Fun Voice, Sloppy Story By Readerly 2.5 stars rounded up.If you asked me to write a summary of this book without looking at the back, I'd start with something like, "Audrey narrates a story about her older brother Frank, and his conflict with his mother over how much he plays video games." For the first third to half of the book, Audrey feels like an afterthought.Sophie Kinsella's voice is fun and sharp and funny (I very, very rarely laugh aloud when reading and I did twice in this book), just like her Shopaholic series.Storywise, however, I felt this was really flawed. Audrey is suffering from a severe anxiety disorder and depression, and you can piece together that this condition is a result of some serious bullying at school - severe enough that multiple students were expelled and an administrator fired. However, anything of substance is only alluded to - both the initial incidents and her breakdown. Because those are so vague, her symptoms and recovery are also vague, and what heals her in the end is, basically, getting a boyfriend.It was okay for a while for the core issues to be avoided, because she's not ready to face them yet. But when she does start to recover, it would have been easier to sympathize with and cheer for her if she faced her demons instead of just darting around them.This was just a missed opportunity. Not every book has to be a Lesson, but if you're going to tackle subjects like bullying and depression, tackle them. Don't meander around them for a few hundred pages and call it good.

Kinsella's first YA novel is a winner By audrey frances I've been a big fan of Sophie Kinsella books and was interested in Finding Audrey, her first YA title.Audrey, the narrator, is fourteen and a few months ago she was the victim of some brutal bullying by classmates. We're not told this explicitly. Audrey's reluctant to talk about the specifics but we know she was fairly traumatized and has been out of school for a while, and is seeing a psychologist for her anxiety disorder. Audrey cannot make eye contact with people and so she wears sunglasses everywhere, all the time. She has trouble talking to strangers or going out of the house. But she likes her therapist and is making a little progress. Then her brother brings over a gaming friend, and Audrey begins to perk up a bit, especially when Linus turns out to be friendly and compassionate.Of course this episode has impacted the entire family -- crazy Mum, stymied Dad, older brother Frank and little Felix. Well, maybe not four-year old Felix. He is pretty oblivious and offers some comic relief. The narration captures a teen's outlook without being too annoying or angsty. Mum is a bit over the top -- shrill and unreasonable, and I would have liked to see a little more growth on her part. She's fairly cartoonish. But the story is about Audrey, and she does change and grow as the story progresses.I found this to be a fun, easy read, and I believe teen girls would like it, and possibly even teen boys, since there is a story thread about poor Frank frequently battling his Mum so he can play video games. This might be especially good for teens who feel excluded, lonely or anxious -- so, most teens :-)Note: This book takes place in England so there are a few unfamiliar phrases, the most relevant being that "excluded" means expelled from school.
9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Finding Audrey In Ourselves By G.I Gurdjieff This book may be classified as YA, but really can be read and enjoyed by a lot of people. Audrey is a 14 year old girl who is dealing with typical kid issues while also battling anxiety disorder and depression,After an incident at school involving bullying, she becomes close to her brother's best friend Linus who tries to help Audrey while not always completely understanding her predicament.There are a lot of storylines in this book which tie into the main themes of AD and depression. As someone who has had minor issues with both, I found myself commiserating more because I have some understanding of how difficult this can be and how it affects everyday life. Audrey's issues were severe and I found myself feeling for her because she was a great character with a lot of heart and feeling.vI thought the book's author handled the subjects with understanding while also not managing to overwhelm the story with too much information for her target audience to process. Her supporting cast of character were interesting and included a gaming addicted brother Frank, a younger brother that was sweet and cute named Felix, and Audrey's funny and somewhat weird parents who were well intentioned but at times begged the question of who were the adults------the parents or the child. Her mother was a little nutty and her father was often oblivious to the things happening around him, but as the story evolved there was a strong sense that this family grew and evolved.The simple and innocent romance and friendship between Audrey and Linus was sweet and very relatable for anyone who managed to keep it simple during their early teen years. I liked the tender and sweet aspects of it.While every issue or storyline was not resolved by the end of this novel, this was a satisfying tale that was realistic and did not overwork its main topics, had nicely developed characters, and dealt with real problems with both empathy and humor.
