While meditating one morning at his urban home in California, Jay Dufrechou noticed that if he quieted the chatter in his head, he heard rain falling on the roof in a way that felt intimate and sacred. Quite unexpectedly, this brought weeping, along with grief. After “really hearing the rain,” Dufrechou left his city life and immersed himself in the natural world, moving with his young family to the Rocky Mountains of Montana. Wanting to understand his own experience more fully, the author gathered stories from over forty people who, like him, found themselves feeling profoundly moved in response to nature. Moving through Grief, Reconnecting with Nature shares a mosaic experience of longing for nature that is deeply personal and yet universal, it describes a return to nature that is also a return to our sensations and emotions – an opening of the heart. Joyful and sacred tears are portrayed alongside tears of loss and longing. Stories of the healing power of nature are shared from people who found nature their only solace during periods of bereavement. Indeed many of the experiences described in the book might be considered spiritual or mystical. About the Author
Jay Dufrechou, JD, PhD, worked for many years as an attorney before he followed the call of spiritual awakening into the experiential doctoral program at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP), now Sofia University, where he currently teaches transpersonal research ethics and dissertation research. In transition from the mountains of Montana to New York City, Dufrechou works primarily as a mediator and consultant in conflict resolution. He is active in the international Holotropic Breathwork community emerging from the work of Stanislav and Christina Grof. Dufrechou s law degree comes from the University of California at Berkeley; his undergraduate studies were at Stanford University, where he majored in English with emphasis in creative writing."

By Amazon Customer At once personal and scholarly, this book explores the current relationship between the human psyche/spirit and the natural world. It outlines the original close bond between human beings and nature, and the increasing disconnect between the two, then posits that the disconnect is a cause for psychic/spiritual malaise, particularly grief, found in contemporary culture. The book also looks at how being physically and spiritually reconnected with nature can both bring forth, and ultimately give some relief from, this condition. Carefully researched and well thought out, the author offers balanced arguments for understanding what is happening in our world, and shares first-hand accounts from many people (including himself) who are affected by the disconnect, and who have found relief through restoring physical and spiritual connections to nature.I found this to be a far ranging book that cannot be readily classified. It is not simply a self-help book, as may be suggested by the title, but does offer some guidance and comfort. And it is more than a scholarly study of the relationship between humans and nature, and how recent formulations in the field of psychology offer ways to understand and bridge the divide between the two. The book weaves together a lot of important ideas about both human culture and psychology, and their relationship to the natural world, and does so in a deeply felt, personal way that often makes these ideas more accessible and engaging.I consider this book a must-read for anyone who loves nature and believes it is important to our well-being, and for anyone trying to understand, and find relief from, the generalized malaise that can accompany the modern day disconnect from the natural world. I also highly recommend it for people with a general interest in contemporary culture and the human condition.My only caution to the prospective reader is it helps to be familiar with the field of psychology when reading this book. It introduces transpersonal psychology and related topics, and these are not commonly understood subjects. As I appreciate it, transpersonal psychology adds physical and spiritual dimensions to the tradition of depth psychology (particularly that of Carl Jung), and as a result provides a more holistic lens through which to see the workings of the human mind in relation to nature. It therefore seems particularly relevant to the subject matter, but may require some readers to make use of the end notes and selections from the bibliography to gain more insight into the ideas from this field.
