By delicateflower152 “The Lonely Planet Kids Travel Book: Mind-Blowing Stuff on Every Country in the World” is a large – 9 3/8” X 12 ¼” X ¾” – coffee table-style volume of world trivia. Divided into five sections focusing on the major continents and a sixth section focusing on the fifteen countries comprising Oceania, the book contains a wealth of interesting factual tidbits about each of the individual 202 countries discussed. Each country receives one page on which its information is written.The six sections of the book are separated by the color of the “cards” shown at the top of the page. These colors correspond to the index’s colored boxes showing the countries of that continent or area. Countries are arranged within the sections in alphabetical order, the top card shows the country’s name and a depiction of its flag. The center of the card shows a silhouette of the country, the countries bordering it, and the location of its capital city. At the card’s bottom, the population size, landmass, and the life expectancy of its citizens, as well as the ranking of those facts in comparison with the rest of the world, completes the . The bottom card contains some interesting facts or trivia about the highlighted country.In addition to the “fact cards”, each page is richly illustrated using beautiful photographs – a hallmark of Lonely Planet guidebooks - or child-like artwork that shows no depth, detail, or perspective. Print, like that of every Lonely Planet book, is extremely small. Because the information is printed on a colored background and the pages are so busy, reading may be difficult.The most troubling aspects of “The Lonely Planet Kids Travel Book: Mind-Blowing Stuff on Every Country in the World” may be its use of politically correct information, statements that are offensive to specific groups, and the publishers’ disclaimer page 209. For example, when on the page about North Korea, government is contained under the title “The Great Leaders”. Discussing “The First Americans”, the book highlights only the Apache tribe saying they “…still exist today. Apache tribes live on their own reservations … but they must obey American laws …” Finally the disclaimer states “…Although the authors and Lonely Planet have taken all reasonable care in preparing this book, we make no warranty about the accuracy or completeness of its content and, to the maximum extent permitted, disclaim all liability from its use.”Although some will find “The Lonely Planet Kids Travel Book: Mind-Blowing Stuff on Every Country in the World” entertaining and engaging, I believe there are better overviews of the world available for young readers. Although colorful and packed with information that might be useful for trivia buffs, I prefer books that are factual and publishers who stand behind the books they publish.

Better if titled "Kids Trivia Book" By SBCincinnati [[VIDEOID:b7e818cb105773d75947fb49ff6f8795]] I had expected a book that would focus on what a child would experience in each country if they traveled there. I thought things like language, customs, food, lodging, must see places, terrain, dress, ease of travel, human rights, average income, climate and types of accommodations would be included. Instead there a lot of trivia listed on each page that has very little bearing on what you would see or do in that country.The book is laid out by region and then countries ordered from north to south. Each country is given one page. There is a country "card" in the top corner that features a map, capitol, population, land mass and life expectancy. The rest of the page is filled with photos, clipart and little facts. For example Germany's facts include something about Goethe, sausages, Neuschwanstein castle.both world wars, the printing press and Oktoberfest.I guess I was just expecting something a bit different.

Technically, I got it for the resident seven year old, but I kind of stole it from her to read the whole thing.The book visits every country in the world, giving you random facts, gorgeous photos, and weird bits that are simply fascinating. You learn about animals, food, culture, and even language as you journey around the world.While some of these were facts I already knew, just as many were new to me and, after reading this, my daughter and I had a lot of "did you know" conversations with other family members.This is perfect if you have a kid who is interested in travel, or if you just want your child to have a little more of a world view.Note that there are a few pictures of skulls/skeletons and a few gross things for the more squeamish kids, but those pictures are indeed few. The book is appropriate for any age.This is one of those books we'll be keeping and even using to make a few travel plans!
