There are some scenes in here that really make you angry and sad at the same time.SPOILERS AHEADSimone is damaged. That is the best description I could use for her. After years of verbal and physical abuse from her mother, she is violated in the most despicable way by her stepfather and then victimized by her mother again. I really had a hard time with this subject matter, because I know a woman like Simone's mother. She's an evil narcissist and deserve to walk the Earth with the rest of us. That's how evil she is. Back to the story... as a result of this abuse, Simone seeks to take back her power by behaving recklessly. It is dangerous game she's playing and frankly would have killed her eventually.Paul is also damage. He is physically abused by a alcoholic, cop father who takes away he and his sister's innocence. As a result he takes on the mantle of protector. And I think that is what initially attracts him to Simone. He senses that she needs a good person by her side, but she rebuffs him at every turn because she doesn't feel deserving of that kind of positive attention.I won't give away the entire book, you have to read it. There are some twists and some new characters introduced who look promising. This book deals with some tough subject matter, so if you're not willing to go there, you might be caught off guard. However, I advise you to take a chance and go there. It's so worth it.

There were no gaps in the story, so no needless characters or useless fillers. Everyone in the story served a purpose.The story of Simone and Paul doesn't take you on a leisurely walk on a summers day, with the sun shining and you stopping to smell the flowers. No way, Eve Vaughn starts their story at the end of the walk when all the interesting stuff happens!Some of the sex scenes may shock but they are dealt with tastefully. They all set the tone of who Simone and Paul are - wounded people living in the dark but looking for some light. The H/h are not typical they are gritty and real and so is there story.There are some tidy endings here but not everything is neatly wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree. The author has done a great job of grabbing hold of you and not letting go until the last page is turned.I totally recommend this read

These two had to deal with heartbreak and pain from their past from those that should have been their protectors. Unfortunately they chose to spend the time that should have been used for exploring their feelings for each other, in a destructive manner that only added to their turmoil. It took a bad experience with Simone's destructive behavior to put them on the path of talking to each other and starting to heal and getting the help they both needed. Letting go of the past was the only way to start a future together.
