, because they want you to buy the first book. This makes the narrative confusing. As soon as the story got underway, though, I enjoyed it.Nick, The smartest detective on the case, is especially interesting because he's slowly going blind and has been given a desk job, but still want to be an active cop. His wife committed suicide, and now he's alone raising two girls. This adds an element of domestic drama to the plot, as Nick and Claire, the brilliant forensic psychiatrist, deal with their attraction to each other. The cops are likeable. The killer has a quirky worldview and is prone to gory murder techniques. Like the psychopaths in TV and movie thrillers, he keeps popping up and doing more damage even after he's caught and cornered. The plot offers some major surprises. The action is cinematic, easy to visualize on a big screen. The psychological hang-ups of the characters are a bit less convincing. But overall I found Kill Again an entertaining read. People who have read the first book in the series, Kill Switch, will probably enjoy this book even more.
